“The program can’t start because pmx2hal.dll is missing from your computer.”

pmx2hal.dll is a historical KYRO graphics-driver file, not a normal Windows component. It belongs to the PowerVR KYRO and KYRO II family from Imagination Technologies Ltd., where its description is “KYRO DirectX Driver.”

The safest repair is to identify the installed graphics card and reinstall its complete, matching driver package. Do not download a loose copy of pmx2hal.dll and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder. That can produce a version mismatch, expose the system to malware, or leave the underlying driver installation broken.

Which fix applies to you

Use the situation that best matches what you see:

  • The computer has a KYRO or KYRO II card: Reinstall the complete KYRO graphics-driver package for that exact card and operating system.
  • The file disappeared after antivirus activity: Check Protection history, but restore the file only when it came from a verified original driver package.
  • A game crashes or shows a blue screen mentioning pmx2hal.dll: Treat this as a possible driver instability or compatibility problem, not automatically as a missing-file error.
  • The machine was upgraded to Windows 10 or Windows 11: Expect limitations. A historical 32-bit KYRO driver may not work with the modern display-driver model.
  • No KYRO hardware is installed: The file may be left over from an old application, an incomplete driver removal, or an incorrect installation. Do not install it blindly.
  • Several Windows components are also failing: Run DISM and SFC after checking the graphics driver.
  • The error began immediately after a driver change: Roll back or use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.

What pmx2hal.dll is

pmx2hal.dll is a 32-bit user-mode component from the KYRO graphics-driver family. Historical KYRO packages installed it alongside files such as pmx2.drv, pmx2ogl.dll, Pmxapi.dll, Pmxdiag.dll, and KYRO installation files.

It was used by old DirectX games and 3D applications that depended on the KYRO display driver. It is not:

  • A Windows system DLL
  • A Microsoft DirectX redistributable file
  • A Visual C++ runtime component
  • A .NET component
  • A general-purpose file that belongs in every Windows installation

The name may appear in several reported errors, including “was not found,” “is missing or corrupted,” “failed to load,” and “the specified module could not be found.” The last message can be misleading: Windows may find pmx2hal.dll but fail to load one of its dependencies.

Historical driver releases did not all contain an identical binary. File size, version, and package contents can vary between KYRO models and operating-system targets. Treat claims about a universal version or a reliable modern x64 download with caution. The surviving packages identify this as a Win32-era driver component.

Fix 1: Confirm that a KYRO card is installed

Before replacing anything, confirm that the computer actually has KYRO hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Look for a device identified as KYRO, KYRO II, or a related PowerVR adapter.
  5. Double-click the adapter.
  6. Check the General tab for a device status message.
  7. Open the Driver tab and record the provider, date, version, and driver files if Windows shows them.

If Device Manager lists Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, an unrelated graphics card, or no display adapter at all, do not assume that pmx2hal.dll belongs to the current system. An old application may be looking for a driver that was removed years ago.

Also check the program’s installation folder:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the folder of the game or 3D application that reports the error.
  3. Search that folder for pmx2hal.dll.
  4. If a copy exists, right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Review Details and Digital Signatures.

A file found in an unexpected location should not automatically be trusted because its filename is genuine. Record its full path before changing it.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete KYRO driver package

This is the most appropriate repair when a KYRO card is present.

The package must match:

  • The exact card model
  • The Windows version
  • The historical driver branch intended for that operating system
  • The architecture supported by the package

Do not mix a file from a KYRO II package with a different KYRO model or copy a DLL from another computer. A package that contains pmx2hal.dll is not necessarily correct for every KYRO card.

Remove the current device entry

  1. Save your work and close games or 3D applications.
  2. Press Windows key + X.
  3. Select Device Manager.
  4. Expand Display adapters.
  5. Right-click the KYRO device.
  6. Select Uninstall device.
  7. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you have the correct replacement package ready.
  8. Select Uninstall.
  9. Restart the computer.

Microsoft warns against casually deleting files from the Windows driver store. Use Device Manager or the original setup program rather than manually removing driver files.

