Yes, you can play Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon on a Windows, macOS, or Linux PC with Azahar, the open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator that followed the merger of the PabloMK7 Citra fork and Lime3DS. The safest current route is to download Azahar from its official release page, use game and system files dumped from hardware you own, and treat compatibility as build- and configuration-dependent rather than assuming old Citra ratings still apply.
This guide covers the current PC requirements, installation choices, legitimate file preparation, graphics settings, performance expectations, and the most common documented failures.

What you need
- A supported 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or newer, macOS 13.4 Ventura or newer, or a modern 64-bit Linux distribution.
- An x86-64 or ARM64 processor. x86-64 systems need SSE4.2; Windows on ARM is not supported.
- Single-core CPU performance above 1,800 PassMark.
- A GPU supporting OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan 1.1.
- At least 2 GB of RAM; 4 GB is recommended.
- Your own legally obtained Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon game data and, where required, files dumped from your own Nintendo 3DS.
These are Azahar’s published minimum specifications, not a guarantee that every game will run perfectly. CPU single-core performance, graphics drivers, thermal throttling, and the specific Azahar build can all affect results. See the official Azahar repository for the current requirements and releases.
Use Azahar, not an old Citra download
Many older guides still recommend Citra. That advice is stale for a current installation: Azahar is the actively developed successor project formed by merging the PabloMK7 Citra fork and Lime3DS after Citra was taken down. The latest official release identified for this guide is Azahar 2125.1.2, released May 14, 2026.

Download Azahar only from the project’s official Releases page. Avoid websites presenting themselves as the current official Citra source; the preserved Citra site is explicitly an archive dated March 4, 2024.
Install Azahar on Windows
- Open Azahar’s official Releases page.
- Download either the Windows installer or the ZIP archive.
- Install the application, or extract the ZIP to a folder you control and launch the included executable.
- Start Azahar and complete its first-run configuration.
Azahar provides MSVC and MSYS2 Windows builds. The repository README says users who are unsure should use MSYS2, but the Azahar 2125.0 release announcement specifically directed Windows users to use MSVC because that release’s MSYS2 build had a compiler-related stability problem. Check the notes for the release you actually download instead of treating either option as universally best.
If Windows reports MSVCP140_ATOMIC_WAIT.dll not found, install the required Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for the MSVC build, then restart Azahar. Do not download an individual DLL from an unofficial DLL site.
Install Azahar on Linux
The project recommends the Flatpak package. If you use an AppImage, Azahar lists two files:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →azahar.AppImage— recommended for most users.azahar-wayland.AppImage— use when native Wayland support is specifically required.
Follow the current package instructions on the official repository. The available research does not establish a current universal command-line installation command, so avoid copying old Citra commands into a modern Azahar setup.
Install Azahar on macOS
Choose the package matching your Mac from the release assets: macos-universal, macos-arm64, or macos-x86_64. Launch the .app bundle, not the raw azahar executable. Azahar added a warning for users who start the raw executable directly.
Prepare Pokémon Sun or Moon safely
Azahar is an emulator; it does not supply Pokémon Sun, Pokémon Moon, ROM images, encryption keys, or Nintendo 3DS system files. The official documentation describes obtaining required files by dumping them from your own console. It does not publish an official procedure for downloading a Pokémon ROM or keys from the internet.
Do not treat “I own the cartridge” as a universal answer to every legal question. Rules covering emulator use, copying game data, system-file dumping, encryption keys, and circumvention vary by jurisdiction, and the available official sources do not provide jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal advice. Use your own game and console data, consult the law where you live, and do not download copyrighted ROMs or keys from unofficial sources.
Some games require additional files dumped from a 3DS, including System Archives and Config Savegame. That does not prove that every Pokémon Sun or Moon setup requires them. Follow Azahar’s current prompts and consult its official FAQ and live compatibility resources for your exact build.
Add your game and start it
Place your legitimately dumped game data somewhere you can access reliably, then use Azahar’s current game-browsing or file-opening controls to select it. Azahar’s official FAQ does not document a guaranteed current desktop “add game directory” menu path, so labels may differ between releases and operating systems. Do not rely on an old Citra menu path as if it were confirmed for Azahar.
If Sun or Moon does not appear, check that:
- you selected a supported dump rather than a shortcut or incomplete file;
- the file is stored somewhere your user account can read;
- Azahar is updated to a current release;
- any required system files were dumped from your own 3DS and installed through the emulator’s supported workflow; and
- your security software has not quarantined part of the emulator or blocked access to the game directory.
What compatibility should you expect?
There is no current official, title-specific result in the supplied sources that proves a fixed compatibility rating for Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon. Azahar’s FAQ directs users to the project’s compatibility tracker and warns that reports may be outdated. That means claims such as “both games are perfect” or “both games always require system archives” are too broad without specifying the Azahar version, operating system, renderer, dump, and configuration.
Use the Azahar FAQ and compatibility tracker when diagnosing a particular problem. The archived Citra compatibility page dated March 4, 2024 can provide historical context, but it is not Azahar’s current compatibility database.

