For Valve’s current rechargeable Steam Controller, the magnetic Steam Controller Puck is more convenient if you keep the controller near a regular charging spot: docking it makes charging part of putting it away, and the Puck also serves as the wireless transmitter. USB-C is more convenient when you want to charge at a desk or on the go without returning the controller to a fixed dock. Valve supports both methods for routine charging; it has not published a direct comparison of charging speed or convenience.
First, check which Steam Controller you have
This comparison is for Valve’s current rechargeable Steam Controller, which has an 8.39 Wh lithium-ion battery, a USB-C connector and a Steam Controller Puck charging interface, according to Valve’s product page. The 2015 Steam Controller is a different device: Valve’s legacy listing specifies two AA batteries and Micro USB. Do not apply the current model’s Puck or battery details to that older controller. When the Puck is the more convenient choice
Choose the Puck if the controller usually lives in one place and you want to put it down to charge without handling a cable. Its magnetic connection gives docking a straightforward routine, and it doubles as the wireless transmitter. The Puck is described by Valve as packaged with the current controller, rather than as a separate accessory needed for ordinary charging.

Valve also explains that the Puck will separate from the controller if pulled hard enough, helping reduce the risk of a trip or of the controller being pulled off a surface. When USB-C is the more convenient choice
Use USB-C if a cable is already within reach, you want a direct wired connection, or you do not want to return the controller to a fixed dock. A cable can also be easier to pack than the dedicated Puck if you already carry one, though that is a practical convenience rather than a claim by Valve. Valve identifies the connector as USB-C but does not state a required cable length, charging wattage or speed on its product page.
Can you leave the controller charging?
Yes. Valve’s Steam Controller troubleshooting guide states: “The Steam Controller was designed to be left charging with either Puck or USB-C whenever it’s not being used.” Valve adds that charging behavior is managed in firmware and optimized for long-term battery health. Does one method charge faster?
Valve does not publish a comparative charging-time figure for the Puck and USB-C in the product and support materials cited here, so there is no basis for saying one is faster. The product page lists 35+ hours of gameplay as a battery-life specification and notes that tracked gameplay with Steam Frame reduces battery life; that figure is not a charge-time comparison.

- The Puck and controller each contain magnets. Before connecting them, make sure they are free of metallic objects.
- Do not prevent the Puck from separating, and do not use damaged cables or components.
