The best Delta games depend on how you want to play. Start with Super Mario World or The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for an excellent all-round experience. Choose Chrono Trigger, Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon Emerald, or Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney if you will mostly use touchscreen controls. For a physical controller, Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64 are stronger choices.

Delta is an emulator and library manager, not a store of games. It supports game files for NES, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis. The recommendations below are editorial picks based on each game’s lasting reputation, its fit for Delta’s supported systems, and how comfortable its controls are on an iPhone or iPad. They are not claims that every title has been tested in every current Delta build.

Quick picks: the best Delta games by system

NES Super Mario Bros. 3 The Legend of Zelda, Kirby’s Adventure, Mega Man 2 Touch is usable; controller helps with harder action games

Best NES games for Delta

Super Mario Bros. 3

The safest NES recommendation is still Super Mario Bros. 3. Its individual stages suit short phone sessions, while its world map and secrets reward longer play. It is also a good first test of Delta’s virtual directional pad and buttons: the controls are straightforward, although players attempting precise jumps may prefer a physical controller.

The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda is a foundational action-adventure game built around exploration, item collection, dungeon progression, and experimentation. Its deliberate pace makes it more manageable on a touchscreen than a fast action game, though the lack of explicit direction can be demanding for new players.

Kirby’s Adventure

Choose Kirby’s Adventure for a more forgiving platformer. Kirby’s copy abilities provide variety, and the game is approachable when you want classic platforming without the sharper difficulty curve of some NES action titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mega Man 2

Mega Man 2 is an excellent choice for players who want demanding action-platforming, selectable stages, and boss-weapon strategy. Repeated directional inputs and precision jumps expose the limitations of virtual controls, so this is one of the NES games that benefits noticeably from a controller.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is the pick for a harder, route-based action game. Its branching paths give repeat playthroughs a different shape, but its difficulty and frequent precision movement make it less suitable as a first touchscreen game.

Best Super Nintendo games

Super Mario World

Super Mario World is the best all-round SNES starting point: polished movement, readable level design, optional secrets, and a structure that works for both five-minute sessions and a complete playthrough. It is playable with touch controls, but a controller makes demanding later levels more comfortable.

Super Metroid

Super Metroid is the strongest recommendation for exploration. Its map-based progression, atmosphere, upgrades, and interconnected world make it an ideal long-form Delta game. The action is fast enough that an external controller is preferable, especially for players who dislike repeated virtual-button inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past remains one of the best touchscreen candidates among action-adventure games. Movement and combat are deliberate, the interface is clear, and the item-based progression gives the game a satisfying rhythm on an iPhone or iPad.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is a standout turn-based RPG for Delta. Its menu-heavy structure, curated story, and manageable encounter flow suit touch controls particularly well. It is a strong choice when you want a substantial classic RPG without starting with the longest possible commitment.

GameSir X5 Lite Mobile Gaming Controller for Android,Hall Effect Joystick
  • WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
  • MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
  • HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.

EarthBound

EarthBound is the slower, stranger alternative. Its humor, writing, modern-day setting, and unusual enemy and item design make it a good recommendation for players who value personality over conventional fantasy presentation. Its turn-based battles and menus are comfortable on a touchscreen.

Best Game Boy and Game Boy Color games

Tetris

Tetris is Delta’s ideal short-session game. It requires little setup, works in brief bursts, and is easy to understand even if you have never played the original Game Boy version. Touch controls are sufficient for casual play; a controller can help with high-score attempts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX delivers a complete adventure in a compact handheld format. Its top-down movement, item management, and deliberate combat translate well to a small screen and make it a particularly good first Game Boy adventure.

Pokémon Crystal

Pokémon Crystal is a strong long-form RPG recommendation. Turn-based battles, menu navigation, exploration, and party management all work naturally with touch controls. It is better suited to sustained play than a quick pick-up-and-play session, particularly if you want to complete a full journey.

Wario Land 3

Wario Land 3 combines platforming with puzzles and exploration. Its less twitch-focused design makes it more comfortable on virtual buttons than many fast action games, while its progression gives you a reason to revisit areas.

Kirby’s Dream Land 2

Kirby’s Dream Land 2 is a compact, approachable platformer. It suits readers who want something lighter than a long RPG and more forgiving than a precision-focused action game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Game Boy Advance games

Pokémon Emerald

Pokémon Emerald is the best GBA recommendation for many Delta users. It offers a substantial turn-based RPG campaign, clear menu navigation, and a natural fit for save states. Use ordinary in-game saves as well as save states so that progress is not tied to one temporary emulator state.

