PlayStation Franchises That Deserve a PS5 or PS6 Comeback: 13 Fan Picks

Sony has not announced a revival plan for these series, and there is no confirmed PS6 launch date. This is a wishlist built around a June 3, 2026 opinion piece by Andrew Highton for Insider Gaming: 13 PlayStation properties that could broaden Sony’s lineup beyond its current pillars. The appeal of the list is its range, from military science-fiction shooters and arcade racers to family quiz games and physics-driven adventures.

Each pick below asks two practical questions: what made the original series distinctive, and what would a modern sequel need to preserve or rethink? The choices are opinions, not evidence of audience surveys, sales forecasts, leaked projects or an approved Sony slate.

What this 13-game wishlist is actually saying

The list’s organizing idea is variety. It covers shooters, platformers, racing, stealth action, vehicular combat, quiz games, open-world superpower games and cinematic action-adventure. That breadth matters because a revival should add a different kind of experience rather than imitate the established formula of another PlayStation series.

The order is the author’s order, not a data-backed ranking. No comparable sales, player-count or demand dataset establishes that one dormant property is more valuable than another. A useful way to judge the proposals is to consider five qualitative tests:

NBA 2K26 - PlayStation 5
  • POWERED BY ProPLAY: Dominate every possession with immersive technology that directly translates NBA footage into realistic gameplay. Feel more connected to every dribble and crossover with revamped size-ups and experience fast-paced, dynamic movement with all-new ProPLAY features.
  • SQUAD UP IN THE CITY: Build a transcendent MyPLAYER and climb the competitive ranks to reach the pinnacle of NBA stardom in an all-new MyCAREER journey. Team up with friends in a stunning, streamlined City, earn recognition and increase your REP, and battle rival squads for Park supremacy.
  • UNITE STARS IN MyTEAM: Collect and compete with past and present legends of the game in MyTEAM. Assemble a star-studded roster, put your dream team to the test in new single-player and multiplayer modes, and acquire new cards to make your MyTEAM fantasy a reality.
  • YOUR TEAM, YOUR STORY: Lead an NBA franchise as a General Manager in MyNBA. Choose from all 30 teams, experience 30 unique MyGM storylines with real-world inspiration, and chase the ultimate goal: to win a championship. Influence the future of the sport and leave an indelible mark on the league.
  • Genre variety: Would the game fill a gap in the current first-party portfolio?
  • Distinctive hook: Can a player describe the series’ central mechanic in one sentence?
  • World and characters: Is there a setting, cast or conflict worth revisiting?
  • Audience reach: Could it serve players who do not usually buy Sony’s biggest action games?
  • Modern translation: Can the original appeal survive contemporary controls, accessibility expectations and online infrastructure?

Those tests explain why the list mixes famous names with smaller or more unusual properties. A comeback does not have to be a huge open-world production; a focused downloadable game, co-op release or carefully scoped remake could suit some of these series better.

The 13 franchises at a glance

LittleBigPlanet Creative platforming and connected player-made content Accessible creation tools with reliable social moderation
Resistance Alternate-history story, Chimera and unconventional weapons A story-led first-person shooter with a different enemy ecology
MotorStorm Chaotic mixed-vehicle arcade racing Large, reactive courses built for spectacle and replayability
Syphon Filter Stealth-action missions across console and PSP entries Covert operations designed around modern stealth systems
Sly Cooper Character-led platform adventure and heists A stylish, mission-based return with a clear ensemble focus

Buzz! Hosted quiz-show presentation and buzzer peripherals Local and online party play that keeps the theatrical format
Twisted Metal Vehicular combat driven by weapons, arenas and characters A focused combat game that treats cars as distinct characters
Jak & Daxter Platforming adventure led by a contrasting duo A return to the first game’s exploration-first identity
Gravity Rush Gravity manipulation, Kat and Dusty Vertical cities designed around readable, physics-bending movement
inFamous Superpowers in an open-world moral-action structure A new power set or a carefully chosen return for Cole MacGrath
Uncharted Cinematic treasure-hunting action adventure A new lead or era without undoing the original ending

1. Killzone: bring back a PlayStation shooter with its own visual language

Killzone’s strongest asset is the Helghast. Their masks, red optics and militarized design give the series an immediately recognizable enemy faction, while the campaigns provide a more grounded counterpoint to fantastical shooters. The wishlist argues that PlayStation could use another marquee shooter rather than leaving that space to competitors.

What a revival should preserve

A new game should keep the deliberate weapon handling, oppressive atmosphere and faction-driven conflict that separated Killzone from lighter arcade shooters. It would also need a campaign premise that makes the Helghast more than target practice. A compact, polished single-player campaign could establish the identity before Sony commits to a larger multiplayer ecosystem.

