Whisky can run some Windows games on Apple-silicon Macs, but it is now officially unmaintained. It is a Wine-based macOS wrapper that uses Apple Game Porting Toolkit components—not a full Windows installation—and success depends on the exact game, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat system and software versions. Existing users may still find it useful; people starting from scratch should check the target game and compare maintained alternatives such as CrossOver.
Whisky can run some Windows games on Apple-silicon Macs—but it is no longer maintained
Whisky (often misspelled “Whiskey” in searches) is a macOS application that combines Wine with components of Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit behind a relatively simple interface. It can make selected Windows games playable on an Apple-silicon Mac, but it is not a Windows installation, it does not support every game, and its official website now says that the project is no longer maintained.

That changes the recommendation considerably. Whisky may still be useful if you already have a working installation or want to experiment with a particular title. If you are starting from scratch, check the game first and compare Whisky with a maintained alternative—especially CrossOver—before investing time in setup.
What Whisky actually does
Whisky is a compatibility layer, not a virtual machine and not a dual-boot installation of Windows. It creates isolated Wine environments, commonly called bottles, in which Windows programs can be installed and launched.

Wine translates Windows application and system calls into operations that macOS can handle. Whisky adds Apple Game Porting Toolkit components and a native SwiftUI interface intended to simplify tasks such as creating a bottle, installing a Windows executable or launcher, and making a shortcut for a game.
On an Apple-silicon Mac, the graphics path can use Apple’s translation technologies, including Metal-related components supplied through the Game Porting Toolkit environment. This is why some DirectX-based Windows games can run without installing the full Windows operating system.
Compatibility layer versus Windows installation
| Approach | What it provides | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Whisky or another Wine-based wrapper | Runs selected Windows applications through translation layers inside macOS | Compatibility varies substantially by game, launcher, DRM and anti-cheat system |
| Virtual machine | Runs a Windows environment inside macOS | Requires more system resources and may have its own graphics, licensing and performance limitations |
| Dual boot | Runs a supported Windows installation directly when the hardware and software allow it | Less convenient, and current Apple-silicon Macs do not provide the same Boot Camp path available on some Intel Macs |
| Native Mac version | Uses a build designed for macOS, potentially including Apple-silicon support | Only available when the publisher provides one |
Whisky is therefore best understood as a per-game compatibility experiment. A successful installation of one title does not demonstrate that another title will work.
What determines whether a game works?
Compatibility depends on the exact game and configuration, not simply on whether the Mac has an M-series chip. Important variables include:
- The game build and storefront: Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and publisher launchers can deliver different files, dependencies and copy-protection systems.
- The launcher: A game may be compatible in isolation but fail because its launcher, updater or account component is not.
- Graphics API: DirectX version, shader compilation and the translation path used by the compatibility layer can affect startup and rendering.
- DRM and copy protection: Some protection systems expect Windows-specific services or drivers that Wine-based environments cannot provide.
- Anti-cheat: Kernel-level or otherwise tightly integrated anti-cheat systems are a common barrier. Competitive multiplayer games can be especially difficult if their anti-cheat software does not support the environment.
- Windows components: A title may require particular runtimes, media components, fonts, .NET versions or other dependencies.
- macOS and toolkit versions: An operating-system update or change in the underlying toolkit can alter behavior, even when the game itself has not changed.
- Input and peripherals: A game can launch while still having incomplete controller support, incorrect button mappings or problems with an external device.
Do not treat a community game list as a guarantee. Reports are useful leads, but they can become outdated after a game, launcher, macOS version or compatibility wrapper is updated. Reports from CrossOver are also not automatic proof that the same title will behave identically in Whisky.