Metroid Fusion

Metroid Fusion is a focused action-platformer with exploration, upgrades, and a more directed structure than Super Metroid. It is enjoyable on a larger iPad screen, but the repeated movement and action inputs make a physical controller the better choice for many players.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is an approachable handheld adventure with inventive size-changing mechanics and a strong fit for short or medium sessions. Its deliberate top-down combat and item use make it reasonably touch-friendly.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a humorous RPG with timing-based battle commands. It can be played with touch controls, but players who are sensitive to the precision of virtual buttons should use a controller.

  • 【TIPS FOR IPHONE GAME CONTROLLER】 When the wireless phone controller encounters abnormal situations such as inability to connect/charge, joystick offset, you can try resetting it: poke the 'RESET' hole on the back of controller with a needle, and then restart the controller for iphone to solve most non quality problems
  • 【TIPS FOR CLOUD GAMING CONTROLLER】 Please use this mobile game controller to play games on a high-speed and stable network. This is because cloud games have high network requirements and require a high-speed and low latency network environment to reduce latency caused by network congestion and enhance the gaming experience
  • 【PLAY ANY CONTROLLER SUPPORTED APP GAMES】 The iphone game controller is designed to enjoy unstoppable gaming experience, work for iPhone/Android, support nearly all cloud gaming services including Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, GeForce NOW, MFi Apple Arcade & hundreds of popular mobile games like Call of Duty, Roblox, etc. The phone controller perfects your mobile gaming experience beyond a console by making it happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone
  • 【WIRELESS IPHONE GAME CONTROLLER WITH HALL JOYSTICK】 Only hold on 'HOME', you can connect controller for iphone with phone via Bluetooth. The Hall effect joystick provide ultra precise control, No drift, No deadzone! It helps you gain dominant position of games faster and the performance and game experience has been improved qualitatively

Fire Emblem

Fire Emblem is especially well suited to deliberate play. Its grid-based tactical battles, menus, and turn-based decision-making remove the need for rapid inputs, making it one of the better GBA choices for touchscreen-only players.

Best Nintendo 64 games

N64 games need more caution than 2D handheld games because analog movement, camera control, shoulder buttons, and the original three-pronged controller layout do not map equally well to a touchscreen.

Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 is the essential 3D platformer recommendation. Its movement and camera are central to the experience, however, so an external controller is preferable. A touchscreen can work for experimentation or slower play, but it is not the ideal way to judge the game’s precise platforming.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time offers a broad adventure with exploration, puzzles, dungeons, and substantial progression. It is more forgiving than a pure racing or precision-platforming game, but camera and analog movement still make a controller worthwhile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64 is ideal for quick races and multiplayer-oriented sessions where the necessary setup supports them. Racing benefits from physical controls, especially when steering and drifting demand consistent analog input.

Star Fox 64

Star Fox 64 is a compact action game with replayable routes and a strong arcade-like rhythm. Its rapid movement and shooting make a controller the sensible choice.

Paper Mario

Paper Mario is the most touch-friendly N64 recommendation here. It is a turn-based RPG with a lighter pace, menus, exploration, and timed battle commands. A controller remains useful, but the game does not depend on constant analog precision in the way Super Mario 64 does.

Best Nintendo DS games

Delta’s Nintendo DS workflow may require additional BIOS files. Consult Delta’s official DS BIOS guide before assuming that a DS title will work identically to an NES, GBA, or SNES game. DS titles also differ greatly in how much they depend on the second screen, microphone, stylus, or touch input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pokémon Platinum

Pokémon Platinum is a strong long-form DS RPG recommendation. Its turn-based battles and menu navigation suit save states and touch input, while the DS layout gives the iPad’s larger display a practical advantage.

Mario Kart DS

Mario Kart DS is the obvious DS racing choice, but it is best approached with a physical controller if the mapping feels comfortable. Touchscreen steering and DS-specific input can vary in convenience depending on your setup.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for iPhone, Apple, Android & Xbox Cloud Gaming, Bluetooth Gamepad with Hall Effect Joysticks, 2 Pro Back Buttons, Officially Licensed (Black)
  • Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
  • Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
  • Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
  • Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is one of the easiest DS recommendations for touch controls. Its dialogue, evidence selection, investigation, and menu-heavy structure do not require the sustained precision of a platformer. It is particularly well suited to an iPad, where reading and examining details are more comfortable on a larger display.

