You can play games in Discord in two fundamentally different ways: launch an embedded Activity inside Discord, or run a game on your computer or console and broadcast it with Go Live or Screen Share. Embedded Activities are the closest match to a built-in Discord channel game; streaming is better when everyone already owns an external game.
For an Activity, enter a voice channel or start a direct-message or group call, open the App Launcher, choose an app that offers an Activity, authorize it if Discord asks, and invite friends to select Join Activity. Text-channel use is also supported for some apps, but the available controls and participation method depend on that app and the channel’s permissions.

What “Discord channel games” means
Discord uses the term Activities for interactive experiences that open inside Discord. They include games, quizzes, and collaborative tools such as whiteboards. Discord Support describes them as “interactive experiences—such as games, quizzes, or collaborative tools like whiteboards—that open in a window within Discord and can be used in real-time with friends in text chats or voice calls.”
An Activity is not the same as streaming a normal PC or console game. With an Activity, Discord launches the supported experience in its own interface. With an external game, the game remains installed and running on your computer or console while Discord transmits your video or screen to people in a voice chat.

- Embedded Activity: friends join the same Discord experience and interact with it directly.
- Go Live or Screen Share: one person runs an external game and others watch the broadcast while talking in Discord.
The Activity catalog, supported regions, participant limits, and exact controls can change by app and by Discord’s current settings. Do not assume that an Activity visible to one server or account will be available everywhere.
What you need before starting
Use the Discord desktop app or Discord in a browser for the clearest access to the current App Launcher and streaming controls. Sign in to the server, direct message, or group call where you want to play.
For an embedded Activity
- Access to the target server voice channel, direct-message call, or group call.
- An app that currently offers an Activity in your region and account.
- Permission to use Activities in that server, channel, category, or role.
- Authorization for the app if Discord presents an authorization screen.
For an external game broadcast
- A game running on the computer or console you will share.
- A Discord voice channel or call in which you can start Go Live or Screen Share.
- Permission to share video or a screen in that voice context.
- A stable enough connection for the selected video quality.
Friends do not need to be in the same physical location. They do need to join the relevant Discord voice channel for a voice-based Activity or stream. For text-channel Activities, they use the app controls available in that channel.

- Open Discord and enter the destination. Choose the server and voice channel where your group will play, or begin a direct-message or group call.
- Open the App Launcher. In the voice channel or call controls, select App Launcher. The label and icon can vary slightly with Discord’s interface version.
- Choose an Activity. Browse or search for an app that offers an Activity. Select it to open its launch panel.
- Authorize when prompted. Discord may ask you to approve the app before it opens. Read the requested access and complete the authorization flow if you want to continue.
- Launch the Activity. Confirm the start command shown by Discord. The Activity opens in a window within Discord rather than launching as a separately installed game.
- Tell friends where to join. Ask everyone to enter the same voice channel or call. They should open the Activity invitation or activity panel and select Join Activity.
The person who starts the Activity does not automatically make every participant join. Each friend normally joins from the shared Discord session, and some apps may present their own join or authorization prompt.

Keep the voice channel usable while playing
Everyone can continue talking in the voice channel while the Activity runs. If people cannot hear one another, check that they are connected to the same voice channel, are not muted or deafened, and have the correct input and output devices selected in Discord. These audio settings are separate from the Activity itself.
How to use an Activity from a text channel
Discord documents Activities and apps in text-channel contexts as well as voice contexts, but text support is app-dependent. Some apps expose an Apps or App Launcher control beside the message composer; others may provide an app command, message action, or invitation card instead.
- Open the target text channel. Use the channel where your group is allowed to run the app.
- Open the available Apps or App Launcher control. Look beside the message composer or in the channel’s app controls.
- Select the app and its Activity. Search the available apps, then choose the Activity option if one is offered.
- Complete authorization. Approve the app if Discord requests authorization.
- Share or post the Activity invitation. Follow the app’s prompt so other members can open it from the text channel.
- Have participants use the app’s join control. Depending on the app, they may join from an invitation card, an in-channel panel, or a button provided by the app.
A text channel does not guarantee a full replacement for a voice session. An app may let people launch or coordinate an Activity from text while still requiring a call for live conversation, or it may implement participation entirely through messages. If no Activity control appears, the app may not support text-channel launch, the channel may block the app, or the server may have disabled the necessary permission.
How to play an external PC or console game with Go Live
Go Live and Screen Share do not embed the game in Discord. They broadcast a selected game application or screen to viewers in a voice chat. This is the appropriate method when the game is not available as a Discord Activity.

