Grepolis is free to play, and you can access it in a browser or through its mobile app where available. It combines city-building, resource management, research, land and sea warfare, mythical units, and alliances in an ancient Greek setting. This is an overview of the available experience and official beginner guidance, not a first-hand playtest.
How to play Grepolis online for free
InnoGames confirms that Grepolis is free to play. Its official description presents it as a browser-based strategy game, and official app listings provide mobile options. Choose the route that suits your device and check local store availability, which can vary by region and over time.
- Play in a browser through the official Grepolis site.
- Check the Google Play listing or Apple App Store listing for mobile availability in your region. The listings also describe continuing in a PC browser.
The official sources do not establish detailed feature parity between browser and mobile, so choose based on device preference, screen size, and input style rather than assuming one version is better.
What you do in Grepolis
Build and develop a Greek city
You begin with a small polis and develop it by collecting resources, constructing buildings, and researching technologies through the Academy. City growth supports later economic and military choices; the official guidance does not prescribe a single optimal build order, so make choices in light of your current goals and situation.

Manage resources, research, and armies
Resources and research underpin development, while recruited units give you options for military action. The game includes ordinary and mythical units, and its strategy spans land and sea. Treat expansion and military investment as connected decisions: the resources you devote to one area affect what you can develop elsewhere.
Use the map to plan expansion
The map is central to the interface. InnoGames’ interface guide describes a world map organized as 100 oceans in a grid, alongside panels and tools for city resources, unit status, reports, alliance forums, rankings, and notifications. Check the map for nearby islands and activity, then use reports and city panels to keep track of what is happening at home and around you.

- IT'S NOT IN THE ADVENTURE, IT'S IN THE RETELLING OF THE TALE – Venture out on quests, then return to the tavern to spin your deeds into legend. Victory goes to the adventurer whose stories are worth the most.
Work with an alliance
Cooperation is a major part of Grepolis’s design. Alliances provide ways to communicate and coordinate attacks or shared defense across land, sea, and air. Alliance play is a prominent option, not a promise that every player must prefer the same style of play.
Choose a god carefully
Grepolis has eight gods: Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, Hera, Hades, Artemis, Aphrodite, and Ares. Each god has four divine powers and two unique mythical units, and each city worships one god at a time. The powers and units can make a god choice relevant to a city’s current needs, but the official overview of these systems does not establish a universal ranking.

- GRUNTZ Base Game - Allplay - 2 to 2 players - 20 Minutes Play Time
Before choosing, read the current in-game descriptions and consider whether your city needs support for resources, offense, or defense. Switching gods removes that city’s favor and the former god’s divine powers and mythical units, so do not change casually.
Beginner tips grounded in the official guidance
- Check the map and city panels regularly. Look at nearby islands and activity, and keep an eye on resources and unit status in the city interface.
- Use reports to follow events. Reports and notifications help you monitor developments; consult them alongside the map rather than treating the city screen as the whole picture.
- Make city choices with a goal in mind. Buildings, research, and military recruitment all draw on development resources. There is no official, world-independent build order in the cited guidance.
- Read god descriptions before committing. Compare the powers and mythical units with what your city needs, and account for the loss of favor and god-linked effects if you later switch.
- Explore alliance tools if coordinated play appeals to you. The interface includes alliance forums, and InnoGames emphasizes cooperation; whether to take part depends on your preferred play style.
- Follow the rules for the world you join. The official US rules page says a player may have one account per game world. Check the applicable regional and world rules rather than assuming every configuration is identical.
What this overview can—and cannot—say
Grepolis is a free-to-play browser and mobile strategy game, but current app availability depends on the local store listing. The official pages describe its core systems and interface; they do not establish a current active-player count, a detailed browser-versus-mobile feature comparison, or a single best strategy for every world. Likewise, god abilities should be evaluated using their current in-game descriptions rather than an unsupported universal tier list.
