In a 2026 comparison of 19 popular PlayStation games, discounted PlayStation Store copies were cheapest for 10 games, used discs were cheapest for seven, and two were approximately tied. The Store’s normal, non-sale price was the most expensive option for 15 of the 19 games. In practice, digital wins when you can wait for a sale; a disc can cost less when you buy pre-owned, need the game immediately, or plan to resell it.
The short answer: compare the price you will actually pay
The cheapest format depends on a specific game, edition, country, timing and your hardware. A digital copy at a PlayStation Store sale price can undercut both new and used discs. The same game at its regular Store price can be substantially more expensive than a pre-owned disc. A disc also has potential resale value, while a digital license normally does not.

That makes “digital versus physical” the wrong comparison by itself. Compare the same edition and included content, then account for delivery, tax, waiting time, resale and any disc-drive cost. A useful calculation is:
- Digital net cost: the matching PlayStation Store price you can buy now, or the sale price if waiting is acceptable.
- Disc net cost: the matching new or used disc price plus delivery and tax, plus any required disc-drive purchase, minus realistic resale proceeds.
If you already own a console with a working disc drive, its original purchase price is a sunk cost and should not be added again. If you own a disc-free console, include a compatible drive only when you actually need one; the drive’s model support and local price must be verified for your particular console.

What the 2026 price comparison found
Ars Technica’s 2026 analysis compared 19 current top-selling PlayStation games. It checked matching digital and physical editions, using PlayStation Store prices, Amazon new-disc listings, GameStop pre-owned listings and completed eBay sales including shipping. For some titles, the comparison adjusted for downloadable content and PS4-to-PS5 upgrade costs so that unlike packages were not treated as equivalent.

The sample is evidence about those 19 games, not a permanent price list or a census of every PlayStation release. Its physical prices came from US retailers and marketplaces, so the ordering can change in another country or at another time.
Why digital and disc prices diverge
Digital has one regular price but many sale windows
The Store’s regular price is stable until Sony changes it, but sales periodically reduce individual games or whole catalogues. In the Ars sample, the lowest Store discounts appeared between 13% and 33% of the time, depending on the game. That is a historical observation about the titles studied, not a promise that a particular game will be discounted on a schedule.

Used discs create a second-hand market
Once a disc has circulated, its price is set by supply, demand, condition and the seller’s policy rather than by the Store’s digital list price. Popular games with many copies in circulation often become inexpensive pre-owned purchases. Scarce, recently released or highly sought-after games may remain expensive.
When checking a used listing, match the game’s edition, region where relevant, included inserts or codes, disc condition, delivery charge and return policy. A low headline price is not the low net cost if shipping is high or the disc cannot be returned when it fails to install.
Resale changes the disc’s effective cost
A physical buyer can sell the disc after finishing it. The proceeds depend on demand, condition, timing, marketplace fees, postage and how quickly you are willing to accept a lower offer. There is no universal resale percentage, so use a conservative estimate based on completed local sales rather than an optimistic listing price.
For example, a disc bought for $60 and later sold for $35 has a $25 pre-fee difference, but postage and marketplace fees reduce that amount. A digital purchase has no comparable resale proceeds. Conversely, keeping a disc lets you replay or lend it without buying another license, while a digital license is tied to the purchasing account and platform rules.

How to compare one game correctly
- Identify the exact product. Write down the platform (PS4 or PS5), edition, region, included DLC, bonus items and whether a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade is included. Do not compare a standard disc with a digital deluxe bundle.
- Record the Store price today. Note the normal price and any current sale price, plus the sale’s end date if shown. If the game is discounted only for a limited event, label that price as temporary.
- Check a new disc. Include the delivered price, taxes and the retailer’s return terms. A local store may be cheaper than a shipped listing once delivery is included.
- Check a pre-owned disc. Confirm condition, seller rating, included codes and whether the listing is for the same edition. Add shipping and any protection or restocking fee.
- Decide whether waiting is acceptable. If you need to play tonight, a hypothetical future sale is not your available price. If you can wait, record the current price as a choice rather than a guaranteed saving.
- Estimate resale conservatively. Look at completed sales for the same edition in your market. Subtract selling fees, packaging and postage, and assume the value may fall before you finish the game.
- Add only incremental hardware. A disc-free console requires a compatible drive to read discs. Verify compatibility and the current local price; do not add a drive when your console already has one.
- Choose the lower net cost that meets your constraints. If the totals are close, convenience, access and return rights can reasonably decide the purchase.
A practical worksheet
Use one line for each format and keep all figures in your local currency:

Subtract resale proceeds from the delivered disc total. Compare that result with the digital checkout total, not with a headline price. Keep a note of the date because prices, stock and sale status change.
When each format is usually the better financial choice
Choose digital when the Store sale is lower
Digital is often the economical choice when a matching sale price undercuts available discs and you want the game without shipping or a trip to a store. It is also practical when you share a console household and want to switch games without changing discs. The saving is real only if the sale price is available in your account’s region and includes the same content as the disc.
Choose a used disc when you want the lowest immediate price
Pre-owned is the strongest candidate when a local listing is cheaper than the current Store price and you want to play now. It can remain cheaper even while the digital version is discounted; seven games in the 19-title Ars sample fell into that category. Inspect the return policy and disc condition before treating the sticker price as a saving.

