Stardew Valley 1.6 Arrived on Mobile: Mastery Area, New NPCs, Festivals and More

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stardew Valley’s major 1.6 update reached iPhone, iPad and Android on November 4, 2024. Mobile launched with version 1.6.9, bringing the PC update’s single-player content rather than a mobile-only expansion. The headline phrase “new location and characters” needs some context: the update adds a new area tied to Mastery, supporting NPCs and substantial new dialogue, but it does not introduce a new town or a large set of romanceable villagers.

The documented mobile version history later lists iOS and Android as equivalent to PC 1.6.15, although rollout notes can vary by store and region. Check the current listing on the App Store or Google Play for your device.

When did Stardew Valley 1.6 come to mobile?

ConcernedApe released Stardew Valley 1.6 on PC on March 19, 2024. The mobile and console ports followed on November 4, 2024, as version 1.6.9. That port included the preceding PC 1.6 updates and their single-player features. It was a catch-up release, not a separate mobile expansion. The mobile version history subsequently records both iOS and Android as equivalent to PC 1.6.15, released on PC on December 20, 2024.

Milestone Date or version What it means on mobile
PC 1.6 launch March 19, 2024 The original release of the 1.6 content update
Mobile and console launch November 4, 2024 Version 1.6.9 port with PC 1.6–1.6.9 single-player content
Later documented mobile equivalence PC 1.6.15 Maintenance updates beyond the launch port

Mobile 1.6.9 did not include non-LAN multiplayer. The version history describes later mobile multiplayer language as experimental or limited, so mobile should not be treated as feature-for-feature identical to the PC release.

What is the “new location”?

The Mastery area

The clearest match for a new location is the area associated with the Mastery system. Once you meet its progression requirements, you can access a dedicated space where Mastery tracks unlock powerful perks and items. It is an end-game progression hub, not a new town, island or open-world region.

Expanded places and events

Version 1.6 also makes existing destinations more substantial:

  • Desert Festival: a three-day spring event that becomes available after the bus is repaired.
  • Trout Derby and SquidFest: new fishing festivals with their own activities and rewards.
  • Mines and Volcano Dungeon: additional layouts and changes introduced across the 1.6 patches, including version 1.6.4.
  • Raccoon content: new events and a shop connected to a raccoon family.

Meadowlands Farm is another major addition, but it is a farm map selected when creating a save. It is not an extra destination that appears in an existing farm.

Which new characters were added?

Supporting NPCs and the raccoon family

The update adds new supporting character content rather than a new roster of marriage candidates. A new friend can appear in the Secret Woods after you lose an item that cannot otherwise be recovered; for a fee, this character retrieves it. The raccoon family receives its own events and shop-related content.

More to say from existing villagers

Much of the character expansion comes through dialogue. Villagers gain additional lines for gifts, changing circumstances and specific events, making relationships and daily routines less repetitive. Version 1.6.9 also added new work portraits for Sam and Shane while they work at JojaMart.

Nothing in the official 1.6 changelog describes a new romance system or a group of new marriageable villagers. Treat “new characters” as supporting NPCs, events and expanded conversations.

Major gameplay additions on mobile

Meadowlands Farm and animals

  • Meadowlands Farm starts with a coop and two chickens.
  • Blue grass is especially attractive to animals.
  • New pet breeds and a new pet type are available.
  • You can keep multiple pets, and pets can give gifts.

These features are listed in the mobile product information on the App Store.

Crafting, crops and progression

  • Big Chests provide more storage.
  • Dehydrators and Fish Smokers add new processing options.
  • New crops, furniture, skill books and Mastery rewards expand farming and progression.
  • Legendary fish ponds add a long-term fishing project.

Fishing, mines and everyday systems

  • Fish frenzies create concentrated fishing opportunities.
  • New mine and Volcano Dungeon layouts change familiar routes.
  • Beds can be used in certain constructed buildings.
  • Items dropped into water float temporarily instead of vanishing immediately.
  • NPCs can move chests out of their way rather than automatically destroying them.

The 1.6.4 notes also document further mine, Volcano Dungeon and event changes; see the official 1.6.4 patch notes for that maintenance release.

How mobile differs from PC

Touch-first controls remain central to the mobile edition. The store listings describe touch controls, virtual joystick options, auto-select and auto-attack behavior, pinch zoom and support for external controllers. A Bluetooth or wired controller is optional, not required, if touch input feels awkward.

Rank #4
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Feature parity also has limits. The mobile 1.6.9 port excluded non-LAN multiplayer, and the version history’s experimental wording should not be read as a guarantee of a complete, fully supported online multiplayer mode. Store notes and rollout timing can differ between iOS and Android and between regions.

How to update safely

  1. Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Stardew Valley.
  3. Open the official listing published by ConcernedApe (the Android listing is published under the game’s mobile publisher).
  4. Tap Update if one is offered. If the button says Open, your store may not yet be showing a newer build.
  5. Launch the game and check the title screen or app information for the installed version where your device exposes it.
  6. Create a copy or backup of your save before troubleshooting an interrupted update, file-access problem or reinstall.

Apple and Android do not expose identical save-management menus on every OS version. Do not assume that a backup made on one platform can always be moved directly to PC or console, especially for modded saves. The mobile version history also documents restrictions around which saves could be loaded across platforms in earlier implementations.

Should you continue an old farm or start over?

Continue an existing save when:

  • You want to reach Mastery, the Desert Festival and late-game events without losing established progress.
  • Your farm already has the repaired bus or other prerequisites for gated content.
  • You mainly want new machines, dialogue, fishing, mine and quality-of-life systems.

Start a new save when:

  • You specifically want to play on Meadowlands Farm.
  • You prefer to encounter the new systems in their intended progression order.
  • You want a fresh challenge rather than rebuilding an established farm around the new mechanics.

Most 1.6 additions are layered onto existing systems, so installing the update does not by itself require abandoning a working farm. Some content is deliberately gated: the Desert Festival requires the bus to be repaired, while Mastery is a late-game system.

What to expect after installing

The official iOS and Android listings continue to mention performance work and bug fixes. Individual Google Play reviews report crashes or file-management trouble, but those are user reports rather than evidence of a universal defect. Keep the game updated, retain a backup of important saves and avoid treating a modded installation as equivalent to the official mobile build.

For the full feature list, consult ConcernedApe’s 1.6 changelog and 1.6.9 changelog.
