PlayStation Portal FAQ: Games, Internet Requirements, and Offline Play

PlayStation Portal streams games rather than running them locally. Here’s how Remote Play and cloud streaming differ, what internet they need, and why Portal cannot play offline.

PlayStation Portal cannot play games offline. It streams compatible games from a PS5 using Remote Play, or streams select PS5 games from Sony’s cloud service. Both modes need broadband Wi-Fi. Remote Play requires a PS5; Portal cloud streaming does not, but requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited by game, account, and regional eligibility.

How PlayStation Portal plays games

Portal is a streaming remote player, not a standalone handheld that runs games locally. Its two play modes differ in where the game runs and which games are available.

Mode Where the game runs What you need Eligible games
Remote Play Your PS5 Portal on Wi-Fi; a PS5 connected to broadband, powered on or in Rest Mode, paired with Portal; Remote Play enabled; and the same PlayStation account on both devices. Compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on that PS5. Some games are excluded.
Cloud Streaming Sony’s cloud service Portal, a PlayStation account, broadband Wi-Fi, an active PS Plus Premium membership, an adult account, and a supported country or region. Select PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital PS5 games in Your Library.

For current cloud-game and regional eligibility, check Sony’s Portal cloud-streaming support page and cloud streaming and Remote Play overview. The selection can change.

Does PlayStation Portal need a PS5?

A PS5 is required for Remote Play, because the console runs the game and sends its video and audio to Portal. Portal cloud streaming can work without a PS5, provided the account and game meet Sony’s eligibility requirements and the user has PS Plus Premium.

Does Portal need internet, and what speed is required?

Yes. Both modes stream gameplay over broadband Wi-Fi. Sony’s US product FAQ specifies at least 5 Mbps for Portal use and recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These are Sony’s connection guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: actual quality can vary with the network environment and game. See Sony’s Portal product page and FAQ.

Cloud Streaming has separate speed thresholds. Sony’s cloud-streaming support page specifies 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Resolution adjusts to connection quality; after changing the maximum resolution, Sony says to restart the streaming game. These figures are published requirements, not independent performance tests. See Sony’s cloud-streaming support page.

Improve a Remote Play connection

  • Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet where possible.
  • Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for Portal where possible.
  • If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, connect Portal and PS5 to the same Wi-Fi network when possible.

Sony’s setup guidance is on its Remote Play setup page.

Can you play games offline on Portal?

No. Portal’s documented play modes stream from either a PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers, and both need broadband Wi-Fi. Even if a game can run offline on the PS5, Portal still needs a connection to receive the stream. Sony’s product and support pages do not document downloading games to Portal for local play.

Which games work on Portal?

Remote Play: compatible games installed on PS5

Remote Play supports compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on the connected PS5. It does not connect to a PS4 console. That does not prevent playing compatible PS4 games: they can be streamed from a PS5. Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR or PS VR2, games that rely on unsupported peripherals, and games that must be streamed on PS5 through PS Plus Premium. PS5 Media-tab apps are not supported through Remote Play. See Sony’s Portal compatibility page and Portal FAQ.

Cloud Streaming: select PS5 games

Cloud Streaming is limited to eligible PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, and select digital PS5 games in Your Library. Sony says PS3 and PS4 games are not available in Portal cloud streaming. Eligibility can vary by country or region and over time, so consult Sony’s current cloud-streaming information.

Do you need PS Plus?

PS Plus is not required for Portal Remote Play itself. Sony’s FAQ states that Remote Play does not require a PlayStation Plus membership; however, a game’s online multiplayer may have its own PS Plus requirement. Cloud Streaming is different: it requires an active PS Plus Premium membership, and Sony limits the feature to adult accounts in supported countries or regions. Check Sony’s Portal FAQ and cloud-streaming support page.

Set up Remote Play on Portal

  1. Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in to the same PlayStation account you use on Portal.
  2. Update the PS5 system software. On the console, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. If you want Portal to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  4. Leave the PS5 powered on or in Rest Mode. For a more reliable connection, use Ethernet for the PS5 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal where possible.
  5. Test the connection near the PS5 before relying on Remote Play away from home.

For Sony’s official walkthrough, see its Portal Remote Play setup instructions.

Can you use Portal away from home or on public Wi-Fi?

Yes, Remote Play can connect over the internet when you are away from home, as long as the PS5 is online and configured for Remote Play. Sony says Portal can connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks. On system software version 3.0.1 or later, some networks that require additional validation are supported; completing validation requires a smartphone or tablet. Initial Portal setup must first be completed on home Wi-Fi. Public network quality may vary and affect play.

Do you need headphones or other accessories?

No audio accessory is required. Portal has built-in speakers and supports wired headsets or earbuds with a 3.5 mm audio jack, as well as wireless PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. See Sony’s compatibility information and product FAQ.
