Why was PlayStation Network down?
The cause was not established in the contemporaneous AP report. Sony had not immediately responded to a request for comment, and the report offered no technical explanation. There is no basis in that coverage to attribute the outage to a cyberattack, a DDoS attack, a cloud provider, or a particular network failure.
PlayStation’s Australia and New Zealand terms of service, version 10.2, say the company may take PSN or products offline to investigate a security incident or carry out maintenance and upgrades. That general contractual provision does not explain what happened on October 1, 2024. PlayStation Network Terms of Service for Australia and New Zealand.
