Yes—many games downloaded from Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app can run without an internet connection. Before disconnecting, sign in to the account that owns the game (or the active PC Game Pass subscription), install and authenticate the title, enable Offline permissions for that Windows PC, and launch the game once while online. Offline access is not permanent: Microsoft requires the license to be renewed periodically, and online-only features may still fail.
What “offline” means for Microsoft Store games
Microsoft Store games use digital licenses that are checked against both your account and a Windows device. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation says that when Offline permissions are enabled for a device, a title can launch without an active internet connection to check its license. The same documentation warns that the license must be renewed periodically over the internet; offline permissions are not a permanent way to bypass authentication.

That distinction matters. “Offline” normally means the installed game can start and its local, single-player content can run. It does not promise access to multiplayer servers, cloud saves, social systems, live events, server-side progression, or anti-cheat services. A game can therefore be correctly configured for offline use and still require a connection for particular modes.

Which Windows Store games can work offline?
Purchased Microsoft Store games
A game bought outright can support offline play when its licensing model permits it and the owning account has prepared the PC. Microsoft describes Store downloads as carrying both a device-based license and a user-based license. In the restrictive licensing model described by Microsoft, one Windows device may be authorized for offline use while another device is used online. The exact behavior remains title-dependent, so a purchase alone is not a guarantee that every mode will work offline.

PC Game Pass titles
PC Game Pass access follows the Microsoft account, the subscription’s current status, the game’s presence in the catalog, and compatible Windows-device rules. Downloading a title does not preserve access after the subscription ends or after the game leaves the catalog. Microsoft’s usage rules also limit each game to one device at a time. If you plan to play during travel, verify the subscription and catalog status before disconnecting and avoid starting the same title on another device.
Xbox Play Anywhere titles
Play Anywhere applies only to participating games marked with the Play Anywhere icon. Eligible purchases can cover compatible Windows devices and Xbox consoles under the program’s rules. Microsoft’s licensing guidance describes one PC and one console as available for offline use for participating titles, while also applying account and simultaneous-use restrictions. The icon is the practical test: a game that lacks it should not be assumed to share a purchase or an offline license across Xbox and Windows.
Online-only and service-dependent games
A local installation cannot replace a required server. Games built around persistent online worlds, server authentication, competitive matchmaking, cloud-only saves, or live economies may refuse to start or may offer only a limited mode offline. A title can also require specific hardware, software, peripherals, or other equipment; Microsoft’s Store rules allow functionality to be limited when those requirements are not present.

- Sign in to the owning account. Open Microsoft Store and, if you use it for the game, the Xbox PC app. Sign in with the account that purchased the title or holds the PC Game Pass subscription.
- Install the game completely. Download from Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app and wait for all updates and optional content you expect to use. Microsoft says an uninstalled purchase can be found in Microsoft Store under My Library; select the Download icon to reinstall it.
- Enable Offline permissions. In Microsoft Store, open the account or profile menu, go to Settings, find Offline permissions, and enable the option for this Windows PC. Microsoft’s controls and labels can change with Store updates, so use the settings search if the menu is arranged differently.
- Acquire the license while online. Keep the Store and account session active while the game finishes installing. Microsoft’s technical documentation requires the title’s license to be acquired and downloaded online before offline launching is possible.
- Launch the game once with the connection active. Reach the title’s main menu, and if the game has a first-run setup, complete it. This confirms that local files, account data, and the license state are present. Individual games can behave differently, so this first launch is a practical safeguard rather than a universal guarantee.
- Test before leaving. Quit the game, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, and launch it again. Try the particular save, campaign, or mode you intend to use. Testing at home is safer than discovering a missing license on a flight.
How long does offline access last?
Microsoft states that the offline license must be renewed periodically, but it does not publish one universal interval for every Store game and licensing model. Treat offline access as intermittent rather than indefinite: reconnect while online from time to time, open the Store or Xbox PC app, and launch the game so the license can refresh. Do not rely on a single download remaining valid for an entire season of travel.
Microsoft’s current Game Development Kit documentation says the designated offline PC can be changed up to three times in a 365-day period. Because that allowance is limited, designate the computer you will actually carry or use for offline play. Repeatedly moving the offline designation between a desktop, laptop, and family PC can exhaust the allowance before the year has elapsed.
Purchased, Game Pass, and Play Anywhere: practical differences
| Option | Access basis | Offline preparation | Device and use limits | What can still require internet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purchased Microsoft Store game | User and device licenses attached to the purchase | Install while signed in, enable Offline permissions, acquire the license, and test a first launch | Licensing may support one offline Windows device plus an online device; exact title rules apply | Multiplayer, cloud features, authentication, live content, and required services |
| PC Game Pass game | Active subscription, Microsoft account, and catalog availability | Install and authenticate before disconnecting; keep the subscription valid | Each game can be played on only one device at a time under the usage rules | Subscription checks, games removed from the catalog, online modes, and server features |
| Xbox Play Anywhere game | Participating purchase identified by the Play Anywhere icon | Prepare the Windows installation and offline PC; console sharing follows the program’s rules | Compatible Windows devices and Xbox consoles; cited guidance allows one PC and one console for offline use | Online services, unsupported modes, and any game-specific server requirement |
If a comparable detail is not stated by Microsoft for a particular title—such as an exact renewal interval—assume the title’s own licensing and service requirements control rather than applying a universal number.
Why a downloaded game still asks you to connect
Offline permissions were never enabled
Downloading files is not the same as authorizing the PC. Reconnect, sign in to the owning account, open Microsoft Store settings, enable Offline permissions, and launch the game once online. Then disconnect and test again.