- Start the game first. Open the PC or console game and reach the screen you want friends to see.
- Join a voice channel or call. Enter the Discord voice context where your group is talking.
- Open the sharing control. Select Go Live or Screen Share from the voice controls.
- Select the source. Choose the detected game application for a game-only broadcast, or choose a screen or window when you need to show more than the game.
- Confirm the stream. Review the selected source and start the broadcast.
- Have friends watch. Friends in the voice channel can open your live stream and watch while remaining in voice chat.
Discord Support states that “Up to 50 people can share their video or screen at a time in a Discord voice chat.” That is a sharing limit for the voice chat, not a promise that every game supports 50 simultaneous players. In an external-game stream, Discord viewers are watching and talking unless the game itself provides a separate multiplayer connection.
Choose game capture or screen capture
- Game application: focuses the broadcast on the detected game and avoids showing unrelated windows when detection works correctly.
- Window or screen: is useful when the game is not detected, runs in a mode Discord cannot capture, or requires several windows. It can also reveal notifications and other private content, so close or hide anything you do not want to broadcast.
Embedded Activities versus external-game streaming
| Question | Embedded Activity | Go Live or Screen Share |

| Where does the game run? | Inside an Activity window within Discord. | On the host’s computer or console; Discord broadcasts the selected video or screen. |
| How do friends participate? | They enter the same voice channel or call, then select Join Activity; text-channel participation may use an app invitation or control. | They enter the voice channel and watch the host’s live stream while talking. |
| Does everyone need the game installed? | The Activity is provided through the app, although Discord or the app may request authorization. | The host must run the external game; viewers watch the broadcast and do not receive a playable copy through Discord. |
| Primary context | Voice channels and calls, with text-channel support varying by app. | Voice channels and calls. |
| Participant limit | Set by the specific Activity and current Discord settings. | Up to 50 people can share video or a screen at one time in a Discord voice chat, according to Discord Support. |

| Availability | Catalog and regional access vary by app and current Discord settings. | Available when Discord can capture the selected game, window, or screen and the account can stream. |
Permissions that control Activities and apps
Missing controls are usually a permissions issue rather than a broken game. Discord’s documentation identifies two administrative checkpoints.
Server installation
Installing an app for a server requires the server owner or a member with Manage Server permission. If you cannot add the app, ask an administrator to install it or to confirm whether the server allows that app.
Use Activities
The Use Activities permission can be controlled by role, channel, or category. An administrator can allow it for a role, disable it in a particular channel, or set a category-level rule that affects channels beneath it. A member may therefore see Activities in one voice channel but not another.

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)

App-specific access
Apps may have additional permissions or authorization screens. Approving an app in one context does not mean every server or channel has granted it access. If an app opens but friends cannot interact, check the app’s own invitation and participation controls as well as Discord permissions.
Troubleshooting when the game will not start
The App Launcher or Activity button is missing
- Confirm that you are in a voice channel, direct-message call, group call, or a text channel where app controls are supported.
- Ask an administrator to check Use Activities for your role, the channel, and its category.
- Verify that the server has installed or allowed the relevant app when server installation is required.
- Try the desktop app or browser if the current client view does not expose the control.
The Activity appears, but it will not open
- Complete the authorization prompt instead of closing it.
- Check whether the Activity is available in your region and account.
- Close another Activity or call session if Discord is already running one for you.
- Ask the server owner whether app permissions changed after the Activity was configured.
Friends cannot join
- Make sure everyone is in the same voice channel or call.
- Have friends open the Activity panel and choose Join Activity rather than only watching the host’s screen.
- For text-channel use, repost or reopen the app invitation and use the app’s own join control.
- Check whether a participant is blocked by a role, channel, category, or app authorization requirement.
Go Live cannot find the game
- Start the game before opening Go Live or Screen Share.
- Use a window or full-screen source if Discord does not detect the game application.
- Check that you have permission to share video or a screen in that voice channel.
- Stop an existing stream before starting another source if the voice session is already at its sharing capacity.
The stream is blank or shows the wrong window
Stop the broadcast, reopen Screen Share, and select the intended game application or window. If you selected an entire screen, remove private windows and notifications before restarting. A game may also need to run in a display mode that Discord can capture; when application capture fails, window or screen sharing is the practical fallback.
Availability, limits, and expectations
There is no permanent, universal list of Discord games. Apps can be added, removed, restricted by region, or presented differently as Discord changes its settings. Treat the Activity search results in your own account as the current availability signal.

Likewise, an Activity’s player count is set by that Activity and its current Discord integration. The documented 50-person figure applies to simultaneous video or screen sharing in a voice chat, not to the number of people who can play every embedded game. A small Activity may support fewer participants, while a large voice channel may contain viewers who are not playing.
Text-channel support is also not uniform. Discord provides app and Activity entry points in text contexts, but each app determines whether participants can play directly through messages, open a shared Activity window, or use text only to coordinate a voice session.
Quick Recap
A simple choice guide
- Choose an embedded Activity when you want a lightweight game, quiz, or collaborative experience that opens inside Discord and does not require everyone to install the same external title.
- Choose Go Live when one person owns and runs a PC or console game and the group mainly wants to watch, discuss, or learn from that session.
- Use Screen Share when the game is not detected, when you need to show multiple windows, or when the audience needs to see the whole desktop.
- Use a text-channel app flow when the app exposes one and your group prefers messages for invitations and coordination; verify the app’s participation model before expecting a full game session.
