Yes—some PlayStation games let you play online without PS Plus. Sony says most free-to-play games do not require a membership for online multiplayer, naming Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. Sony does not publish a complete list of qualifying games on its general information pages, so check the game’s PlayStation Store listing for your region before you rely on an exception.
Which PlayStation games can you play online without PS Plus?
Sony’s published examples are free-to-play titles. Its PlayStation Plus FAQ says that “Most free to play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone do not require a membership.” The phrase “such as” makes these examples, not a complete list.

Other free-to-play games may also allow online multiplayer without PS Plus, but Sony’s general guidance does not name every eligible title. There is no definitive all-games count to give from that guidance.
Do you need PS Plus for online multiplayer?
As a rule, Sony says most purchased PS4 and PS5 games require an active PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer. Free-to-play games are the main exception: most do not require membership for that purpose. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ and online multiplayer support page for its guidance.

The rule is about online multiplayer, not every online function. A title may have modes or network features with different access requirements, so do not assume that every feature is included in an exception.
How to check whether a game requires PS Plus
- Open the game’s listing in the PlayStation Store for your country or region.
- Check the listing’s online-play information for whether PlayStation Plus is required.
- Confirm that the listing matches the version you intend to play, including PS4 or PS5 where relevant.
- If the game has multiple modes, check the requirements for the specific online mode you want to use.
Sony Support specifically advises players to check the Store listing to see whether PS Plus is required for online play. This is more reliable than assuming every free-to-play title is exempt or relying on an old list, because requirements and availability can change and may differ by region.

What if a child account cannot access online features?
Not requiring PS Plus does not necessarily mean every account can use a game’s network features. Sony says access may be restricted according to a child’s age or the account’s parental-control settings. Check those settings if an online option is unavailable even though the Store listing does not require a subscription.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the rule vary by country?
Check the Store listing in your own region rather than treating one country’s terms as universal. For example, Sony’s March 2026 UK English terms say an active PlayStation Plus subscription is needed for online multiplayer unless a particular game states otherwise. That wording is specific to the UK terms and should not be generalized to every region.
