PlayStation Plus plans at a glance
All three plans are recurring subscriptions that continue until canceled. The annual options are substantially less expensive than paying the listed monthly price for twelve months, but Sony’s prices below should not be treated as a guaranteed promotional saving.

Paying monthly for a full year would total $131.88 for Essential, $203.88 for Extra, and $239.88 for Premium. Those are simple calculations from the monthly prices, not Sony-advertised savings. The annual gap is $55 between Essential and Extra and $25 between Extra and Premium.
Quick recommendation: choose Essential if online multiplayer is your main reason to subscribe, Extra if you expect to download and play several games from a rotating library, and Premium only if its classics, trials, streaming, or Sony Pictures benefits are worth $25 more per year than Extra.
What every PlayStation Plus tier includes
Every tier includes the following core benefits:
- Monthly games that can be added to your PlayStation Plus game library.
- Online multiplayer for supported purchased PS4 and PS5 games.
- Exclusive PlayStation Store discounts.
- Selected exclusive in-game content and other member benefits.
- 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data.
- Share Play.
Online multiplayer is not required for most free-to-play games
Most purchased PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Many free-to-play games generally do not require a membership, including Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone. Individual games can still impose their own requirements or restrictions, so check the game’s listing when unsure.
If you only play free-to-play multiplayer games, Essential may provide little value unless you also want cloud saves, monthly games, discounts, or Share Play.
Cloud saves
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can hold up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. Sony limits PS4 saved-data files to 1,000.
On PS5, PS5 save data can automatically synchronize while the console is in rest mode if the relevant settings are enabled. PS4 saves uploaded to the cloud may need to be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage when you want to use them there.
Cloud saves are particularly useful if you replace a console, use more than one PlayStation, or want protection against losing local save data. They are not the same as a backup of the game itself: you still need access to the game through a purchase or an active membership.
Share Play and console sharing
Share Play lets a subscriber invite an online friend to watch a play session or participate in it. The invited friend does not need to own the game, although Share Play has platform and session limitations.

Sharing does not mean that every subscription benefit is available on every account or every console, so households should check the specific benefit they want to use.
Monthly games are different from the Game Catalog
This is the distinction most likely to cause disappointment:
- Monthly games: Add them to your library during the available claim period. You can download and play them while your PlayStation Plus membership remains active.
- Game Catalog: A rotating library of downloadable games included with Extra and Premium. Titles can have announced removal dates.
- Classics Catalog: A separate selection included with Premium. These games can also rotate or have access conditions.
A catalog game is not a permanent purchase just because you downloaded it. Access ends if the game leaves the relevant catalog or if your required membership expires. Do not choose Extra or Premium solely because one currently listed blockbuster is present; check Sony’s current A–Z catalog and removal notices before subscribing.
Example: August 2026 monthly games
As of August 12, 2026, Sony’s monthly games for all PlayStation Plus members were Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition, Big Walk, and Signalis. They were available from August 4 through August 31, 2026. This is a dated example, not a permanent part of the service; the monthly lineup should be checked again after the claim window.

Sony also says that, beginning in January 2026, PS4 games are being added to PlayStation Plus only intermittently. That matters if you are considering Extra or Premium mainly for a steady stream of new PS4 additions.
PlayStation Plus Essential: the online-play tier
Essential is the entry-level plan and the sensible choice for players who already buy the games they want. It includes online multiplayer for supported paid games, monthly games, cloud saves, Share Play, discounts, and exclusive content.
Essential does not include the current Game Catalog or Classics Catalog. It also does not include Premium’s game trials or cloud streaming.
Essential’s monthly games are not permanently free purchases. They remain playable only while the subscription is active and the service’s terms continue to apply. If your main question is “What is the cheapest way to play my purchased game online?” Essential is usually the answer.
PlayStation Plus Extra: the downloadable-library tier
Extra includes every Essential benefit plus the Game Catalog, which Sony describes as a library of hundreds of downloadable games with new titles added regularly. It also includes Ubisoft+ Classics.
Extra is the strongest default recommendation for players who want to try many games without buying each one individually and who do not need classic games, trials, or cloud streaming.
The trade-off is that the Game Catalog rotates. A game can leave even if you have downloaded it, and you need an active Extra or Premium membership to play catalog games. Extra works best when you treat the catalog like a scheduled lending library rather than a collection you own.
PlayStation Plus Premium: classics, trials, and streaming
Premium includes Essential and Extra benefits, then adds:

- Sony Pictures Catalog benefits; Sony’s current U.S. presentation also references movie-credit benefits.
The annual Premium price is $159.99, only $25 more than Extra’s $134.99 annual price. That relatively small difference can make Premium worthwhile for someone who will regularly use streaming, trials, or classics. It is poor value if you only want the downloadable Game Catalog and never use those additions.
How Premium cloud streaming works
Premium cloud streaming is available on supported PS4 and PS5 consoles and PC. Sony’s newer support documentation also describes cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal for eligible PS5 games. Availability depends on country, account age, device, and the individual game.