2. LittleBigPlanet: make creation feel inviting again

LittleBigPlanet combined platforming with tools that let players build and share their own stages. Its appeal was not simply jumping through levels; it was the feeling that a playful world could be edited, remixed and visited with friends. The series also continued beyond Media Molecule’s original stewardship, showing that its concept was not inseparable from one internal team.

What a revival should preserve

The priority would be a welcoming creation loop: make something quickly, test it with friends and discover other players’ work without wrestling with opaque menus. Any modern version would need strong moderation, dependable servers and clear discovery tools. The creative premise can remain intact while the publishing workflow, accessibility options and cooperative tools catch up with current expectations.

3. Resistance: an alternate-history FPS with stranger weapons

Resistance is remembered for its story, the Chimera antagonist and weapons that behaved differently from standard military hardware. That combination gave its first-person shooting a specific identity: the player was not merely clearing familiar battlefields but adapting to an invasion with an unfamiliar biological and technological threat.

What a revival should preserve

The Chimera should remain a meaningful part of the fiction, with enemy behaviors that demand different tactics. A new campaign could avoid repeating the original chronology by focusing on another region or an earlier stage of the conflict. The key is variety in encounters and weapons, not an arms race for the largest map or most elaborate live-service structure.

4. MotorStorm: return to dangerous, mixed-surface racing

MotorStorm made arcade racing feel unstable in the best way. Bikes, trucks, cars and other vehicles fought for space across mud, rock, snow and other changing environments. Routes could collapse into disorder as each class took a different line, creating races that were as much about improvisation as braking points.

Resident Evil Requiem Amazon Exclusive Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

What a revival should preserve

Vehicle classes should remain genuinely distinct, and courses should reward risk without making outcomes random. A modern entry could use dynamic weather, deformable surfaces and short competitive events instead of chasing an enormous open world. Local split-screen, robust online matchmaking and a campaign built around escalating festival events would reinforce the series’ immediate, social character.

5. Syphon Filter: a stealth-action series ready for a focused return

The wishlist points to Syphon Filter’s stealth-action identity, its PSP entries and Bend Studio’s later experience as reasons to revisit it. The series’ premise supports missions that alternate between infiltration, surveillance and sudden firefights rather than committing to only one pace.

What a revival should preserve

A new game should make stealth a set of readable choices: disguise, line of sight, sound, gadgets and escape routes. It could modernize checkpointing and controls without turning every mission into a cover shooter. Claims about the series’ current store access or commercial performance should be treated cautiously; the available material does not establish a complete regional catalog or a verified demand figure.

6. Sly Cooper: another heist for a character-led platform adventure

Sly Cooper’s mix of expressive characters, stealthy platforming and heist structure gives it a different tone from most modern action games. Sly, Bentley and Murray work because each member contributes a distinct skill and personality, while the target-of-the-week format naturally supports varied locations.

What a revival should preserve

The next game should keep readable platforming, optional collectibles and missions built around the whole crew rather than reducing Sly to a generic action hero. Sanzaru’s previous work on the property demonstrates that stewardship has already extended beyond the original creator, but any new team would need to retain the series’ comic timing and visual clarity.

7. Ape Escape: a frantic 3D platformer for a broader audience

Ape Escape offers a simple, expressive premise: chase mischievous monkeys with a toolbox of gadgets. The result is a platformer driven by movement, quick reactions and playful problem solving. The wishlist uses Astro Bot as an example of continued interest in platforming, not as proof that a new Ape Escape has been approved.

What a revival should preserve

Gadgets should change how players approach spaces, while each monkey encounter should feel like a small puzzle rather than a routine collectible. The author says there had been no new Ape Escape game for 15 years as of the 2026 article; that is the article’s characterization, not an independently verified release-history statistic here. A new entry could work as a family-friendly showcase for precise motion, haptics and accessible difficulty settings.

8. Buzz!: turn the quiz show into a modern party format

Buzz! was built around a host, rapid-fire questions and novelty buzzer controllers. Its appeal came from presentation as much as trivia: players were cast as contestants in a living-room game show, with quick rounds that let non-specialists join in.

  • Build your ultimate fantasy team with a new Red Diamond rarity tier and World Baseball Classic player cards featuring elite game-changing players
  • NEW Revamped Front Office Experience Play the nail-biting key matches and moments of your Franchise GM career with streamlined seasons and Custom Game Entry

What a revival should preserve

The format should support same-room groups first, then add optional online play. Question packs would need a transparent update model, regional editing and robust parental controls. A phone-based controller option could lower the hardware barrier, but a dedicated buzzer set would still make the experience feel like Buzz! rather than a generic quiz app.

9. Twisted Metal: vehicular combat with a strong theatrical identity

Twisted Metal treats cars as weapons and characters. Arenas, special attacks and exaggerated drivers create a combat game that is fundamentally different from a conventional racing title. The wishlist connects renewed interest in game adaptations and the television series with the case for another game, but current television-season status should not be assumed without a fresh primary-source check.

