Extra is the better value only if you expect to play games in its Game Catalog or use Ubisoft+ Classics. If you mainly want online multiplayer and the monthly games, Essential already includes those benefits. Compare the games you actually want with the current price for your region and billing period: the catalog changes, so there is no universal break-even point.
What’s the difference between Essential and Extra?
Extra includes the benefits of Essential, then adds access to the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. PlayStation describes the catalog as containing hundreds of games, with new titles added regularly; the selection can change over time and by plan. PlayStation’s US plan and games page describes the tiers and catalog.

PlayStation says PS4 games will be added to the catalog only intermittently from January 2026. That is a change to the cadence of future additions, not a statement that existing PS4 catalog games will all be removed. Check the current catalog for the games and platforms you care about.
Do you need Extra for online multiplayer?
No. Online multiplayer is included with both Essential and Extra. PlayStation Support says most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but that requirement does not make Extra necessary if online play is your only reason to subscribe. How much do Essential and Extra cost in the US?
The following prices are those displayed on PlayStation’s US subscription page. They may differ in other regions or for other account offers. How to decide which tier is better value
- Check the current price for your region and billing period. Use the price presented to your account, not a price quoted for another country or offer.
- Look through the current Extra catalog. Focus on specific games you are genuinely likely to play while they are available, rather than the catalog’s overall size.
- Compare that selection with what you need from Essential. If monthly games and online multiplayer cover your needs, paying more for Extra may not add useful value.
The right choice depends on your play habits and the catalog at the time you subscribe. The available sources do not establish a fixed number of games or hours that makes Extra worth the additional cost for everyone.

Who should choose each plan?
Choose Essential if
- You mainly need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer.
- You want monthly games and the shared subscription benefits, but do not expect to use the Game Catalog.
- You would rather avoid paying Extra’s higher price for a changing selection you may not play.
Choose Extra if
- Several games currently in the Game Catalog are ones you expect to play.
- You value Ubisoft+ Classics as well as the benefits included with Essential.
- The extra cost for your chosen billing period makes sense for the catalog access you expect to use.
