Choose PlayStation Plus Premium if your main goal is to try games through dedicated trials, stream supported titles, or play the Classics Catalog. Choose Extra if you mainly want to download games from the rotating Game Catalog and do not need Premium-only trials, streaming, or Classics.
Extra and Premium share the same Game Catalog, so Extra can still be an excellent way to sample many games. Premium’s advantage is a separate Game Trials benefit that lets you evaluate eligible games without relying on a catalog listing. Neither tier guarantees that every game has a trial, and availability depends on the title, country, plan and date.

The short answer: Premium is the better trial tier, but Extra may be better value
PlayStation Plus Premium is the clear choice when “trying games” means starting a formal trial of a game before deciding whether to buy it. Sony lists Game Trials as a Premium-only feature. Premium also adds cloud streaming and the Classics Catalog, which can give you more ways to sample games without committing to a purchase or a large download.
PlayStation Plus Extra is the better fit when you are happy to try games that are already included in the Game Catalog. You download an included title, play it while it remains in the catalog, and decide whether it is worth buying after it leaves or after you have finished evaluating it. Extra does not include the dedicated Game Trials feature.

The practical decision is therefore not “which tier has games?” Both have the Game Catalog. It is “do you need Premium’s trial system, streaming and Classics Catalog enough to pay for the higher tier?”
What Extra and Premium include
Both memberships include the benefits of PlayStation Plus Essential, including monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, Share Play, cloud storage and selected exclusive content. Extra adds the Game Catalog, while Premium includes the Game Catalog and then adds the features most relevant to game testing.

“Included” does not mean every game is permanently available. Sony can add or remove Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles, and the selection can differ by territory. Check the PlayStation Plus page for your country before subscribing.
How trying a game works on Premium
Dedicated Game Trials
Premium’s Game Trials are the only feature in these two tiers specifically designed as a try-before-you-buy program. An eligible game has a trial entry separate from the normal purchase listing. You start the trial through the PlayStation Store or the PlayStation Plus area, then play the available trial period under the conditions shown for that title.
Sony does not promise that every new release, every Game Catalog title or every game in the store has a trial. Trial eligibility, duration and regional availability are title-specific. Read the trial information on the game’s listing before starting it; do not assume that a Premium subscription makes the entire store playable as a trial.
What happens when the trial ends
A trial is an evaluation period, not a permanent license. If you decide to buy the game, use the purchase option shown in the Store. If you do not buy it, access ends when the trial allowance expires. Your saved data and trophies may remain on your account, but whether progress carries into a separately purchased copy can depend on the game and platform; confirm the title’s own information if preserving progress is important.
Premium trials and recurring billing
Sony’s terms state that trials roll into paid subscriptions and that subscription prices may change. Before confirming a trial or membership offer, read the checkout screen carefully for the renewal date, amount, billing frequency and cancellation instructions. A low-cost introductory offer should not be treated as a one-time purchase unless the checkout explicitly says so.

Download from the Game Catalog
Extra lets you sample games by downloading titles that are currently in the Game Catalog. This is often enough for players who want to test a broad range of games rather than evaluate a specific new release.

- Open the PlayStation Plus area on your PS4 or PS5 and choose the Game Catalog section. Store labels can vary slightly by country and console software version.
- Filter or search for the game you want to test. Check the game’s edition, platform and language information before downloading.
- Select Download or Add to Library when the title is included with Extra. If the page shows a purchase price instead, the game is not currently included for your account or region.
- Play while the membership and catalog access remain active. Catalog games can leave the service, and access also ends if the subscription expires.
- Buy the game if you want permanent access. A purchase is separate from the subscription license.
This approach has an important trade-off: you can play a catalog game for as long as it remains available, but you do not get a guaranteed, fixed trial window for a title that is absent from the catalog. Extra is therefore strongest for discovery within Sony’s rotating library, not for testing any game on demand.
Why Extra can still be sufficient
If the games you want to test are already in the Game Catalog, Extra provides the same downloadable access that Premium subscribers receive. Paying for Premium will not create a second, larger version of the Game Catalog. Premium’s additional value comes from trials, Classics and streaming.
Premium’s cloud streaming advantage
Cloud streaming can make Premium more convenient when you want to test a supported game without waiting for a full download or using local storage. Sony describes streaming as a Premium benefit on PS4 and PS5 consoles and on PC.

