PlayStation Portal: Current US Price, Availability, and What You Need to Know

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PlayStation Portal is no longer a pre-order product: it launched on November 15, 2023, and is now sold as a streaming handheld. In the US, Sony’s recommended retail price is $249.99, effective April 2, 2026. It streams games from a PS5 with Remote Play; select games can also be streamed from Sony’s servers with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Check PlayStation Direct or a retailer for live stock and sale pricing.

Is the PlayStation Portal still available to pre-order?

No. The pre-order period was in 2023. Sony announced the device that August, with pre-orders opening through PlayStation Direct in selected countries and other retailers from September 29. The Portal launched on November 15, 2023. Buyers should now check current product listings and stock rather than look for a pre-order window. Sony’s launch announcement records the original timing and price.

How much does the PS Portal cost in the US?

Sony’s US recommended retail price for the Portal is $249.99, effective April 2, 2026. That is higher than its original $199.99 launch price; the old figure is not the current MSRP. Retailers may set different prices or run sales, and a product listing does not guarantee the item is in stock. Sony’s 2026 price announcement gives the effective date.

What the PlayStation Portal actually does

The Portal is a dedicated streaming device, not a portable PS5 that installs and runs PS5 games locally. Its 8-inch LCD has a 1080p resolution and supports up to 60 frames per second. Integrated controls follow the DualSense layout, with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in games that support those features. Sony lists a USB cable and manual in the standard box; a charger, PS5 console and games are not included. See the official product listing for hardware details.

Remote Play: stream from your own PS5

Remote Play sends a game running on your PS5 to the Portal over a network. Your console must be set up and connected to broadband, and the compatible game must be installed on it. The PS5 can be on or, with the relevant Rest Mode settings enabled, available to wake remotely. This is the main use case for owners who want to play while someone else uses the TV.

Cloud streaming: stream selected games from Sony

Since November 2025, the Portal can also cloud-stream selected PS5 games without using a PS5 console. This is a separate service from Remote Play: it requires an active PS Plus Premium subscription, an adult PlayStation account, a supported region and a suitable connection. The eligible selection includes certain catalog titles and certain digital PS5 games in a player’s library, not every game they own. Sony announced the feature’s arrival in its cloud-streaming launch post.

What do you need to use it?

  • For Remote Play: a PS5, a PlayStation Network account, a compatible game installed on the console, and Wi-Fi or other broadband access for the Portal. PS Plus Premium is not required for Remote Play.
  • For cloud streaming: an active PS Plus Premium membership, an adult account, a supported country or region, current Portal software, and broadband Wi-Fi. A PS5 is not required for this mode.
  • For either mode: a network with enough capacity and low enough latency for responsive play. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection requirement for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. For Portal cloud streaming, Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p.

Those bandwidth figures are thresholds, not guarantees of smooth gameplay. Latency, jitter, Wi-Fi congestion, router placement and—when using Remote Play—the upload quality of the PS5’s network also matter. A fast broadband plan cannot compensate for a weak Wi-Fi link or a congested route.

The Portal has no cellular modem, so using it away from home still requires Wi-Fi access. Hotel and public networks may require a sign-in page or block connections; a mobile hotspot may work but depends on signal quality and data limits. Sony’s current cloud-streaming support page lists connection, account and regional requirements.

How to set up Remote Play

  1. On the PS5, sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use on the Portal.
  2. In the PS5 settings, enable Remote Play. If you want to connect while the console is in Rest Mode, enable the Rest Mode options that keep it connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on over the network.
  3. Install the latest available system software on both the PS5 and Portal. Sony’s software page lists version 6.0.1 and its update history, but update availability can vary; use the latest version offered on your device. See Portal system software information.
  4. On the Portal, sign in to the same PlayStation account and follow the pairing prompt.
  5. Select your PS5 from the Portal home screen and start a compatible game.

If the stream is unstable, try connecting the PS5 to the router with Ethernet, moving the Portal closer to the Wi-Fi access point, reducing other network traffic or testing another Wi-Fi band. These steps address common network bottlenecks; they cannot remove latency imposed by a distant or congested network path.

  2. Sign in with an adult PlayStation account that has an active PS Plus Premium membership.
  3. Connect the Portal to broadband Wi-Fi in a supported region.
  4. Open the cloud-streaming area in the Portal interface and choose an eligible Game Catalog, Classics Catalog or library title.

If the cloud-streaming option or a game is unavailable, check the account’s age status and region, Premium membership, title eligibility, software version and connection. Sony says cloud streaming is not available to child accounts. Its cloud-streaming overview explains the service and catalog requirements.

Which games work on the Portal?

Remote Play compatibility

Remote Play generally works with compatible PS5 games installed on the paired console, including many PS4 games playable on PS5. Games that require PlayStation VR or PS VR2 are not compatible with the Portal, and titles needing additional peripherals may not work. Individual game features can also affect controls or playability.

Cloud-streaming compatibility

Cloud streaming is limited to selected PS5 games. Some titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog and some eligible digital PS5 games in a player’s library can be available, but owning a digital game does not automatically make it streamable. The list can vary by region and change over time; check the Portal’s Cloud Streaming section or Sony’s game finder before subscribing for a particular title. Portal cloud streaming currently does not support PS4 or PS3 games, according to Sony’s support materials.

Is the PS Portal worth buying in 2026?

It makes sense if…

  • You already own a PS5 and want a dedicated second screen when the TV is occupied.
  • You value integrated DualSense-style controls and supported haptics in a handheld format.
  • You usually play at home or can rely on stable Wi-Fi when travelling.
  • You already subscribe to Premium and want the additional option of streaming selected games.
  • You prefer a focused PlayStation device to configuring a general-purpose handheld.

Look elsewhere if…

  • You want to play offline or install games locally.
  • You lack a PS5 and do not want to pay for an ongoing Premium subscription for cloud streaming.
  • Your Wi-Fi is unreliable, or you need cellular connectivity.
  • You want PC, Xbox, emulation or Nintendo games, or expect the full PS5 library to be available through cloud streaming.
  • You depend on a particular wireless headset: do not assume a Bluetooth headset will pair directly. Sony highlights PlayStation Link audio products, so check compatibility before buying accessories.

For a cloud-only setup, account for both the $249.99 hardware MSRP and the recurring Premium subscription. For a PS5 owner using Remote Play, Premium is optional unless they also want cloud streaming; the right PlayStation Plus plan depends on their other needs.

Alternatives to consider

Device How it differs Best suited to
Phone plus Backbone One Uses a compatible phone and controller for a compact setup; the screen and controls are smaller, it shares the phone’s battery, and it lacks Portal-style integrated DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. Occasional Remote Play or cloud gaming when you already own a suitable phone. Backbone One
Logitech G Cloud An Android cloud-focused handheld with support for multiple streaming ecosystems and apps; verify current app support and pricing. People seeking a broader cloud-gaming device rather than a PlayStation-specific appliance. Logitech G Cloud
Steam Deck Runs locally installed PC games and offers broader software flexibility, but requires more setup; PlayStation Remote Play generally needs an app or workaround. People who prioritize offline PC gaming and flexibility. Steam Deck
Windows gaming handheld Offers native Windows gaming and PC storefront access, with more setup complexity and variable battery life. People who want local PC games and flexibility. See ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go.
Nintendo Switch Lite A native handheld option for Nintendo games and offline play rather than PlayStation streaming. People whose priority is a dedicated Nintendo library and local handheld gaming.
