Critics generally regard Planet Zoo as a visually rich zoo builder with extensive creative freedom and a detailed animal simulation. The same systems that make it absorbing—animal welfare, habitat design, staff, and visitor needs—can also make it demanding or stressful. PC reviews from 2019 and console reviews from 2024 are separate review pools, so their scores should not be combined.
What do critics think of Planet Zoo?
The central critical divide is not whether Planet Zoo has substantial systems, but whether those systems feel rewarding or burdensome. Reviewers praise its scope for creating distinctive zoos and the detail of its animals. They are less unanimous about how coherently the management layer works: some find it deep and engaging, while others describe parts of it as thin, inconsistent, or difficult to navigate.
The game’s appeal and its friction come from the same design choice. Building a zoo is more than arranging scenery; animals have needs and operational pressures can demand attention. For players who enjoy balancing creative projects with ongoing management, that can add stakes. For others, the number of moving parts can become overwhelming.
How do the PC and console reviews differ?
The available critic records cover different editions and review periods. Metacritic’s PC page shows 55 critic reviews, while its Xbox Series X page shows five. These are not interchangeable samples, and a review score from one should not be treated as a score for the other.
#1 Best Overall
- Build a world for wildlife in Planet Zoo. From the developers of Planet Coaster and Zoo Tycoon comes the ultimate zoo sim.
- Construct detailed habitats, manage your zoo, and meet authentic living animals who think, feel and explore the world you create around them.
| Edition and review record | What the evidence shows | Important context |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Metacritic lists 55 critic reviews. PC Gamer’s Christopher Livingston rated the game 75. | PC Gamer published its review on November 5, 2019. Metacritic’s aggregate page is a changing snapshot. Metacritic PC reviews · PC Gamer review |
| Xbox Series X | Metacritic reports 83 from five critic reviews shown. | This is a separate console review pool; some listed critics note control, camera, or object-manipulation friction. Metacritic Xbox Series X reviews |
The contrast in these records should not be read as proof that one platform is objectively better received: the sample sizes, dates, and review pools differ. The console coverage also does not establish that controls or features are identical to the PC edition.
What do reviewers praise?
Creative building and customization
Critics often highlight the freedom to shape habitats, scenery, and the broader zoo. Metacritic’s listed excerpts emphasize customization, options, and creative expression. This builder side is a major reason the game stands out for players who want to make a zoo feel personal rather than simply complete a fixed sequence of objectives.

Animal detail and a consequential simulation
Reviewers also point to the animals and the care simulation as important strengths. PC Gamer recognizes the emotional stakes of looking after animals, while excerpts on Metacritic describe depth and challenge. For fans of management games, the appeal is that design decisions and day-to-day care are connected rather than wholly separate activities.
What do critics criticize?
Animal-care pressure
PC Gamer describes animals that can become ill, stressed, injured, overheated, or isolated, and argues that poor decisions can put their welfare at risk. That creates meaningful pressure, but can also make routine management feel stressful. This is a critic’s description of the simulation, not a guarantee that every player will experience it the same way.

Complexity and uneven management systems
Some listed critics see the volume of systems and options as a barrier for less committed players. Other criticism questions whether the management layer is consistently satisfying, even while acknowledging the builder’s strengths. The practical trade-off is that players seeking a relaxed decoration tool may find more demands than they want, while players seeking a substantial management sim may value the added complexity.
Interface and platform handling
Critics have mentioned construction or interface friction in PC coverage. The Xbox Series X review pool separately includes concerns about controls, camera handling, and manipulating objects. Those observations are specific to the reviews and platforms involved; they do not establish identical control problems across editions.

Which game mode fits your play style?
PC Gamer lists four official modes. Their names indicate different broad emphases, though individual players may prefer them for different reasons.
| Mode | Broad emphasis |
|---|---|
| Career | Structured goals and scenarios |
| Challenge | Management with constraints |
| Sandbox | Freeform building |
| Franchise | Ongoing zoo operation |
The mode list and descriptions come from PC Gamer’s review. They are a useful way to think about the game’s range, not a promise that a given mode removes every management demand.

What should buyers know about editions and sales?
Steam lists the base game alongside downloadable content and editions. Its live listing can change, so current prices, promotions, and bundle contents should be checked directly on the Planet Zoo Steam page. The available evidence establishes digital storefront listings; it does not establish physical retail availability. Likewise, the Xbox Series X critic page confirms console review coverage but does not establish full feature parity with PC.
Frontier Developments reported more than 3.4 million base-game units sold to date in its 2023 FY23 interim-results presentation, and said the game continued contributing annual revenue through base-game and paid DLC sales. That is a historical company-reported figure, not a current sales total. Frontier financial reports and presentations
What did PC Gamer’s reviewer conclude?
Christopher Livingston’s PC Gamer review, published November 5, 2019, characterized it as “Another strong (yet stressful) management sim from Frontier Developments.” The line captures the key critical tension: a deep, expressive builder whose simulation can demand considerable attention.