These figures describe minimum connection guidance, not a guarantee of perfect performance. Wi-Fi congestion, latency, network stability, queues, and household traffic can still affect the experience. Sony may place players in queues, and streaming is not guaranteed to be available for every catalog or Classics Catalog title.
Streaming also has functional limitations. Sony lists broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, PSVR, and mouse-and-keyboard support among functions that may not be available while a game is being streamed. Premium streaming is therefore best treated as a convenience feature for supported games, not a guaranteed replacement for downloading games or owning a console.
Using PlayStation Plus on PS5, PS4, PC, and Portal
PS5 and PS4
Essential benefits such as online play, monthly games, cloud saves, and Share Play apply across supported PlayStation consoles. Extra and Premium catalog games can be downloaded when the game and console support them.

If you intend to download PS5 games, you need a PlayStation 5 console. PlayStation Plus itself is a subscription, not a console. A PS4 can still be useful for supported PS4 games and benefits, but it does not turn PS5 games into PS4 games.
PC
Premium members can stream selected Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games to PC through Sony’s PlayStation Plus PC-streaming support. PC streaming has age and availability restrictions; Sony states that it requires an account belonging to someone aged 18 or older.
A PC user should not assume that Premium provides the same download library available on a PlayStation console. The relevant PC benefit is streaming selected titles, subject to the service’s device, country, account, and game restrictions.
PlayStation Portal
Cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal requires a Portal device, an active Premium membership, a PlayStation account, and a broadband connection. Sony says cloud streaming is not available for child accounts and advises users to check whether the feature is supported in their country.
Portal cloud streaming is for eligible PS5 games, not every game available through PlayStation Plus. It is also separate from Remote Play: the Portal’s cloud-streaming feature uses Premium and does not require the game to be installed on your PS5, while Remote Play has different requirements and may be unavailable during cloud streaming.
What equipment do you actually need?
You do not need special hardware just to buy PlayStation Plus. What you need depends on how you plan to use it:
- Playing on a console: A compatible PS4 or PS5, an internet connection for online features, and a controller.
- Downloading PS5 catalog games: A PS5 and enough local storage for the games you install.
- Streaming on PC: A supported PC, a Premium membership, an adult account, and a stable broadband connection.
- Streaming on Portal: PlayStation Portal, Premium, an eligible account, and a supported broadband connection.
How to choose the right tier

Avoid the catalog-value trap
Before upgrading for a particular game, ask three questions:
- Is the game included in the plan you are considering, rather than merely available for purchase in the PlayStation Store?
- Does it have a published removal date?
- Will you finish it before it leaves, or would buying it separately make more sense?
This matters especially for players who download large games but play only occasionally. A rotating catalog can be excellent value for active players and disappointing for someone who expects permanent access.

PlayStation Plus automatically renews unless you cancel it. Canceling stops future payments, but you generally keep the benefits until the end of the period you already paid for.
On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions. On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > PlayStation Subscriptions. Sony also provides cancellation through Account Management on the web.
Canceling does not automatically refund payments already made under Sony’s U.S. usage terms, subject to applicable purchase-cancellation rights and local law. Review the applicable terms if you are seeking a refund rather than simply stopping renewal.
What happens to add-ons and consumables?
If you bought add-ons, virtual currency, or other consumables for a game obtained through PlayStation Plus, those items can become unusable if the underlying game is no longer accessible because the membership expired or the game left the service. They become usable again if you renew the subscription or purchase the game separately, subject to Sony’s terms.
Buying PlayStation Plus as a gift
Before buying a PlayStation Plus voucher or gift card, verify the recipient’s country, account region, and current subscription tier. Voucher conversion rules can turn the voucher into a different number of subscription days depending on whether the recipient currently has Essential, Extra, or Premium.

Do not assume that a voucher purchased in one country will redeem on an account registered in another. Also check whether the recipient already has an active membership, because the resulting duration can differ from the face value you expected.
