plus..dll missing errors usually mean that an old Microsoft Plus component, theme, or screensaver is incomplete. If Windows reports that plus..dll was not found or could not be loaded, restore the Microsoft Plus installation that supplied it rather than downloading a random DLL.
The 60-second answer
PLUS..DLL is a genuine legacy file associated with Microsoft Plus, especially the desktop-themes components for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me. Microsoft Plus 98 was a separate companion product for Windows 98, not a current Windows component. Microsoft’s historical announcement identifies Plus 98 as Microsoft software for Windows 98: Microsoft Plus 98 announcement.

The safest repair is:
- Identify the program showing the error.
- Reinstall the complete matching Microsoft Plus package or restore it from a trusted backup.
- Restore the related theme, screensaver, and application files from the same source.
- Do not place an unknown copy in
C:WindowsSystem32. - Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears.
- Do not run
regsvr32unless the application documentation specifically requires registration.
There is no current official Microsoft standalone download for plus..dll.

The exact wording depends on the program that requested the file. Typical Windows loader messages include:

The program can't start because plus..dll is missing from your computer. The code execution cannot proceed because plus..dll was not found. There was a problem starting plus..dll.plus..dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
These are typical loader forms, not a verified catalogue for one particular application. The important clues are the executable name, its installation folder, your Windows version, and when the problem began.
The likely causes are:
- Microsoft Plus or its desktop-themes component was removed incompletely.
- A theme or screensaver was copied without its supporting files.
- Cleanup or security software removed the file.
- Files from Plus 95 and Plus 98 were mixed during a migration.
- An old 32-bit program is being run on a newer Windows installation.
- The file is counterfeit, damaged, or from an untrusted download.
plus..dll is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. It should not normally be present in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Microsoft Plus package
This is the correct repair when the error appears while launching a Plus theme utility, THEMES.EXE, a Plus screensaver, or another program installed with the package.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If you have the original installer or disc
- Insert the original Microsoft Plus media or mount a backup image.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the installer.
- Right-click the setup program and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- If repair is unavailable, choose Remove, restart Windows, then run setup again.
- Install the same Plus release that originally supplied the theme or screensaver.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the original program from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair restores more than one DLL. Historical Plus themes used THEMES.EXE, PLUS..DLL, a Themes directory, and related resources. Some Plus screensavers also depended on the file. Installing only one DLL can leave the application broken in a different way.
If the installer is on a backup
Restore the complete application folder and its related files from the same known-good installation. Do not combine a file from one Plus release with themes or screensavers from another unless you have preserved a backup and are testing inside a disposable environment.
Historical references place Plus theme files under a path similar to:
%ProgramFiles%Plus.
On Windows 9x, related screensaver files were commonly stored under:
%WINDIR%System
Those paths are historical clues, not instructions to copy files into modern Windows system directories.
You will know this fix worked when the original executable opens without the missing-file message and its themes or screensavers load normally. If the same message remains, identify the executable shown in the error and continue with the compatibility steps below.
Fix 2: Restore a copied theme or screensaver correctly
A .theme, .scr, or screensaver DLL copied from another Windows 9x computer may expect plus..dll and several additional files.
Do this instead of copying only the missing filename:
- Find the original backup or computer from which the theme was copied.
- Locate the complete Plus installation directory.
- Copy the entire matching Plus folder to a backup location.
- Restore the original theme, screensaver, and supporting files together.
- Reinstall or recreate the shortcut to the original executable.
- Test the program from its restored application directory.
Keep the restored files together with the executable when the software was designed that way. A 32-bit legacy application may search beside its executable before it searches Windows directories.
If no complete source exists, the practical solution is to run the software inside a preserved Windows 95, 98, or Me virtual machine. Compatibility mode on Windows 10 or Windows 11 may help an old executable start, but it does not guarantee that the Plus themes utility will function.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined it
A security product may have removed a file from an old application folder. Its absence does not prove that the detection was a false positive.
Rank #3
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect entries around the time the error began.
- Expand any detection involving
plus..dll. - Check the detected path, program, and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from trusted original media and you have checked the complete installation.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can expose the computer if the detection was valid. If the file came from an unknown download, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and obtain the application from legitimate original media instead.
To scan the computer:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If the restored file is detected again, do not keep forcing it back into place. Replace the entire legacy application from a trusted source.
Fix 4: Test the old program’s compatibility
This is useful after restoring the complete installation, especially when the program was copied from Windows 95, 98, or Me to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Locate the executable that produces the error.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the executable again.
If the error changes from a missing DLL message to a crash, display problem, or access error, Windows has found the file but the old application still has compatibility or dependency problems. Restore the complete original program rather than adding more individual DLLs.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for missing or damaged DLLs.
Running this:
regsvr32 plus..dll
may produce an entry-point or registration error and will not recreate missing Plus files. Microsoft documents the command and its intended behavior here: regsvr32 command.
Use registration only when the original software documentation explicitly says that the DLL is an ActiveX or COM component that must be registered. The available evidence for plus..dll points to a legacy Plus dependency, not a general registration requirement.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
plus..dll is not verified as a protected Windows system file. SFC and DISM therefore usually will not recreate it. They are still appropriate if Windows has broader corruption or other built-in files are failing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft’s repair sequence is documented in its System File Checker guidance.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSFC or DISM succeeding does not mean that Microsoft Plus has been restored. If plus..dll is still missing, reinstall the original Plus package.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you guessing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling Microsoft Plus remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that package.
Fix 7: Check drivers only for secondary symptoms
A graphics driver will not normally supply plus..dll, so updating drivers is not a primary solution. Check drivers only if the old program also produces display corruption, fails to change themes, or crashes after the missing-file problem has been resolved.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the program again.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because a legacy DLL is missing. If you are manually checking several hardware categories and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies available updates, while installation is handled by the full version. It does not replace restoring the original Microsoft Plus installation.

Random DLL sites can provide:
- A damaged or modified file
- The wrong Plus release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file bundled with malware
- A DLL that still lacks the rest of the application
A 32-bit Windows 9x-era file is not interchangeable with a native 64-bit Windows system binary. Copying it into System32 can create conflicts, and Windows uses System32 for native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. Copying it into SysWOW64 is not a reliable repair either.
Use the original Plus installation disc, a legitimate backup, or the original application installer. If no trusted source remains, preserve the old software in a suitable virtual machine rather than weakening modern Windows security.
What to do when no original media exists
First check old installation backups, disc images, and the computer on which the theme or screensaver originally worked. Restore the complete application, not just plus..dll.

FAQ
Is plus..dll a genuine file?
Yes. The unusual punctuation is legitimate, and the filename is associated with Microsoft Plus rather than being an automatically generated Windows name.
Does Windows 11 include plus..dll?
There is no verified evidence that Windows 10 or Windows 11 ships with it. It belongs to the older Microsoft Plus software ecosystem.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not based on this filename alone. plus..dll is associated with Microsoft Plus themes and related legacy components, not those modern runtime packages.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I copy the file into System32?
Not as a general fix. Use a matching file from the same Plus installation and restore the complete application in its original environment.
What version should the file have?
One archival report identifies a Plus 98 copy as version 4.40.500, dated 5 May 1999, and approximately 140 KB. That is one reported build, not a universal version or complete Microsoft catalogue.
What if the error appears only for one user account?
First confirm that the file and application installation are intact. Only then test the program from a new Windows profile. A new profile will not repair a missing Plus installation.
What if no legitimate copy can be found?
Do not use a random DLL download. Abandon the old theme utility or run the complete preserved software inside an appropriately maintained Windows 9x environment.