What a revival should preserve

Each vehicle needs a tactical personality, not merely a different acceleration statistic. Short arena matches, destructible cover and a campaign built around rival drivers would make the concept legible immediately. The design should resist becoming an oversized open-world driving game; the series works best when every corner is an invitation to ambush an opponent.

10. Jak & Daxter: recover the platforming heart of the first game

The first Jak & Daxter established a bright platforming adventure centered on exploration, movement and the relationship between its two leads. Later entries changed tone and genre emphasis, which is why the wishlist specifically favors returning to the original platforming identity.

What a revival should preserve

Traversal should be the main verb, with environments that teach abilities through play instead of filling a map with chores. Jak and Daxter’s contrast can carry the story without relying on a grim reboot. A new adventure could expand the world, add cooperative challenges or introduce accessibility assists while keeping the clean rhythm of jumping, collecting and discovering.

11. Gravity Rush: rebuild a world around falling in any direction

Gravity Rush stands out through Kat, her companion Dusty and movement that lets players redirect gravity. The series moved from Vita to PS4, demonstrating that its central idea can scale to a larger screen while retaining its unusual sense of space.

What a revival should preserve

The city must be designed for gravity shifts rather than treating them as a gimmick layered over ordinary streets. Clear visual landmarks, a controllable camera and generous orientation cues would make vertical navigation readable. Kat’s character-led story and Dusty’s role should remain central, because the emotional hook is as important as the physics.

12. inFamous: bring back consequential superpowered open-world play

inFamous combined open-world traversal with superpowers and moral decisions. Its central fantasy was not simply having abilities; it was deciding how those abilities affected the city and the people living in it. The wishlist highlights the possibility of revisiting Cole MacGrath, the original protagonist.

  • MASCOT MASHUP – Play as your favorite mascot, collect 120+ icons, and compete in wild 11-on-11 matchups full of school spirit.

What a revival should preserve

A new game could follow Cole, another established character or an entirely new conduit, but the powers should shape movement, combat and the social consequences of missions. The moral system needs more nuance than a pair of cosmetic endings. A denser city with meaningful civilian systems would make choices feel consequential without requiring a map larger than the story can support.

13. Uncharted: continue the world without erasing its ending

Uncharted remains a natural candidate for another story because its setting supports different generations of treasure hunters. The wishlist names Nathan Drake, his daughter Cassie or Sully as possible leads. That is a set of creative options, not evidence that any of those projects is in production.

What a revival should preserve

The essential ingredients are character chemistry, readable traversal, set pieces that serve the story and puzzles that break up combat. A Cassie-led game could explore a new era without making Nathan’s conclusion irrelevant; a Sully story could use a different pace and scale. Whatever the lead, the next chapter should avoid treating escalation as a substitute for personality.

What PS5 owners can play now—and what that does not prove

Some older PlayStation games already have PS5-compatible versions, but that is not evidence that all 13 wishlist franchises have current entries. Sony’s Japanese PlayStation Store pages list MediEvil for PS4 and PS5 and describe added features including DualSense wireless controller vibration support. The same region’s PlayStation page lists The Legend of Dragoon for PS4 and PS5 with up-rendering, rewind, quick save and custom video filters. It also warns that some original features or peripherals may not work exactly as they did on original hardware. Availability and pricing can differ by country, so readers should check their local store.

On February 14, 2026, PlayStation Blog introduced Console Archives as a PS5 series for older console games. The announced feature set includes multiple save states, button remapping, rapid-fire settings, screen-layout and size adjustments, and filters intended to reproduce a CRT appearance. Those tools describe the platform’s preservation features; they do not confirm that any particular franchise in this wishlist will be added.

Why a PS6 mention remains hypothetical

There is no established PS6 launch date or official Sony commitment to revive these properties. “PS5 and PS6” is therefore a time horizon for discussion, not a production schedule. Any claim that a specific title is being prepared for either console would require a current announcement from Sony or the responsible developer.

The practical question is not whether every series should receive a full-price blockbuster. Killzone and Resistance could support focused shooters; LittleBigPlanet and Buzz! could emphasize creation or social play; MotorStorm and Twisted Metal could return as tightly scoped competitive games; and Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, Jak & Daxter and Gravity Rush could provide platforming variety. Matching budget and format to each series’ hook would be more credible than giving every property the same open-world treatment.

The takeaway for PlayStation fans

These 13 franchises matter because they represent kinds of games that are easy to miss when a portfolio concentrates on a few familiar genres. The list is an invitation to say which distinctive ideas deserve another chance and what a modern version should change. It is not a leak, a prediction or a promise. Until Sony announces otherwise, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, MotorStorm, Syphon Filter, Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, Buzz!, Twisted Metal, Jak & Daxter, Gravity Rush, inFamous and Uncharted remain wishlist candidates for PS5 or a future PlayStation generation.
