The claim that Panic has warned Playdate owners to update before older system certificates expire is not verified by the official sources available here. The affected OS versions, any deadline, and the consequences of not updating are therefore unknown. Playdate’s manual has system-update help, and a Panic announcement from 2023 gives an on-device update route—but that announcement does not confirm or address this certificate warning.
What is—and is not—confirmed about the warning
The original Panic public-service announcement could not be located in the sources reviewed. The title’s wording is not a verified quotation from Panic, so it should not be treated as confirmation of a certificate-expiration event.
In particular, no official source cited here identifies the certificates, says when they expire, names affected Playdate OS versions, or explains what would happen if a device is not updated. Claims about losing games, losing Catalog access, or a device becoming unusable would be speculation.
How to check for a Playdate system update
Playdate’s official manual includes a section on updating the device. Separately, in a July 11, 2023 announcement about OS/SDK 2.0.1, Panic staff member Sally Hatfield directed users to update “via the system prompt or Settings > System > System Update.” This is historical, general update guidance for that release—not confirmation that an update fixes the certificate issue described in the title.

- Check the Playdate screen for a system update prompt.
- Alternatively, open Settings > System > System Update, the route given in Panic’s July 2023 OS/SDK 2.0.1 announcement.
- For current device-update instructions, consult the Playdate manual. Do not assume that following the historical route resolves the certificate warning unless Panic’s notice or current official guidance says so.
What Playdate owners should verify before acting on a deadline
Look for the original Panic notice or an equivalent official Playdate source before relying on a claimed expiration date or security impact. A reliable notice should specify the affected OS versions, the relevant certificate or service, the deadline, and the recommended action. Those details are not established by the sources cited here.