Connection requirements
- Minimum connection: at least 5 Mbps.
- For 1080p streaming: at least 15 Mbps.
- Actual quality depends on network stability, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions and the device being used.
The bandwidth figures are minimum requirements, not a promise of flawless play. A connection that technically meets 5 Mbps can still produce latency or image-quality problems if it is unstable or shared with other traffic.
What can be streamed
Streaming is limited to selected PS5 games, selected Game Catalog games, selected Classics Catalog games and selected free-to-play titles. Sony does not say that every Game Catalog or Store game is streamable. Look for the streaming option on the individual game page before relying on it as your way to try a title.
When streaming is useful
- Limited storage: You can evaluate a supported game without installing its full file.
- Short evaluation: Streaming is practical when you only need a brief first impression.
- PC access: Premium can provide a way to play selected console titles on a supported PC setup.
Streaming is less suitable for players with high latency, data caps, unreliable Wi-Fi or a preference for the lowest possible input delay. In those cases, downloading through Extra or Premium is usually the more predictable experience when the title is available locally.
Library breadth: Game Catalog versus Classics Catalog
The shared Game Catalog
Extra and Premium both include the Game Catalog, which Sony describes as a library of hundreds of games with regular additions. The exact list changes over time and is not identical in every country. A game’s presence today is not a promise that it will still be available when you subscribe later.
Because the catalogs rotate, make a shortlist before upgrading. Search for the games you actually intend to play, verify that the correct edition is included, and check whether any title is scheduled to leave. This prevents paying for Premium when the games you want are already available through Extra.

Premium’s Classics Catalog
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, which Extra does not include. This is the main library expansion beyond the shared Game Catalog. If older PlayStation titles are a significant part of what you want to explore, Premium can justify its additional cost even when you rarely use Game Trials.
Classics availability is still subject to territory, platform and catalog changes. Treat it as an additional selection, not a permanent archive of every older PlayStation release.

- You value the Classics Catalog enough to use it throughout the year.
Choose Extra when
- Your target games are already in the Game Catalog.
- You are comfortable downloading games and checking the catalog before you play.
- You do not need Classics or cloud streaming.
- You would rather avoid paying for a higher tier whose main additions you may not use.
Price, region and commitment considerations
Sony’s membership prices, taxes, promotions and catalog contents vary by country and can change. There is no single worldwide Extra-versus-Premium price that remains accurate for every reader. Use the PlayStation Store for your account’s country to compare the current monthly, three-month and annual options.

A useful way to compare value is to count the features you will actually use during the period you plan to subscribe:
- List the specific games you want to try.
- Mark which are in the Game Catalog, which have a Premium trial and which are available only for purchase.
- Decide whether you will use Classics or streaming.
- Compare the current regional prices, including the renewal price rather than only an introductory offer.
- Choose Extra unless Premium’s trials, Classics or streaming solve a real problem for you.

Assuming Premium trials cover every game

Fix: Check the individual listing before upgrading. Premium includes the feature, not a guarantee that every title participates.
Confusing catalog access with ownership
Problem: A downloaded Extra game stops launching after it leaves the catalog or after the membership expires.
Fix: Buy the game if you want uninterrupted access. Subscription downloads remain tied to the membership and catalog license.
Expecting every game to stream
Problem: A title appears in the catalog but has no streaming option.
Fix: Download it when supported, or verify whether it is one of the selected titles Sony allows to stream.
Overlooking renewal
Problem: A trial or discounted period turns into a full-price recurring subscription.
Fix: Record the renewal date, review the checkout terms and cancel through your account settings before renewal if you do not want another billing period.

Using a marginal internet connection for streaming
Problem: Streaming meets the nominal speed but feels delayed or unstable.

Fix: Use a wired connection or a less congested network where possible, pause competing downloads and switch to a local download when the game is available. The 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures are minimum thresholds, not latency guarantees.
Bottom line for game testers
Premium is worth choosing over Extra when dedicated Game Trials are the reason you are subscribing, or when you will also use cloud streaming and the Classics Catalog. It is the only one of the two tiers with Game Trials.
Extra is the rational choice for most players who simply want a large, changing selection of downloadable games. Start by checking whether the titles you want are already in the Game Catalog. If they are, Premium will not give you a different Game Catalog; it gives you additional ways to access and evaluate games.