Install the matching package

Use the original installation CD, a preserved package supplied with the card, or a trustworthy archive of the original vendor release. A current official Imagination Technologies desktop-KYRO download page could not be verified, so be careful with websites offering isolated DLL files or claiming to provide a universal modern driver.

Run the original setup program when possible. If the package does not include a setup program:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the display adapter.
  3. Select Update driver.
  4. Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
  5. Select the folder containing the extracted driver package.
  6. Enable Include subfolders.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Restart Windows when installation completes.

If Windows refuses the driver because it is unsigned, incompatible, or intended for an older operating system, do not force installation casually. That refusal may indicate that the historical driver cannot operate safely on the current Windows release.

  • This low profile video card is good value option for entry level, if you just want basic upgrade graphics and daily simple work for your computer, or not be AAA gamer.(include low profile bracket)
  • No external power supply and the all-solid-state capacitor keeps low power consumption and high performance, supports Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP(not compatible with windows 11).

After restarting, open Device Manager again. A successful installation should show the KYRO adapter rather than Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, with no warning icon. Launch the affected program and check whether the original error has disappeared.

If the application now starts but crashes during 3D rendering, the missing-file problem may be resolved and a separate driver compatibility issue may remain.

Manually comparing old driver packages and determining which one matches the card can take considerable time, especially when several display, chipset, and audio drivers are outdated. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver updates; its repair or driver installation features require the full version, and it is not a substitute for a verified KYRO package when the hardware is unsupported.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software may remove a driver component if it is detected as suspicious, damaged, or unwanted. Do not disable antivirus protection just to force a DLL into place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving pmx2hal.dll or the KYRO driver package.
  7. Review the detected file path and the detection details.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The file came from the original KYRO driver package.
  • The package matches the installed card and operating system.
  • The detection is demonstrably a false positive.
  • You have checked the file’s Properties and source.

If the file came from an unknown download site, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete driver package instead. A restored file may still be the wrong release or may depend on other files that are missing.

Fix 4: Check the driver package and application path

A pmx2hal.dll error can occur when the file exists but Windows cannot load it.

Check these points:

  1. Confirm that the file is in the location expected by the KYRO package or application.
  2. Check whether companion files such as pmx2.drv and related KYRO DLLs are also present.
  3. Check the file’s Properties for a reasonable publisher and package location.
  4. Compare the file with the complete original driver package rather than with a random online copy.
  5. Look for a second, conflicting KYRO installation left behind by an earlier driver release.

Do not place duplicate copies in Windows folders in an attempt to satisfy the error. The application and display driver must use compatible files from the same release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message says “the specified module could not be found” while pmx2hal.dll is visibly present, reinstalling the entire package is more useful than replacing that one file. One of its dependencies may be missing, incorrectly registered internally, or incompatible with the current Windows display stack.

Fix 5: Distinguish a missing file from a driver crash

Not every error naming pmx2hal.dll means that the file is absent.

A genuine missing-file problem usually occurs when an application starts and immediately reports that the file cannot be found. A driver crash is more likely when:

  • The game starts but crashes during 3D rendering.
  • The screen flickers or goes black.
  • Windows reports a display-driver reset.
  • The computer freezes or shows a blue screen.
  • Several DirectX applications fail after a graphics-driver change.
  • The error began after upgrading Windows.

Historical KYRO systems were reported to crash in older 3D games, including DirectX titles. Those reports are consistent with driver instability or hardware incompatibility and do not prove that the DLL itself was missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run dxdiag to inspect the display stack:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type dxdiag.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Save All Information.
  5. Save the report.
  6. Open the Display section and review the adapter, driver details, and reported problems.

If the file is restored but the system still crashes under 3D load, try the correct alternate historical KYRO driver release if one is available for the card and operating system. Within the affected application, test software rendering or reduce hardware-acceleration options if the program provides them.

  • Original half height bracket matches with the low profile brackets make the Glorto GeForce GT 730 graphics card fit well with all PC tower, small form factor and HTPC(except micro form factor)

Compatibility mode can sometimes help an old application start, but it cannot provide a missing display driver or convert a 32-bit historical driver into a modern 64-bit graphics driver.

