If the affected service is reported down, wait for Sony to restore it; changing console or router settings will not fix an outage. If services are running, use your console’s connection test, then work through the least disruptive checks: restart the console and router, test Ethernet, and investigate account or game-specific problems.
Is PlayStation Network down right now?
Sony’s U.S. status page reported Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct as running when checked on August 18, 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of current or worldwide availability. Check Sony’s live PlayStation Service Status page for your region before troubleshooting.
Services are listed separately, so a partial outage can affect sign-in or online play while the Store still works, or leave the Store unavailable while other PSN features remain accessible. A third-party outage-reporting site can provide clues from user reports, but reports alone do not confirm a Sony outage.
- If Sony lists the affected service as down: wait and check the status page again later. Do not factory-reset the console or change network settings to address a Sony-side outage.
- If Sony lists services as running: continue with the tests below. Status can change, so check again if the symptoms shift.
Identify what is failing
“PSN not loading” can mean several different things. Pin down the failed feature before changing settings:

- Does the PlayStation Store load, or does it spin indefinitely?
- Are friends, messages, parties, or other Gaming and Social features unavailable?
- Are downloads stuck, or is PlayStation Plus information missing?
- Does online access fail in one game only, while other PSN features work?
- Do other devices in the home have internet access?
The console can be connected to Wi-Fi and the internet without successfully signing in to PSN. Network connection, internet access, PSN authentication, NAT behavior, and a game publisher’s servers are separate stages; success at one does not prove the next is working.
Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause

These are diagnostic clues, not definitive diagnoses. For example, a hotspot working strongly suggests a home-network or ISP-path issue, but it does not prove that every console function is healthy.
Run the connection test and check the result
On PS5
- Open Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection to review or reconfigure the connection. Menu wording can change with system-software updates.
- In Network settings, run the console’s connection test. Note whether it fails while obtaining an IP address, connecting to the internet, signing in to PlayStation Network, or reporting NAT and speed results.
On PS4
- Go to Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection and note which stage fails. Sony’s PS4 User Guide documents this test.
- To review or set up the saved connection, go to Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection. Choose Wi-Fi or LAN; start with Easy setup unless there is a specific reason to configure Custom settings.
Sony’s connectivity support covers connection setup and system updates for PS5 and PS4. Record the exact error code if one appears; it is more useful for support than a general description such as “the internet is broken.”

Try the low-risk fixes first
1. Fully restart the console
Restart the PS5 or PS4 rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. This is a sensible first step if menus are stuck, sign-in timed out, or a connection test succeeds intermittently. Sony’s guidance for several PSN connection errors also recommends restarting the console; see its pages for WS-116420-4 and WS-116414-7.

- Turn off the console.
- Turn off the modem and router. If they are separate devices, switch off both.
- Leave them off for at least five minutes, as Sony recommends in its connection-error guidance.
- Turn on the modem and wait for it to reconnect to the internet.
- Turn on the router, if separate, and wait until it is fully online.
- Restart the console and test the connection again.
This is a restart, not a factory reset. A factory reset can erase network settings and should not be an early troubleshooting step.
3. Separate Wi-Fi trouble from other connection problems
- If practical, connect the console directly to the router with Ethernet. Sony recommends a wired connection where possible; it also removes many wireless variables from the test.
- If Ethernet is unavailable, move the console nearer the router, reduce obstructions and interference, and try another Wi-Fi band if your router offers one.
- Temporarily avoid a mesh node or extender, and pause heavy downloads or streaming on other devices while testing.
- Check whether parental controls, DNS filtering, ad blocking, or a managed network might block PlayStation services.
A high advertised download speed does not rule out latency, packet loss, poor Wi-Fi, DNS resolution, NAT behavior, or blocked traffic as the cause.

4. Reconfigure the saved connection
If the connection test fails or the console may have stale settings, set up the saved connection again. On PS5, use Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection; on PS4, use Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection. Begin with the ordinary automatic settings for IP address, DHCP host name, and MTU. Use Custom settings only when the basic setup fails and you know what the network requires.
5. Install available software updates
On PS5, check Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings. PS4 users should follow Sony’s current system-software instructions through its connectivity support page. Also check the router maker’s own instructions for firmware updates; the menu differs by model.

If loading or sign-in problems started after a console update, restart and check for another available update, but do not assume the update caused a general defect based on reports from individual users. Avoid deleting data or using unofficial instructions to alter hidden settings. Use Sony’s supported guidance for any cache or database procedure that matches your specific symptom.

Check account access, PlayStation Plus, and the game’s servers
When sign-in or one account is the problem
If the console reaches the internet but cannot sign in, try the official PlayStation Support hub for Account Management and security options. Check for a password reset, passkey confirmation, two-step verification issue, account notice, suspension or restriction notice, or updated terms prompt. If you are unsure of the password, use the official recovery route rather than repeatedly guessing.
When PlayStation Plus is relevant
PSN sign-in is not the same as access to a game’s online multiplayer. Some games require an active PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer, subject to Sony’s terms and exceptions; requirements can differ for free-to-play games and particular services. Sony’s PlayStation Network Terms of Service describes online-access conditions. Buying or renewing Plus does not repair a Sony outage, router problem, Store issue, or account sign-in failure.
When only one game fails
If PSN sign-in, the Store, and other online features work, check the game publisher’s server-status page and official channels. Look for a required game update, a publisher-account or account-linking issue, or information that the game’s online service has ended. Sony’s status page cannot establish whether a separate publisher’s game servers are available.

Use DNS or router settings only when the evidence points there
DNS is a targeted test, not a universal fix
DNS translates service names into network addresses. Sony says changing DNS may temporarily improve a connection, but does not prescribe one provider as a guaranteed fix. Consider it only after basic tests suggest a name-resolution issue. Record the original settings before changing them. A different DNS service will not restore a Sony outage or fix weak Wi-Fi, packet loss, account authentication, or a suspension.
Port forwarding and static IP are advanced measures
For PS5 connection troubleshooting, Sony lists these ports: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480; UDP 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535. See Sony’s WS-116420-4 guidance. Those numbers are not a promise that forwarding ports will fix a Store loading problem. The right setup depends on the router and ISP, and carrier-grade NAT may prevent the desired inbound behavior. Incorrect forwarding can create security and maintenance problems; Sony advises contacting the ISP for help with router and port settings. Treat static-IP changes as a last resort, not a routine repair.
What common PS5 error codes suggest
Sony’s descriptions identify possible connection problems, not one certain cause for each code. Open the exact code’s Sony support page for current steps rather than relying on a generic code list.

When to contact PlayStation Support or your ISP
Contact PlayStation
Use the PlayStation Support hub or its connectivity support if there is no reported outage and the issue persists after a restart, router power cycle, and connection reconfiguration. Contact Sony as well if the same console fails on multiple networks, cannot complete network setup, repeatedly shows one error code, or the problem may involve account security, a restriction, or hardware. Have the exact code and connection-test results ready.

Ask the ISP for help if other household devices also lose service, the modem shows an error, the console works on a phone hotspot but not home internet, or the issue appears tied to NAT or upstream filtering. A hotspot result points toward the home network or ISP path; it does not by itself identify which part is responsible.