The World Ends With You

The World Ends With You is a distinctive touch-centric action RPG. It is worth recommending precisely because its DS design is unusual, but control configuration matters: check how Delta presents and maps the two screens and touch input before committing to a long playthrough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kirby: Canvas Curse

Kirby: Canvas Curse is an intriguing iPad choice because its original design is strongly oriented around stylus interaction. The experience depends on Delta’s current DS input configuration, so treat it as a configuration-sensitive recommendation rather than a guaranteed plug-and-play experience.

Best Sega Genesis games

Delta is not Nintendo-only. Its current importing guide lists Genesis extensions, allowing a short but worthwhile Sega section.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2: the best starting point for fast 2D platforming and short sessions; a controller is preferable for precision movement.
  • Streets of Rage 2: an excellent side-scrolling beat-’em-up for quick co-op-style or solo sessions where supported by your setup.
  • Gunstar Heroes: a demanding run-and-gun game that benefits from physical buttons and a responsive directional pad.
  • Phantasy Star IV: a strong choice for a more traditional, turn-based RPG experience with menus that suit touch controls.
  • Shining Force II: a tactical RPG alternative for players who prefer deliberate battles to rapid action.

These are platform-fit and reputation-based recommendations, not claims of testing in the current Delta release.

Choose games by control style

If you want… Start with… Why
The best first game Super Mario World or A Link to the Past Clear goals, polished controls, and manageable session length
The best accessible RPG Pokémon Emerald Turn-based play, menus, and a substantial but approachable campaign
A shorter classic RPG Chrono Trigger Curated progression and excellent touch-control fit
The best DS RPG Pokémon Platinum Long-form progression with natural save-state and menu use
The best action game Super Metroid Exploration, atmosphere, and meaningful ability-based progression
The best 2D platformer Super Mario World Works for both short sessions and a complete playthrough
The best 3D platformer Super Mario 64 The defining N64 platforming choice, with a controller recommended
The best quick-session game Tetris or Mario Kart 64 Easy to start and naturally divided into short sessions
The best touch-control games Phoenix Wright, Chrono Trigger, Pokémon Crystal, or Paper Mario They rely more on menus, dialogue, turn-based decisions, or deliberate movement

Touchscreen or controller?

Touch controls are most defensible for turn-based RPGs, puzzle games, visual-novel-style adventures, menu-heavy strategy games, and slower exploration games. They are less comfortable for analog-heavy N64 titles, racing games, fast platformers, and action games requiring repeated directional and shoulder-button inputs.

Delta’s official controller documentation says iOS-compatible Bluetooth, connected, and MFi controllers can be used and remapped by system. Configure each system separately: an NES layout needs a small number of buttons, SNES adds shoulder buttons, GBA changes the face-button arrangement, N64 needs analog and multiple shoulder inputs, and DS games may need touch and two-screen interaction.

If you dislike virtual buttons, an iPhone game controller is the most useful hardware upgrade for Delta. Match the connector and device before buying:

  • iPhone: choose a Lightning or USB-C model that matches your phone, or use a compatible Bluetooth controller.
  • iPad: a standard Bluetooth or USB-C controller is usually more practical than assuming a phone-grip controller will physically fit. A full-size iPad may not fit in a controller designed to hold a phone.
  • Apple compatibility: model-specific requirements matter. 8BitDo’s Apple compatibility list documents supported models and connection requirements.
  • Wired mobile controllers: Backbone documents Lightning and USB-C variants and says wired mode can work with iPad, tablets, Mac, and PC; the correct version still depends on the device and connector. See its wired-connection guidance.

A sensible Delta setup

  1. Use touch controls first with Chrono Trigger, Pokémon Crystal, Fire Emblem, or Phoenix Wright.
  2. Add a controller before judging fast platformers, racing games, or N64 titles.
  3. On an iPad, consider a stable stand for DS games and long RPG sessions; do not assume a phone-grip controller is an iPad stand.
  4. Remap controls by system and check the DS screen and touch layout before starting a long game.

How to import games legally

Delta requires ROM or other game files; it does not provide a legal library of commercial games. Use only game files you are legally entitled to use. Laws concerning personal backups, cartridge dumping, and copyrighted game files vary by jurisdiction, so check local law. This guide does not link to ROM-download sites.