Fix 6: Do not reinstall DirectX as the first repair

Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime provides legacy side-by-side components used by some games, including D3DX, XInput, XAudio, XACT, and Managed DirectX libraries. It does not provide the KYRO display driver or pmx2hal.dll.

Install the runtime only when the application also reports a missing legacy DirectX component:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime download.
  2. Download the installer from Microsoft.
  3. Run the installer.
  4. Follow the setup prompts.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application again.

If the only missing file is pmx2hal.dll, reinstalling DirectX will normally not restore it. The complete KYRO graphics-driver package is the relevant installation.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this driver DLL

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX components. It is not a normal repair method for a KYRO graphics-driver DLL.

Running this command:

regsvr32 pmx2hal.dll

may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean the file needs to be registered another way. It means the command is inappropriate for this component.

Use the driver installer and Device Manager instead. Do not repeatedly register or unregister pmx2hal.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC generally cannot recreate a third-party KYRO DLL. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged and several unrelated applications are failing.

First run DISM:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing Windows components. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but pmx2hal.dll remains missing, return to the KYRO driver package rather than repeating the scans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For users who do not want to interpret lengthy repair output or repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems; its repair features require the full version, and it cannot replace a properly matched legacy KYRO driver.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent driver change

System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after removing a driver, running a cleanup utility, or installing an update.

Rank #4

  • Original half height bracket matches with the low profile brackets make the Glorto GeForce GT 210 graphics card fit well with all PC tower, small form factor and HTPC(except micro form factor)
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Select Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not guarantee that the correct KYRO package will be installed. It is a rollback option, not a replacement for obtaining the matching driver.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility limits

KYRO drivers were created for older Windows releases and a historical graphics architecture. Installing an old package on Windows 10 or Windows 11 may fail, install only partially, or produce unstable 3D behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but that does not mean an old 32-bit display driver is compatible with the modern 64-bit operating system. Do not trust an “x64” label on an isolated download unless it is documented by the original hardware package.

If the card works only under its original supported Windows environment, the practical choices are:

  • Use a compatible legacy Windows installation.
  • Run the old application in a properly configured virtual machine where the required graphics behavior is available.
  • Replace the KYRO hardware with a graphics adapter supported by the current Windows release.
  • Use software rendering when the application supports it.

If every repair fails on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the likely issue is unsupported legacy hardware or software, not the need for another copy of pmx2hal.dll.

Prevention

  • Keep the complete original KYRO driver package with the card’s model information.
  • Record the working driver version before replacing or cleaning it.
  • Create a restore point before changing graphics drivers.
  • Do not use random DLL download sites.
  • Do not copy driver DLLs into System32, SysWOW64, or application folders unless the original software vendor specifically instructs you to do so.
  • Keep old game installers and their documented prerequisites together.
  • Use game-file verification only for game files. It normally will not reinstall a display driver.
  • Review antivirus quarantine before assuming a driver file was deleted.
  • Avoid driver-cleaning tools unless you have the correct replacement package ready.

FAQ

Is pmx2hal.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party KYRO graphics-driver component attributed to Imagination Technologies Ltd.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does DirectX install pmx2hal.dll?

No. Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime installs older DirectX libraries, not the KYRO display driver.

Should I download pmx2hal.dll separately?

No. A loose DLL may be malicious, the wrong architecture, the wrong KYRO release, or missing companion files. Restore the complete matching driver package instead.

Can I copy it into System32?

That is not a safe general repair. The file belongs to a historical driver package and is not a standard Windows system DLL.

Does regsvr32 pmx2hal.dll fix the error?

Normally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering OLE and ActiveX components, not ordinary KYRO driver DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error remain when the file is present?

A dependency may be missing, the package may be incomplete, or the driver may be incompatible with the current Windows version. Reinstall the complete matching package and inspect dxdiag.

Will verifying game files fix it?

Usually not. Game verification can restore application files, but it generally does not reinstall a graphics driver.

What if the game still crashes after reinstalling the driver?

The missing-file issue may be resolved while the underlying KYRO driver remains unstable. Try a compatible historical driver release, software rendering, a supported legacy environment, or replacement hardware.