The wrong Microsoft account is active
Purchases and subscriptions belong to the account that made them. Check the account shown in Microsoft Store and the Xbox PC app. If the game was installed under a different account, sign out and back in with the owner’s account while online, then repeat the first-launch test.
The PC Game Pass entitlement changed
For a subscription title, confirm that PC Game Pass is active and that the game remains in the catalog. A canceled subscription, an expired payment, or catalog removal can invalidate offline access even when every game file is still on the drive.
The title needs an online service
Some games check a server for matchmaking, anti-cheat, cloud saves, account progression, or persistent-world data. If the offline campaign starts but a menu item fails, that may be normal rather than a damaged installation. Look for a local campaign or single-player mode and configure saves to remain on the device when the game offers that choice.
Required hardware or software is missing
Microsoft’s Store rules allow limited functionality when a title depends on particular hardware, peripherals, or supporting software. Connect or install the required component while online, and check the game’s own requirements before travel. An offline license cannot satisfy a missing controller, runtime, sensor, or other dependency.

The offline-PC change allowance was exhausted
If you have changed the designated offline computer repeatedly, you may have reached Microsoft’s limit of three changes in 365 days. Keep using the currently authorized PC until the allowance becomes available again; changing accounts or reinstalling the game does not create a new allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do before a flight or other long offline period
- Update Windows, Microsoft Store, the Xbox PC app, and the game while connected.
- Open the game and reach the main menu at least once after the final update.
- Test the exact campaign, save slot, controller, headset, and graphics settings you plan to use.
- Keep the PC signed in to the account that owns the purchase or subscription.
- Leave enough storage for patches and local saves; do not uninstall optional content you expect to use.
- Reconnect periodically when practical so the Store license can renew.
Can saves and achievements work offline?
Local saves can work offline when the game stores them on the PC and does not require a server to validate progression. Cloud synchronization, cross-device saves, social features, and some achievement systems may wait until the next connection. To avoid conflicts, finish a session normally, exit the game, and reconnect before switching to another device. Do not assume that a save created offline is immediately available on an Xbox console or another Windows PC.
A reliable decision rule
Use this quick test before buying or downloading for travel:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Is the game installed from Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app and tied to the account you will use?
- Does the title offer a genuine local mode, rather than requiring a persistent server?
- Have you enabled Offline permissions on the specific PC?
- Have you launched it online after the final installation or update?
- For Game Pass, will the subscription and catalog entitlement remain valid?
- For Play Anywhere, does the game display the Play Anywhere icon?
If any answer is “no,” offline play is uncertain. Resolve that item while connected, or choose a title whose core mode is clearly local.
