The January 2026 PlayStation Plus Essential games were Need for Speed Unbound for PS5, plus Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper for PS5 and PS4. The offer ran from January 6 through February 2, 2026, and is no longer claimable. Reactions were mixed in coverage and online comments, with the sharpest criticism focused on Unbound having previously been part of PS Plus Extra.

When could subscribers claim them?
The monthly offer became available January 6, 2026, and the claim window ended February 2. These were the January Essential games, not a current offer; subscribers who did not add them to their library during that window cannot claim them as January’s monthly games now.

Why did the lineup divide players?
Some objected to seeing Need for Speed Unbound again
GamingBible reported that Unbound had previously been available in the PS Plus Extra catalog, joining it in February 2024 before leaving in August 2025. For subscribers who remembered that earlier access, its return as an Essential monthly game felt like a repeat rather than a fresh benefit. One anonymous comment reproduced by GamingBible put it bluntly: “Another year, another NFS game.”
Others welcomed the other games—or had not played these titles
Comments also praised or expressed interest in Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper. GamingBible quoted one anonymous commenter urging others to try Core Keeper: “Guys, PLEASE give Core Keeper a shot. It’s genuinely such a fun game.” Some subscribers also liked the lineup because they had not played the included games. These examples show different individual reactions, not how subscribers overall felt.

The cross-generation games prompted PS5-focused expectations
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper both had PS4 versions as well as PS5 versions. PlayStation LifeStyle reported that this surprised some members expecting a more PS5-focused monthly lineup. That was a reported expectation among some players, not an official explanation from Sony for choosing the games.
Taken together, the split reflects different ideas of value: a subscriber who had already accessed Unbound through Extra could see a repeat, while someone new to the games might welcome the racing title, Disney adventure, or sandbox survival game. No representative survey or named approval statistic establishes how widely either view was held.