Whisky’s maintenance status matters
Whisky’s official website currently says that Whisky is no longer maintained and recommends CrossOver instead. That is the most important fact for anyone considering a new installation.
The official GitHub releases page still lists Whisky 2.3.5. That release includes fixes such as a configuration-view crash fix for macOS 15.4 and improved behavior for pinned programs on external drives. Those fixes may make an existing release more usable, but a published release is not evidence of continuing feature development or future compatibility. It does not guarantee that Whisky will continue to work after a macOS, Steam, launcher or game update.
The practical conclusion is:
Whisky may remain useful for an existing installation, but its own website now labels the project unmaintained. If you are starting from scratch, compare it with a maintained alternative and check the target game first.
Check a game before installing Whisky
Use this workflow rather than assuming that an Apple-silicon Mac can run a particular Windows title.
- Identify the exact game version. Record the storefront, edition, launcher and whether the game is single-player or dependent on online services.
- Look for a native Mac release. If the publisher offers a macOS or Apple-silicon version, evaluate that first. A native build generally avoids the extra compatibility layer and Windows-launcher dependencies.
- Search current reports for the exact title. Look for the game, launcher, macOS version and wrapper or toolkit context together. CodeWeavers’ searchable compatibility database is a useful reference because it records reports per application rather than promising universal compatibility.
- Investigate anti-cheat and DRM. Check the publisher’s support information and recent user reports for required anti-cheat drivers, kernel components, launchers or other services that may not operate through Wine.
- Separate games when practical. Keeping a title or launcher in its own bottle can make troubleshooting safer. A dependency change for one game is then less likely to disturb another.
- Record the configuration. Write down the macOS version, Whisky release, toolkit version, game build, launcher, graphics settings and controller connection method.
- Plan for rollback and updates. Do not update every component at once. If a previously working game stops launching, the configuration record helps identify which change caused the problem.
Broad Whisky setup sequence
The precise interface can change, and Whisky’s unmaintained status means old screenshots and menu labels should not be treated as permanent instructions. The general process is:

- Install a Whisky release appropriate for an Apple-silicon Mac.
- Create a new bottle for the game or launcher.
- Install the relevant Windows launcher or game executable into that bottle.
- Install the game through the launcher, or point Whisky at the appropriate executable when the title does not require a launcher.
- Create a shortcut for the game’s executable if the interface offers that option.
- Launch the title and test the parts that matter: startup, menus, rendering, audio, saves, controller input, online login and multiplayer.
- Change one setting at a time and keep notes about every change.
There is no honest universal set of Whisky settings. A setting that helps one game can hurt another. Avoid guides that promise “zero configuration,” “native performance” or compatibility with almost any Windows game unless they identify a specific game and a dated, reproducible configuration.

Apple Game Porting Toolkit is not a consumer compatibility guarantee
Apple positions Game Porting Toolkit primarily as a developer and evaluation resource. Apple’s documentation describes evaluating an unmodified Windows executable on Apple silicon and includes tools such as Metal Shader Converter plus performance and debugging utilities intended to help developers port games.
That explains why third-party projects such as Whisky can use a toolkit-based environment, but it does not mean Apple promises that every Windows game will run for consumers. Apple’s developer materials discuss both CrossOver and Whisky as ways the community has used this technology; they do not turn either product into a universal Windows-gaming platform.
Controller support and an optional accessory
Keyboard and mouse input may be enough for strategy, simulation and many PC-first games. For titles designed around a gamepad, an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is a practical optional accessory. Apple documents Mac support for compatible Bluetooth and wired controllers, including Xbox Wireless Controller models with Bluetooth, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controllers, and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.

Controller support is not the same as game compatibility. A controller cannot fix a launcher failure, unsupported anti-cheat system or graphics problem. Individual Windows games running through a compatibility layer may expose different button mappings or require a wired connection. Depending on the Mac and controller, wired use may also require a suitable USB adapter.

Whisky’s own website points users toward CrossOver, which is the maintained commercial option to investigate next. CodeWeavers documents CrossOver for both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs and provides a searchable compatibility database along with controller-related guidance.
CrossOver and Whisky should not be treated as identical. They can differ in compatibility, configuration, interface, update cadence and pricing. CrossOver is not the same product as Whisky, and it should not be described as free simply because both use Wine-related technology.
The sensible comparison is:
- Already have Whisky working? Keep a record of the working setup and avoid unnecessary updates if the game is important to you. Have a fallback plan because future macOS or game updates may break it.
- Starting from zero? Search for the exact title in CodeWeavers’ compatibility database and compare the results with current Whisky reports before choosing.
- Need ongoing support and updates? A maintained commercial product is generally the more defensible starting point, although it still cannot guarantee that every game or anti-cheat system will work.
- Need a native build? Prefer the publisher’s Mac version when one exists and meets your requirements.
Bottom line
Yes, Whisky can play some Windows games on Apple-silicon Macs. It does so by combining Wine and Apple Game Porting Toolkit components in a macOS wrapper, not by installing Windows or making every Windows game compatible.
