vfpoledb.dll is the Microsoft Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider, and Windows does not normally include it. If vfpoledb.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the application that needs Visual FoxPro or install the matching Microsoft provider instead of downloading a loose DLL.
The provider lets database programs open Visual FoxPro tables through OLE DB. Older ERP programs, reporting tools, database utilities, Power BI connections, Access or Excel workflows, IIS applications, services, and Visual FoxPro software may depend on it.
What vfpoledb.dll is and which package you need
| Item | Verified information |
|---|---|
| File | vfpoledb.dll |
| Description | Microsoft Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Purpose | Provides OLE DB access to Visual FoxPro databases and tables |
| Windows component | No. It is not normally supplied by Windows |
| Common location | C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DB or C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DB |
| Microsoft package | Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro 8.0, download file vfpoledb.exe |
| Legacy alternative | Visual FoxPro 9 provider, historically distributed as VFPOLEDBSetup.msi |
Microsoft’s accessible download page identifies the provider package as version 8.0a and states that it requires OLE DB system components supplied by MDAC 2.6 or later. Check the application’s documentation before choosing Provider 8 or Provider 9 because they are not interchangeable in every deployment. The official Microsoft download page is the safest starting point for Provider 8: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro 8.0.
Visual FoxPro 9 itself reached the end of extended support on January 13, 2015. That does not automatically prevent the provider from working, but it means very old software may need vendor-specific compatibility guidance. Microsoft’s lifecycle information is available here: Visual FoxPro 9.0 lifecycle.

vfpoledb.dll was not found |
The file or its installation package is missing |
The code execution cannot proceed because vfpoledb.dll was not found |
The application cannot load the provider |
The program can't start because vfpoledb.dll is missing from your computer |
The application installation is incomplete or damaged |
The 'VFPOLEDB.1' provider is not registered on the local machine |
The provider exists or is expected, but its COM registration is unavailable |
The specified module could not be found |
The DLL or one of its dependencies may be missing |
| A failure only in IIS, a service, Power BI, or a gateway | The process may use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture |
Before changing anything, record the name of the program showing the error, the complete message, and whether the program is desktop software, an IIS application, a Windows service, Power BI, SSIS, Access, Excel, or a reporting system.
Fix 1: Repair the application that needs Visual FoxPro
This is the safest first fix because the parent application may install the correct provider version, dependencies, and registry entries together.
- Close the affected program.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find the program that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again and repeat the operation that previously failed.
If there is no Repair option, open the application’s own installer or Control Panel:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Complete the installer and restart Windows if requested.
If repair does not restore the provider, uninstall the affected program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the vendor’s original installer. This is especially important after an incomplete uninstall, failed update, migration to a new computer, or antivirus quarantine.
How to tell whether this worked
The application should open without the loader error, and any database connection that previously failed should complete. If the message changes to “provider is not registered,” the file may now exist but its registration or architecture is wrong. Continue with the checks below rather than copying another DLL.
Fix 2: Install the matching Microsoft OLE DB provider
Use this path when the application documentation specifically says it needs the Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider, or when repairing the application did not install it.
For Provider 8:
- Open Microsoft’s Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider download page.
- Download
vfpoledb.exe. - Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart the application.
- Test the database connection again.
The installer is preferable to copying a DLL because it installs the provider and its COM registration. Microsoft notes that the Provider 8 package requires MDAC 2.6 or later. Most supported Windows installations already contain the relevant data-access components, but an old or heavily modified system may need additional application-specific repair.

Older applications may refer to VFPOLEDBSetup.msi. Do not assume that Provider 8 will replace Provider 9 in every deployment, and do not install an unverified package simply because its filename looks familiar.
Check whether the file exists
After installation, open File Explorer and check these historical provider locations:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DBvfpoledb.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DBvfpoledb.dll
The filename may appear as VfpOleDB.dll, VFPOLEDB.dll, or vfpoledb.dll; Windows file access is not normally affected by capitalization.
If the file is present but the application still reports that the provider is missing, the next question is registration and process architecture.
Fix 3: Match the provider to the application’s architecture
A 64-bit version of Windows does not mean that every application needs a 64-bit provider. The calling process determines which provider registry view it can use.
Many legacy Visual FoxPro applications use the 32-bit provider. This is common with older desktop software, database tools, reporting applications, IIS deployments, and some Power BI or gateway configurations.
For a 32-bit desktop application
Install and use the 32-bit provider. Its typical location is:
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DBvfpoledb.dll
A 64-bit Windows installation can run this provider through its 32-bit application environment.

