Sony says physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will stop starting in January 2028. That is a change to how new games are distributed—not an announcement that the PS5 is being discontinued or that a PS6 is coming on a particular date.
What Sony announced
In a July 1, 2026 post, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, wrote: “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony’s announcement sets a cutoff for new-game disc production; it does not say PlayStation consoles or games themselves are ending.
Sony also said the transition “has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.” Those releases are outside the announced cutoff.
What changes for buying games
From January 2028, Sony says new PlayStation games will remain available through PlayStation Store and retailers, but in digital formats only. A game being offered by a retailer after the cutoff does not mean it will come on a physical disc. Sony has not specified whether those retail digital offerings will be boxed codes, cards, or another format; Axios reported that this detail was unclear when the policy was announced.

Can you still buy PS5 games on disc, and will existing discs work?
Yes, the announcement does not end disc releases before January 2028. Sony explicitly says games already released or releasing before that date in disc format are unaffected. It does not require owners of existing discs to buy a different console, and it does not announce a change to the status of games they already own.
A disc-capable PS5 matters if you want to play physical releases. If you buy and play digitally, this particular policy gives you no disc-related reason to choose a disc-capable model. Sony’s announcement does not say all PS5 owners need an upgrade.

Does this mean PS6 is coming soon?
No PS6 launch date or hardware configuration was announced alongside the disc-production policy. Game File’s July 1, 2026 reporting likewise noted that Sony did not disclose PS6 timing or disc-drive configuration. The disc cutoff is not evidence that the PS5 generation is ending on a specific schedule.
Sony’s 2024 Corporate Report described the PS5 as entering the second half of its console cycle and highlighted network services and add-on content as recurring revenue sources. That is dated company context, not a PS6 timetable or proof that the PS5 is ending in 2026.

What the shift means for physical-game buyers
The announced policy makes the key choice one of format preference. Discs allow buyers to keep a physical copy and, where available, to lend, resell, or collect it; digital purchases avoid handling discs and can be bought through online storefronts. Sony’s policy fixes the format for new releases from January 2028, but does not settle retail packaging after that cutoff or the disc-drive design of future consoles.