Choose a new disc when resale matters
A new disc can have a higher upfront price but a lower net cost if you sell it soon after finishing. This is most useful for short single-player games or releases with strong early demand. The calculation is less favorable if you keep games permanently, rarely sell, or face high marketplace and postage costs.
Choose the format that matches your hardware
Disc ownership is unavailable on a disc-free console unless a compatible drive is added. That hardware can erase a disc’s apparent saving. Conversely, a buyer who already owns a disc-capable console can use used and new discs without an additional format cost.

Prices vary by country, currency, taxes, retailer competition and account region. PSPrices reported tracking 67 PlayStation Store regions and 11,797 games on a page updated October 13, 2026. That scope demonstrates broad regional variation, but it is a third-party tracker’s coverage, not an official Sony statistic and not evidence that a buyer can lawfully shop every region.
Use your own Store region and local retailers for the worksheet. Do not convert a US price directly into another currency and assume the ranking remains the same. Importing a disc can add delivery, tax, language or account-compatibility complications that erase a nominal discount.

Refunds, returns and buying risk
PlayStation Store purchases in the United States
Sony’s US support guidance generally allows a refund request for a full game or DLC within 14 days, provided the content has not been downloaded or streamed, unless the content is faulty. Starting a download or streaming session can therefore remove the ordinary eligibility route. Check the current support terms for your country before purchase because policies and legal rights differ.
Physical purchases
PlayStation Direct’s US physical-goods policy says opened or unsealed physical disc games are not refundable under that policy unless the product is faulty, covered by a warranty claim or a legal right applies. PlayStation Direct’s rules do not govern another retailer’s sale. A store or marketplace may provide different returns, and local consumer law can add protections.
For a used disc, a seller’s tested-working guarantee can be more valuable than a small price difference. Keep the packaging and proof of purchase until the game installs and runs.

What Sony’s planned 2028 change means
In a July 1, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Director Sid Shuman wrote: “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony said games already released, and games releasing before January 2028 in disc format, are unaffected. It also said new games after the change will be offered digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers.
Sony added that it would continue to provide choices about where players purchase new games, including retailers and PlayStation Store. That is Sony’s stated plan, not proof that digital prices will fall, rise or remain unchanged. Existing discs and the used market do not disappear on the announcement date, but the supply of new discs for post-January-2028 releases is expected to change if the plan proceeds.
For a buyer deciding today, the announcement is mainly an availability consideration. It does not establish a future sale calendar or a guaranteed price advantage for digital purchases. Keep comparing the actual checkout totals for each game.
Common mistakes that produce a false “cheapest” answer
- Comparing different editions: A deluxe digital bundle may include an expansion that a standard disc lacks.
- Ignoring upgrades: A cheaper PS4 disc may require a paid PS5 upgrade, while a digital listing may include it.
- Using a listing instead of a completed sale: An unsold asking price is not evidence of resale proceeds.
- Leaving out delivery and tax: These charges can reverse a small price difference.
- Assuming every sale repeats: The 13–33% sale-frequency observation applies to the sampled games and period, not to future discounts.
- Adding a disc drive twice: Include the hardware only when buying it is necessary; do not count a cost you already paid.
- Overlooking condition and codes: Used discs may lack one-time bonus codes or have damage that affects installation or resale.
- Generalizing from one country: US marketplace results cannot settle the price in another region.
A decision rule you can use in two minutes
- Find the exact digital, new-disc and used-disc listings for the same edition.
- Write down delivered totals, not headline prices.
- Subtract a realistic, fee-adjusted resale estimate from the disc total if you will sell.
- Add a compatible disc-drive price only if your console needs one.
- If digital is cheaper today, buy digital unless you specifically value resale or ownership of a disc.
- If a disc is cheaper today and you want to play immediately, buy the disc after checking condition and returns.
- If digital is cheaper only at a future sale, decide whether the saving justifies waiting; do not treat the future discount as guaranteed.
Verdict
Over time, digital is cheapest for buyers who wait for PlayStation Store sales and are satisfied with a non-resellable license. Physical is cheapest for buyers who shop pre-owned, need the game immediately at a competitive local price, or sell the disc after playing. The 2026 19-game comparison supports both outcomes: sale digital led 10 times, used discs led seven times, and two were approximately tied, while regular Store pricing led to the highest cost for 15 games. The only reliable way to know which is cheaper for your purchase is to compare the same edition in your market and include every cost that applies to you.
