Yes. Jason Gin got Doom II running locally on a Keysight DSOX1102G digital oscilloscope by exposing its hidden Windows Embedded CE 6.0 desktop. The game ran in a 320 × 240 window at about 3 frames per second—not smoothly, but unmistakably on the instrument itself.
Can you run Doom on a Keysight oscilloscope?
In this case, yes: the device was the Keysight DSOX1102G, a 1000 X-Series oscilloscope. The instrument normally presents Keysight’s measurement interface rather than a general-purpose Windows desktop, but its underlying operating system was Windows Embedded CE 6.0. Hackaday’s Dan Maloney reported Gin’s demonstration on October 18, 2018; the scope was one Gin had won in Keysight’s “Scope Month” giveaway.
This is a report about one exact model and one successful experiment, not evidence that Doom runs on every Keysight scope—or that the technique is a supported feature.
How did Gin reach the hidden Windows CE desktop?
A startup crash exposed the system
Gin began with occasional crashes that revealed pieces of the Windows CE interface. He found that leaving an external floppy drive connected to the scope’s USB port during startup could trigger a repeatable crash and expose more of the system. The recovery process called for switching quickly between that USB device and the input peripherals, so he made a USB A/B switch from an old USB cable, a dead hub, and a DPDT switch. A keyboard and mouse let him operate the desktop once it appeared.

From recovery state to a usable desktop
In Gin’s account, he placed infiniiVisionStartupOverride.txt at the root of a USB flash drive formatted as FAT or FAT32. From the recovery state, he used Explorer, stopped processStartupFolder.exe and recoverInfiniiVision.exe, restored the taskbar, and used a registry change to enable the command prompt. The Scope Liberator archive he described contained the files and instructions for this process.
That sequence is a description of the reported experiment, not a guarantee of a safe or repeatable procedure on another instrument. Gin warned that attempting it could cause damage or unpleasant failures.

Is Doom running on it?
Yes. Gin’s stated result was Doom II running on his DSOX1102G at roughly 3 frames per second in a 320 × 240 window. He reported 100 MB of RAM visible to the exposed system. The Windows CE port requires an ARM executable and a Doom IWAD; Chocolate Doom’s Windows CE documentation lists the DSOX1102G and associates the device with Gin’s October 2018 demonstration.
Gin said reaching the Doom milestone took a year and a half. The modest frame rate and small window make this a proof of local execution rather than a practical way to play the game.

What the demonstration does—and does not—establish
- Local execution: the account describes Doom running on the oscilloscope, rather than a remote computer merely sending it a picture.
- Input: a keyboard and mouse were used to control the exposed desktop.
- Model compatibility: Gin said he tested the files only on his DSOX1102G. He suspected that other 1000 X-Series or firmware-recovery-capable Keysight scopes might work, but did not establish compatibility with them.
- Persistence: the account describes volatile RAM behavior, so the setup should not be treated as a permanent installation that survives a reboot.
- Risk: this relies on provoking and manipulating a recovery state, not on an officially supported gaming mode; failures may affect the instrument.
For comparisons with other unusual Doom ports, the useful distinctions are whether the game executes on the device or is streamed to it, how input is handled, the actual resolution and frame rate, how access to the operating system is obtained, and whether the setup survives restarting. Gin’s DSOX1102G account supplies answers for those points, but they should not be generalized to other hardware without separate evidence.