For a .NET application
If the program is built for Any CPU, ask the software developer whether it must be compiled for x86. A 32-bit-only provider cannot be loaded by a 64-bit process.
In Visual Studio, the usual setting is:
- Open the project.
- Select Build.
- Select the correct project.
- Set Platform target to
x86. - Rebuild and test.
The exact setting depends on the project type, so do not change the architecture of a production application without confirming its deployment requirements.
For IIS
If the failure occurs only through a website or web service:
- Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Select Application Pools.
- Select the pool used by the application.
- Choose Advanced Settings.
- Find Enable 32-Bit Applications.
- Set it to True when the application requires the 32-bit provider.
- Select OK.
- Recycle the application pool and test the site.
A provider that works from an interactive desktop session can still fail under IIS because IIS runs a different process, registry view, identity, and environment.
For Power BI, SSIS, gateways, and reporting tools
Match the provider to the bitness of the process that actually performs the connection. The bitness of Windows, the development tool, the Power BI desktop application, and the gateway service may differ.
If the connection works in a desktop designer but fails after publishing or scheduling, test the gateway or server process separately. Install the provider in the architecture used by that service, then restart the service.
Fix 4: Register the provider only when registration is the error
regsvr32 can register DLL-based COM components, and the Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider is a COM-based provider. It is appropriate when the provider file is physically present but the application specifically says that VFPOLEDB is not registered.
It is not the normal solution for a genuinely missing file. Install or repair the provider first.
Register a 32-bit provider on 64-bit Windows
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DBvfpoledb.dll"
Register a 64-bit provider
For a 64-bit DLL, the usual command is:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DBvfpoledb.dll"
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the 64-bit system tools, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit tools.
Replace the path with the actual location on the computer. A successful registration message means the registration command completed; it does not prove that the application is using the correct registry architecture. Restart the application and test again.
If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be loaded, check the path, provider architecture, and dependencies. Do not repeatedly register random copies from different folders.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and installation history
Security software can quarantine a legitimate legacy component, particularly after an application update or reinstall.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
vfpoledb.dll. - Confirm that the file came from the legitimate application or Microsoft provider installer.
- Restore it only when its origin is verified.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward.
If another security product is installed, open its quarantine or detection history instead. Reinstalling from the official application or Microsoft package is safer than restoring an isolated file and hoping its registration remains intact.
Fix 6: Resolve dependency or service-specific failures
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that vfpoledb.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency, or the service account may not be able to access the installation.
Check the following:
- Confirm that the provider file exists in the installed provider directory.
- Confirm that the application uses the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture as the provider.
- Test the application under the account that normally runs it.
- For a Windows service, restart the service after repairing the provider.
- For IIS, recycle the application pool after changing its bitness.
- For SQL Server, SSIS, or a gateway, restart the relevant service after installation.
- Check whether the provider was installed for all users or only as part of a per-user application setup.
- If the error appeared after moving the program, reinstall its database components on the new system.
Installing the Visual FoxPro ODBC driver does not install the OLE DB provider. ODBC and OLE DB are separate data-access components, so choose the package required by the application’s connection string.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
vfpoledb.dll is a third-party Microsoft application component, not normally a protected Windows system file. SFC and DISM usually will not reinstall it. They are appropriate when you also have evidence of broader Windows corruption, failed updates, damaged system files, or unusual servicing errors.

A graphics or chipset driver does not normally install vfpoledb.dll, so Device Manager is not the primary repair tool for this error. Use it only when the failure began immediately after a Windows upgrade, hardware change, or driver installation and other applications are also malfunctioning.

For a failed update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. Obtain hardware drivers from the computer or hardware manufacturer when Windows cannot find a suitable version.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help when identifying which of many installed drivers is stale is the manual bottleneck; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version.
Windows Features are also not a replacement for the FoxPro provider. Do not enable random legacy features hoping they will create vfpoledb.dll. Only enable a Windows feature when the application’s own documentation specifically requires it.
What not to do
Do not download vfpoledb.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. That file may contain malware, belong to the wrong provider version, use the wrong architecture, lack COM registration, or hide a missing dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not copy a file from another computer unless the application vendor explicitly provides that deployment method. A loose DLL does not reliably install the provider, registry entries, dependencies, or correct per-machine configuration.
Do not run 64-bit regsvr32 against a 32-bit provider, and do not assume that a successful registration proves the calling application can see it.
For packaged software or games that include a launcher, use its Verify files or Repair option first. For business software, use the vendor’s installer or support channel. The definitive fix for an application-specific deployment remains reinstalling or repairing that application with its documented provider package.
Frequently asked questions
Is vfpoledb.dll part of Windows?
No. It is part of Microsoft Visual FoxPro or the separately installed Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider. Windows may run the application that needs it, but Windows does not normally provide the file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which application installed vfpoledb.dll?
The parent application may have installed it, or an administrator may have installed the standalone provider package. Look at the program that displays the error, its installer documentation, and the provider installation directories. There is no universal Windows application that owns every copy.
Should I install the Visual FoxPro runtime?
Only if the application requires the Visual FoxPro runtime. The runtime and the OLE DB Provider are separate components. A database connection that requests VFPOLEDB needs the OLE DB provider, not merely the runtime.
Does installing the ODBC driver fix this error?
Usually not. ODBC and OLE DB are different access technologies. Install the component named by the application or connection string.
Why does the file exist but the provider is still not registered?
The COM registration may be missing, the wrong registry view may have been registered, or the application may be running with a different architecture. Confirm the process bitness, then use the matching regsvr32 command only after repairing or installing the provider.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do I need a 64-bit provider because Windows is 64-bit?
No. The calling process determines compatibility. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs the 32-bit provider.
What if reinstalling changes nothing?
Capture the application name, Windows version, complete error text, provider path, process bitness, and whether the failure occurs interactively or only under IIS, a service, SQL Server, Power BI, or a gateway. That information lets the software vendor distinguish a missing provider from registration, dependency, permission, and architecture failures.
Is Visual FoxPro still supported?
Visual FoxPro 9 is a legacy, out-of-support product. If the application cannot run reliably in the current environment after the provider is correctly installed, ask the vendor about a supported replacement or an appropriate isolated environment rather than continually replacing DLL files.