Recommended performance settings
Begin with defaults. Change one setting at a time and keep notes about whether the change improves the actual problem.
Choose a renderer based on your machine
Azahar supports OpenGL 4.3 and Vulkan 1.1-class hardware. Vulkan can benefit systems with suitable drivers, but the release notes document ongoing renderer fixes and do not establish one renderer as a guaranteed solution for every PC or Pokémon-specific problem. If one renderer crashes or displays corruption, update your GPU driver, try the other supported renderer, and compare behavior rather than applying a universal “always use Vulkan” rule.
Keep the Vulkan shader cache enabled
Azahar 2125.0 added a Vulkan disk shader cache using .vkch files. It stores compiled shaders so they do not need to be compiled again on later launches. The release notes say this removes shader-compilation stutter after the application’s initial compilation run. The first playthrough or first visit to new effects can still be less smooth while shaders are compiled.
Use the newer display options when appropriate
- Integer Scaling: useful when you want the game image scaled in whole-number steps rather than softened by fractional scaling.
- Layouts to Cycle: controls which screen layouts are included when using the Cycle Layout or Toggle Layout hotkey.
- Vulkan texture filtering: texture filtering was re-added in Azahar 2125.0 after being removed in 2124.2 because of stability problems. Its availability should therefore be judged by the version you are running, not by old guides.
Leave refresh-rate detection enabled
Azahar 2125.0 added Enable display refresh rate detection as a desktop debug setting. It is enabled by default. The release notes warn that disabling it can cause slowdowns on certain displays, so leave it enabled unless you have a specific reason to test otherwise.
Do not chase maximum resolution first
Pokémon Sun and Moon use two 3DS screens with different gameplay roles. A layout that looks attractive on a large monitor may make one screen too small or require excessive scaling. First establish stable gameplay at the default resolution and layout, then increase internal resolution or experiment with filtering if your GPU has headroom.
Controls and screen layout
Map a comfortable controller or keyboard layout for movement, menus, shoulder buttons, and the touchscreen. Because important actions use the lower touchscreen, make sure your chosen layout provides an obvious way to click or tap that screen. Use Azahar’s layout controls to prioritize the main screen, enlarge the touchscreen, or cycle between saved layouts as needed.

Azahar crashes repeatedly
Start with the official FAQ’s first check: confirm that your PC meets Azahar’s minimum specifications. Then update Azahar and your graphics driver, test the other supported renderer, and temporarily return graphics settings to defaults. If the crash began after a configuration change, reset settings using the current build’s documented controls.
Azahar 2125.0 fixed a known crash that could occur while resetting settings to defaults. If you are using an older build and settings reset itself crashes, update before treating the behavior as a current emulator limitation.
Vulkan crashes or behaves incorrectly
The release notes document Vulkan validation fixes and continuing renderer changes, but they do not provide a universal Vulkan crash workaround. Update Azahar and the GPU driver, test OpenGL if your hardware supports it, and record the exact build, operating system, GPU, driver, and trigger before consulting the project’s support and compatibility resources.
The game is slow on a laptop with two GPUs
Use the operating system or GPU control panel to verify which GPU Azahar is using. Azahar 2125.0 changed AMD-driver behavior so the dedicated GPU is selected by default when an integrated GPU is also present, but you should still verify the result on your system and keep drivers current.
The game stutters
Do not assume shader stutter must continue forever. On Vulkan, let the initial shader compilation occur and keep the disk shader cache enabled. If stutter persists across later launches, check whether the cache is being written, whether the emulator’s data directory is writable, whether the game is being moved between locations, and whether background software is interrupting performance.

macOS shows a launch warning
Launch Azahar through its .app bundle rather than the raw executable. The warning was added specifically to distinguish the supported application-bundle launch from direct executable launching.
Old instructions mention an SDL2 frontend
Azahar 2125.0 removed the old SDL2 frontend. SDL2 functionality remains inside the Qt frontend, so an old guide telling you to select a separate SDL2 frontend may not match the current application.
Mods and advanced features
Archived Citra documentation describes a right-click Dump RomFS action and a mod directory pattern of load/mods/<Title ID>. It also names an Enable 3GX plugin loader system setting for 3GX plugin modding. These are archived Citra instructions, not guaranteed current Azahar menu paths, and the plugin setting is not needed for ordinary Pokémon Sun or Moon gameplay.
If you use mods, confirm the current Azahar documentation for your exact release and keep an unmodified backup of your save and game data. A mod that worked with an older Citra-derived build may fail after an emulator, game, or operating-system update.
Bottom line
Azahar is the correct current starting point for playing Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon on a PC. Download it from the official project, use your own legally obtained game and console-dumped files, start with default settings, and consult the live compatibility tracker instead of relying on archived Citra ratings. Most troubleshooting should begin with requirements, current versions, graphics drivers, renderer comparison, and a clean configuration—not with random commands or ROM-download sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Citra still the emulator I should download for Pokémon Sun and Moon?
No. For a current PC installation, use Azahar, the successor project formed from the PabloMK7 Citra fork and Lime3DS. The preserved Citra site is an archive, not the current project source.
Do Pokémon Sun and Moon definitely need 3DS system archives?
Not necessarily. Official compatibility documentation says some games require System Archives or Config Savegame files, but the available sources do not establish that every Sun or Moon setup requires them. Check Azahar’s current prompts and compatibility resources for your build.
Can I use an old Citra setup guide with Azahar?
Only cautiously. Some concepts carry over, but menu labels, frontend components, renderer behavior, and compatibility can change. Archived Citra paths should not be treated as confirmed current Azahar instructions.
