The error “The program can’t start because plclient_kompas.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” identifies a missing KOMPAS-3D component, not a missing Windows file. plclient_kompas.dll belongs to ASCON KOMPAS-3D Standard Parts, also known as the PartLib integration.

Which fix applies to you

Use this order:

  • KOMPAS-3D or Standard Parts stopped working after an update, repair, or crash: run the KOMPAS Installation Tool and choose Restore Now.
  • Standard Parts was never installed: use Edit in the installation tool and add the relevant component.
  • The DLL exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: check dependent DLLs, architecture, and antivirus quarantine.
  • The problem began after installing another KOMPAS release: remove stray copies and repair the release that launches the failing application.
  • The error appears in Excel, VBA, or a custom .NET program: investigate the integration code and x86/x64 compatibility.
  • Several Windows applications also fail: use DISM and SFC only after repairing KOMPAS-3D.

Do not begin by copying a DLL into System32, running registry cleaners, or downloading an isolated copy.

What plclient_kompas.dll does

KOMPAS-3D uses this library for Standard Parts operations. Its exported functions include PLInsert2D and PLInsert3D, which integrations can use to insert standard mechanical parts into KOMPAS assemblies.

The file is normally inside the ASCON or KOMPAS installation tree, often in a location resembling:

Other releases may use a path containing:

LibsPartLibClients

The exact location depends on the KOMPAS release, installation choices, and application architecture. It is not a Windows component, and there is no reason to place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Restore KOMPAS-3D files

This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged file.

On KOMPAS-3D v24

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Expand the KOMPAS-3D v24 x64 program group.
  3. Open KOMPAS Installation Tool.
  4. Select Restore Now.
  5. Choose Execute.
  6. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  7. Launch KOMPAS-3D and open the Standard Parts function again.

The restore operation is intended to replace missing or damaged KOMPAS files and shortcuts. If the error disappears, leave the repaired DLL in the KOMPAS installation directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Menu names differ between releases. Look for an installation maintenance, repair, restore, or modify program rather than relying on the exact v24 wording.

If the tool cannot open, run it as administrator. Right-click KOMPAS Installation Tool, select Run as administrator, and repeat the restore.

Fix 2: Add the Standard Parts component

A repair cannot restore a component that was never installed.

  1. Open KOMPAS Installation Tool from the KOMPAS Start-menu group.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Expand the available KOMPAS components.
  5. Enable Standard Parts, PartLib, or the similarly named library component.
  6. Click Set.
  7. Allow the installer to complete.
  8. Restart KOMPAS-3D and test Standard Parts.

If the installer asks for source files, use the original ASCON installation package or your organization’s licensed installation media. Do not point it at a random folder containing a DLL from another computer.

Fix 3: Reinstall the matching KOMPAS release

Use this when Restore Now fails, the installation tool reports missing source files, or the program was partially removed.

Before uninstalling, back up custom libraries, templates, and configuration files. Some library files can be removed during uninstall.

  1. Close KOMPAS-3D and related applications.
  2. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  4. Find the installed KOMPAS-3D release.
  5. Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the same KOMPAS release from ASCON or approved licensed media.
  8. Select Standard Parts or PartLib when the component list appears.
  9. Start KOMPAS-3D and test the failing operation.

Do not replace a DLL from an older or newer release. KOMPAS components can depend on matching exports, interfaces, and supporting libraries.

Fix 4: Check the file and its dependencies

A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that plclient_kompas.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, search the KOMPAS installation folder for the file. If it exists, do not overwrite it immediately. Instead:

  1. Note the full path of the DLL.
  2. Check whether the failing application is loading KOMPAS from that same installation.
  3. Remove or rename stray copies in unrelated application folders only when you are certain they are not used by another installation.
  4. Run the KOMPAS repair procedure.
  5. If the message remains, use a reputable dependency diagnostic tool to identify the missing module.

A missing Microsoft runtime may appear as MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another runtime name. Install only the runtime specifically identified by the diagnostic result. Microsoft provides the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable, including official x86 and x64 packages.

