A March 27, 2026 report by TechRadar said Sony had announced global price changes effective April 2, 2026. The Portal figures in that report were for the United States and United Kingdom, not Canada, so they do not establish a Canadian price. TechRadar’s report quotes Sony Interactive Entertainment VP of Global Marketing Isabelle Tomatis discussing the announced changes; her comment is not a Canadian price quote.
What is PlayStation Portal?
PlayStation Portal is a dedicated remote player for PS5 games, not a standalone console. Its original Remote Play feature streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 to the device over Wi-Fi. Sony describes it as having an 8-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen, and it incorporates DualSense features: haptic feedback and adaptive triggers work in supported games. Sony’s June 18, 2024 announcement describes those features.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Do you need a PS5 to use PlayStation Portal?
For Remote Play, yes. The Portal connects to a paired PS5, which must be set up and online, and either powered on or in Rest Mode. The game must be compatible and installed on that console. GameStop Canada’s listing gives 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience; actual play quality depends on network conditions. See the retailer’s listing.
Can PlayStation Portal stream games without a PS5?
It can, using a separate Cloud Streaming feature introduced after the device launched. Sony announced that Cloud Streaming officially arrived on PlayStation Portal on November 5, 2025. Eligible PlayStation Plus Premium members can stream select digital PS5 games from their own library and compatible games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog without connecting to their own PS5 for that stream. Sony included Canada among the supported regions for the updated interface in that announcement. The catalogue and eligibility can change; consult Sony’s Cloud Streaming announcement for feature details and current links to game and subscription information.

Sony says a PlayStation Plus membership is not required for Remote Play. The Premium membership requirement applies to the Cloud Streaming feature described above, not to Remote Play. Check Sony’s current membership terms and supported-game information because availability can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the hardware and charging details?
Sony’s PlayStation Portal manual lists Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, a USB port, a headset jack, and a built-in lithium-ion battery, in addition to the 8-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen. It says a USB-C USB PD adapter with at least 5 V/3 A output can charge the device. An extra adapter is only relevant if you need another charging setup; it is not a prerequisite for using the Portal.

Sony reported in June 2024 that “over 60 percent of PS Portal owners” used Remote Play for the first time, attributing the statement to Hiromi Wakai, VP of Product Management at Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony’s footnote says the figure came from internal data spanning November 2020 to April 2024; it is company-reported data, not a survey limited to Portal owners after the device’s November 2023 launch.
