PlayStation Portal launched in November 2023 as Sony’s first dedicated PlayStation remote player. It is a screen and controller that streams games; it is not a standalone console that runs games locally. Today, it offers two ways to play: Remote Play from a paired PS5, and cloud streaming of selected PS5 games with PlayStation Plus Premium.

What is PlayStation Portal?

PlayStation Portal Remote Player is a handheld device built for streaming PlayStation games over Wi-Fi. Sony specifies an 8-inch LCD with a 1080p resolution and support for up to 60 frames per second. Because games are streamed rather than run on the Portal itself, the experience depends on the network connection and on which play method and game you use.

Sony’s US product page currently lists availability from $249. Price and availability can vary by market and change over time. See Sony’s US PlayStation Portal product page for current details.

How the two ways to play differ

What to compare Remote Play Cloud streaming
Where the game runs On a paired PS5, which streams a compatible installed game to Portal. On Sony’s streaming service for an eligible PS5 title.
Does it require a PS5? Yes. The console must be connected to broadband and powered on or in Rest Mode. No, not for an eligible cloud-streamed game. The PS5 can be off or in use by another account.
Does it require PS Plus? Remote Play itself does not require PS Plus. A game may have its own online multiplayer requirement. Yes. An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required.
Which games are available? Compatible games installed on the paired PS5. Games requiring a VR headset or additional peripherals may not work. Selected PS5 games, including eligible titles from the PlayStation Plus catalogs and selected digital PS5 games in your library. Eligibility varies by game, region, and time; PS4 and PS3 games cannot be played through Portal cloud streaming.
Published network thresholds Sony’s US product FAQ says 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps minimum for 720p, and 13 Mbps minimum for 1080p.

Remote Play: stream from your own PS5

Remote Play is the option to use when the game is installed on your PS5 and you want to play it on Portal. You need a PS5 and a PlayStation account, and you must pair the Portal with the console. Your PS5 must be connected to broadband and either on or in Rest Mode so it can provide the stream. Remote Play does not itself require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

PS Portal + Case + Charging Station
  • Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
  • Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
  • Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
  • Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
  • Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console

You can use Remote Play away from home if the Portal and PS5 can reach a suitable internet connection. It is not a way to play without the console: the PS5 remains the source of the game. Sony recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience, while stating 5 Mbps as the minimum in its US product FAQ. Those speed thresholds do not guarantee low latency or a particular image quality; performance varies with the game and network environment.

Cloud streaming: play eligible games without the console

Sony officially launched cloud streaming on Portal on November 5, 2025, after an earlier beta. It lets Premium members stream selected PS5 games without requiring their PS5 to be available. Eligible games include selected digital PS5 games from a player’s library as well as games in the PlayStation Plus Game and Classics Catalogs. It does not make every purchased game streamable, and Portal cloud streaming does not support PS4 or PS3 games.

Cloud streaming requires an adult PlayStation account, an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, an eligible game, and a supported country. Sony’s current support page lists Canada, the United States, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Sony excludes overseas territories. Country and game eligibility can change; check Sony’s Portal cloud-streaming support page for current restrictions and the eligible-game information.

Resolution and network needs

Sony says cloud-streaming resolution adjusts automatically to connection quality. The currently listed choices are 720p and 1080p: Sony specifies 7 Mbps minimum for 720p, 13 Mbps minimum for 1080p, and 5 Mbps to establish a session. Meeting a threshold is not a promise of stable performance or a specific latency.

A March 17, 2026 software update added a 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and cloud streaming. Sony says it uses a higher bitrate than the default 1080p Standard mode. The same update included changes to game search and bundle selection, invitations, trophy notifications, and QR-code onboarding. Sony’s March 2026 update announcement describes the changes; consult the system software update history for later release details.

Features unavailable during cloud sessions

Some system-level PlayStation features are unavailable while cloud streaming, including system group or party invitations, system voice chat and messaging, friend management, trophy-earning previews, broadcasting, Share Screen and Share Play, Game Help, and challenges. Game-provided chat or messaging may still work, and Sony notes that the PS App can provide some social features.

Using Portal outside your home

Both play methods need a suitable internet connection, so being away from home does not remove the network requirement. Public Wi-Fi can work, but Sony cautions that its quality may be outside your control. Complete initial setup on your home Wi-Fi before trying public networks that require extra validation; some such networks need a phone or tablet to complete the connection. Cloud streaming also depends on being in a supported country and having an eligible title and Premium membership.

Screen, controls, and audio

Portal combines its 8-inch, 1080p LCD with PlayStation controls in a handheld format. Sony specifies up to 60fps capability; actual streaming performance depends on the game and connection. Audio options include the built-in speakers, wired headphones connected through the 3.5 mm jack, and compatible PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. Those accessories are optional.

What changed after launch?

Portal launched in November 2023 with Remote Play as its core use: streaming compatible games from a paired PS5. Cloud streaming arrived officially in November 2025, extending play to selected cloud-eligible PS5 titles without requiring the console to be on or available. The March 2026 update added the 1080p High Quality option and refinements to several interface and social features.

Sony reported that Portal cloud-streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year in January, based on its stated December 2025-to-January 2026 data window. Sony also said more than 50% of Portal users were PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers over that period. These are company-reported engagement figures, not independent market measurements. Sony’s November 2025 cloud-streaming announcement explains the feature’s launch and library support.