The runtime architecture must match the application loading the library. x86 and x64 runtimes can coexist. Installing both does not turn a 32-bit KOMPAS component into a 64-bit one.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine an application file after an update or repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving KOMPAS, ASCON, PartLib, or plclient_kompas.dll.
  5. Verify that the original file came from a trusted ASCON installation.
  6. If it was quarantined, restore it only when its source is trusted.
  7. Run KOMPAS repair afterward so the installation can verify all related files.

Protection History keeps events for a limited period, so an older quarantine may no longer appear. If there is any doubt, reinstall from official media instead of allowing the detected file.

Fix 6: Check architecture and custom integrations

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit library in the same process. Public records show at least one 32-bit build of this file, but that does not mean every KOMPAS release uses that architecture.

Check the application that reports the error, not just the operating system:

  • A 64-bit Windows installation may still run a 32-bit KOMPAS-related program.
  • Excel’s bitness matters when VBA calls the library.
  • A custom C# or VB application must use the correct unmanaged calling convention and interfaces.
  • A simple DllImport declaration may not reproduce the API-loading pattern required by KOMPAS.

ASCON integration examples load the library dynamically and resolve functions such as PLInsert2D and PLInsert3D. If the error occurs only in a custom application, confirm the executable’s working directory, DLL search path, bitness, exported entry points, and API marshaling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

regsvr32 is not the normal fix. This library is used as an exported API library rather than as a self-registering COM component. Registering it may produce an error without changing anything, and forcing registration does not repair missing dependencies.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers

A graphics or hardware driver is not the usual cause of a missing PartLib DLL, but driver problems can cause KOMPAS-3D to fail after the DLL has been restored.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the active adapter and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Reopen KOMPAS-3D and test the same operation.

For a clean driver repair, download the correct package from the graphics hardware manufacturer or use Windows Update. Do not substitute a graphics driver for the KOMPAS repair itself.

Manually hunting through hardware models and driver branches can be slow, especially when several devices are outdated. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the matching KOMPAS release remains the definitive fix for plclient_kompas.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when necessary

Use Windows repair commands when multiple unrelated programs show corruption, Windows reports damaged system files, or KOMPAS repair fails alongside broader system problems. These commands do not recreate a missing ASCON DLL.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run the KOMPAS Installation Tool’s restore operation again.

DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither is a substitute for reinstalling KOMPAS-3D.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version. For this app-specific DLL, repair or reinstall KOMPAS-3D remains the required step.

Do not download plclient_kompas.dll separately

Random DLL download pages create several risks:

  • The file may contain malware or be tampered with.
  • Its release may not match your KOMPAS installation.
  • Its architecture may be wrong.
  • Required companion files may still be missing.
  • Replacing one file may hide the actual damaged installation.

Use the KOMPAS Installation Tool, the original ASCON installer, or licensed organizational media. Keep the restored file inside the KOMPAS installation tree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep one supported KOMPAS release installed unless you specifically need multiple versions.
  • Do not delete PartLib folders to reclaim disk space.
  • Back up custom libraries before uninstalling or modifying KOMPAS.
  • Check antivirus Protection History after major KOMPAS updates.
  • Avoid copying KOMPAS DLLs between computers or releases.
  • Record whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit before troubleshooting integrations.

FAQ

Is plclient_kompas.dll part of Windows?

No. It is an ASCON KOMPAS-3D Standard Parts and PartLib library.

Where should the file be located?

Normally under the ASCON or KOMPAS installation tree, commonly in a PartLibClients or LibsPartLibClients directory. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Will installing Visual C++ fix it?

Only if a dependency check identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime. The redistributable does not provide plclient_kompas.dll.

Should I run regsvr32 plclient_kompas.dll?

Usually not. This is an exported API library, not normally a self-registering COM DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the file exists?

A dependency may be missing, the wrong architecture may be loaded, or the application may be using an incompatible copy.

What if the error appears only in Excel or a custom program?

Check the host application’s bitness, DLL search path, exported functions, calling convention, and API marshaling. Repairing KOMPAS alone may not correct faulty integration code.

Can SFC restore this DLL?

No. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Restore or reinstall KOMPAS-3D to restore this ASCON component.