The presence of Delta in the App Store does not grant permission to download copyrighted games from unauthorized sources. Nintendo states that uploading and downloading pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal in its online-piracy guidance. The U.S. Copyright Office describes limited software archival-copy rules and says they do not authorize selling or distributing backup copies to third parties; see its digital-copyright FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Delta through the official distribution route available to you in your region.
  2. Obtain compatible files only from games and cartridges you are legally entitled to use, following the law where you live.
  3. Import one system and one game first instead of immediately building a huge library.
  4. For DS, obtain and configure the required BIOS files as described in Delta’s DS documentation.
  5. Make an in-game save as well as a Delta save state whenever possible.
  6. Back up the Delta library and save data before a major device migration or app update.

A cartridge reader or dumper can be relevant to people building a personal, legally managed library. Delta’s importing guide mentions a tool such as GB Operator as one way to obtain compatible files, but a reader or dumper does not make every copying activity automatically lawful. Do not treat hardware as permission to download or distribute games.

Save states, backups, and practical safeguards

Save states are useful for pausing difficult sections, preserving progress before a boss, and fitting long games around short sessions. They should supplement—not replace—the game’s own save system. In-game saves are generally easier to carry across compatible setups and provide a second recovery path if a state becomes unavailable or corrupted.

Before changing iPhones or iPads, reinstalling Delta, or applying a major update, back up the app’s library and save data using the available device-management or file-sharing workflow. Keep more than one meaningful save state for an important game rather than overwriting the only state repeatedly.

Troubleshooting and compatibility checks

A game does not appear after importing

Confirm that the file uses an extension supported by the current Delta importing guide, that the import completed, and that the file is not compressed in an unsupported archive. Try one known-good, legally obtained file from the same system before changing several settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Nintendo DS game will not start

Check Delta’s current DS BIOS requirements and file placement instructions first. DS compatibility is not identical to loading an NES or GBA game, and some titles depend on touch, microphone, screen arrangement, or other system-specific behavior. Consult the official BIOS instructions rather than assuming the game file itself is defective.

Controls feel wrong

Open the controller settings and remap the current system rather than relying on one universal layout. N64 games are the most likely to feel awkward because their analog and shoulder-button requirements differ substantially from NES and SNES games. For DS titles, verify both the virtual screens and the touch-input area.

The game is difficult to play on an iPhone

Try landscape orientation, a different Delta skin, larger virtual buttons, or a physical controller. Turn-based and menu-heavy games are usually the best touchscreen fallback. Do not use a poor touchscreen experience with one fast game as evidence that every Delta title will feel the same.

The game pauses when multitasking on iPad

The iPad App Store listing documents automatic pausing when changing windows, alongside Split View, Stage Manager, and Handoff support. That behavior is useful for preventing accidental inputs, but it means you should expect to resume the game after switching windows rather than assuming it will continue running uninterrupted.

Final shortlist

  • One game for almost anyone: Super Mario World.
  • Best adventure: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
  • Best exploration: Super Metroid.
  • Best touchscreen RPG: Chrono Trigger or Pokémon Emerald.
  • Best DS touchscreen game: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
  • Best handheld adventure: Link’s Awakening DX or The Minish Cap.
  • Best N64 game with a controller: Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time.
  • Best short session: Tetris.
  • Best Genesis starting point: Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Begin with one legally obtained game, configure the controls for its system, and add a controller only when the genre demands it. That approach makes Delta’s broad library easier to enjoy than importing everything at once and discovering later that the game, screen layout, or control scheme is not a good match for your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Super Mario World is the best all-round starting point. A Link to the Past is another excellent choice, while Chrono Trigger and Pokémon Emerald are better if you expect to use touchscreen controls.

What is the best game to play first in Delta?

No. Delta is an emulator and library manager. You must import compatible game files that you are legally entitled to use; Delta does not grant permission to download copyrighted games from unauthorized sites.

Does Delta include games?

Some DS games and setups may require additional BIOS files. Check Delta’s current official DS BIOS instructions before assuming that every DS title will import and start identically.

Do Nintendo DS games need BIOS files in Delta?

No, but it is strongly preferable for analog-heavy N64 games, racing games, fast platformers, and action titles. Turn-based RPGs, puzzle games, strategy games, and dialogue-heavy adventures are generally more comfortable with touch controls.

Is a controller necessary for Delta?

Not necessarily. A phone-grip controller may not physically hold a full-size iPad. For iPad, a standard Bluetooth or USB-C controller is usually the safer choice, subject to the controller’s documented compatibility.

Can an iPhone-grip controller be used with an iPad?

The Bottom Line

Best overall starting point: Super Mario World. Choose Chrono Trigger, Pokémon Emerald, or Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for touchscreen-first play, and use a properly matched Lightning, USB-C, or Bluetooth controller for N64, racing, and fast action games.
