Sony’s PlayStation Portal cloud-streaming feature lets subscribers play select PS5 games without connecting to a PS5. The feature officially launched on November 5, 2025, and includes eligible digital PS5 purchases as well as selected PlayStation Plus catalog games. It requires PlayStation Plus Premium, a supported region and a reliable internet connection. Portal still cannot install or run PS5 games locally.
The short answer
- A PS5 is not required for supported Cloud Streaming games.
- PlayStation Plus Premium is required; Essential and Extra are not enough.
- Not every PS5 game is supported. Ownership of a digital game does not automatically make it streamable.
- Physical-disc ownership does not provide a cloud-streaming entitlement.
- Portal remains a streaming device, not a Switch- or Steam Deck-style handheld with local game installations.
The latest Portal system software listed by Sony is version 7.0.2 as of August 18, 2026. That is primarily a performance, stability, messaging and usability update; Cloud Streaming itself arrived earlier, with the full launch on November 5, 2025. See Sony’s Portal system software history.

What Sony added
Portal’s cloud functionality developed in stages. A beta first allowed select PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus catalog to be streamed without a PS5. The full launch added support for select digitally purchased PS5 games in a subscriber’s PlayStation Store library.
That distinction matters. Sony, not the fact that you own a game, determines whether a title is eligible. Supported availability can change by game, country, account, license and date.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player

- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Sony’s launch examples included Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V and Resident Evil 4. Catalog examples included Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. These are launch examples, not a permanent list. Check Sony’s live Cloud Streaming game finder before buying a game or subscribing.
Do you need a PS5?
Not for eligible Cloud Streaming games. The game runs on Sony’s servers, so you can play while your PS5 is switched off, unavailable or being used by another account.
You still need the Portal hardware, a PlayStation account, an eligible adult account, PlayStation Plus Premium and an internet connection. If you want to use Portal through Remote Play instead, a paired PS5 remains necessary.
| Use case | PS5 required? | PS Plus required? |
|---|---|---|
| Remote Play from your PS5 | Yes | No, unless the game itself requires online multiplayer |
| Cloud stream a supported PlayStation Plus catalog game | No | Premium |
| Cloud stream a supported purchased digital PS5 game | No | Premium |
| Cloud stream a physical-disc game you own | Not available as an ownership entitlement | Not applicable |
Cloud Streaming versus Remote Play
These are separate Portal experiences even though both deliver a game over the internet.
| Cloud Streaming | Remote Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Sony’s servers | Your paired PS5 |
| PS5 needed | No, for supported titles | Yes; it must be on or in Rest Mode |
| PS Plus | Premium required | Generally not required |
| Game selection | Supported digital purchases and selected PS Plus games | Compatible games installed on your PS5 |
| Best use | Playing when your PS5 is off or occupied | Accessing your own console’s broader installed library |
Remote Play can therefore remain the better option for a PS5 owner who wants to use Portal without adding another subscription. Its performance depends on both Portal’s connection and the PS5’s network connection. Sony describes Portal’s Remote Play features on its official product page.
What you need
PlayStation Plus Premium
Cloud Streaming on Portal requires PlayStation Plus Premium. Essential and Extra do not include this Portal cloud-streaming entitlement. Premium is recurring unless canceled, and the price can vary by region, plan duration, account and promotion, so check Sony’s current plan page rather than relying on an old price.

Premium may make sense if you will use Cloud Streaming, the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud saves. It is difficult to justify solely for Remote Play, which does not itself require PlayStation Plus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA supported account and region
You must be physically located in a country where the feature is available and use an account from an eligible region. Sony’s listed markets include the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and numerous European countries, but availability can change and may not extend to overseas territories.
Cloud Streaming is unavailable to child accounts. Game selection also varies by country, region, subscription plan, title and time.
Internet access
Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum to establish a streaming session and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Portal experience. Its broader cloud-streaming guidance lists recommended bandwidth of 13 Mbps for 720p, 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p and 52 Mbps for 2160p/4K.
Portal has a 1080p display, so the 1440p and 4K figures are not targets for its screen. More importantly, bandwidth alone does not determine responsiveness. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion and public-network sign-in requirements can cause delay or image breakup even on a fast connection.

- Update Portal to the latest available system software.
- Sign in to the account with the Premium subscription and game entitlement.
- Connect Portal to broadband Wi-Fi.
- From the home screen, choose Cloud Streaming.
- Select an eligible game from your library or the available catalog.
- Choose Stream or launch the game.
The redesigned home screen separates Remote Play, Cloud Streaming and Search. If a game belongs to a bundle, version 7.0.0 also allows you to select an individual game from that bundle.

Resolution, audio and other software features
Portal’s display is 8 inches at 1080p, and Sony lists support for up to 60 frames per second at 1080p. Version 7.0.0 added a selectable 1080p High Quality mode:
Quick menu → Max Resolution → 1080p High Quality
This setting does not guarantee 1080p or 60fps in every game or network condition. If stability is more important than image quality, lowering the resolution may help.

“I own the game, but Stream is missing”
Ownership is not enough. Confirm the title in Sony’s current Cloud Streaming game finder, then check these possibilities:
- You own only the PS4 version, not the eligible PS5 version.
- The title is not currently supported.
- You have Essential or Extra rather than Premium.
- The game belongs to another PlayStation account.
- Regional or licensing availability has changed.
- The game is part of a bundle and must be selected individually.
- Portal’s account session has not refreshed.
Update Portal, sign out and back in, and check the game’s PlayStation Store page. If the option is still absent, treat Sony’s game finder and support pages as authoritative; a digital purchase does not guarantee cloud access.

“Cloud Streaming is not showing”
Check your account country and physical location, confirm that the account is an adult account, verify Premium status and finish Portal’s initial setup. Also confirm that the device is online and refresh the account session after an update.

Remember that 5 Mbps is a minimum session threshold, not a promise of smooth play. Try a stable 5 GHz home network where available, move closer to the router, pause other downloads and uploads, and compare performance on another broadband network. Use Quick menu → Troubleshoot → Show Network Status. A faster internet package may not fix latency caused by Wi-Fi interference, routing or congestion.
Is PlayStation Portal worth it for cloud streaming?
For an existing PS5 owner
Portal is most attractive if you want a dedicated screen and DualSense-style controls while someone else uses the TV—or if you want to play while the PS5 is unavailable. Remote Play may already meet your needs without Premium. Cloud Streaming adds flexibility, but only for supported titles and at the cost of a recurring subscription.
For a Premium subscriber without a PS5
This is the clearest cloud-streaming use case. Portal can provide a simple PlayStation handheld experience without buying a PS5, provided your favorite games appear in Sony’s supported list and your network is reliable. It is still not an offline console.
For someone with mostly physical games
Portal is a poor match if your library is primarily on discs. Sony’s cloud entitlement is based on supported digital games and catalog access; Portal cannot use your physical-disc ownership as a cloud license.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For someone who wants local handheld gaming
Choose something else if you need offline play, local installations, PC games, emulation or multiple cloud services. A Steam Deck offers a broader PC ecosystem, while the Logitech G Cloud is designed around several cloud platforms. A Backbone One can turn an existing phone into a flexible streaming device. Those alternatives do not reproduce Portal’s dedicated PlayStation hardware and integrated interface exactly.
The verdict
Cloud Streaming makes PlayStation Portal substantially more useful, but it does not turn it into a standalone console. The right description is a dedicated PlayStation streaming handheld: it can now reach Sony’s servers without a PS5 for selected games, while Remote Play still connects to your own console.
Buy or use Portal for cloud streaming if you already value PlayStation’s ecosystem, have Premium or plan to use its wider benefits, and will play in places with dependable low-latency Wi-Fi. Skip it if you expect every owned PS5 game, physical-disc support, offline play or local game installations.
