The process has three stages: nominations create a longlist, fans vote to produce a shortlist, and winners are announced at a later ceremony. That structure makes category fit important: the category helps explain your game to voters before they ever reach the detailed nomination text.

Release windows are tied to the award year
For the 12th Pocket Gamer Awards, new-release eligibility covered games released from 1 October 2024 through 30 September 2025. The 2027 awards page uses a different window: 1 October 2025 through 30 September 2026. Those dates are examples of annual rules, not a permanent definition. Some categories can draw on the broader mobile-game back catalogue, particularly awards about ongoing play, community or updates. Always read the current award-year page for the exact dates and exceptions.
The first test: identify the dominant player experience
Most games combine genres. A strategy game may contain role-playing progression; an action game may include puzzles; a sports title may have a large online community. Do not choose a category by counting features. Ask what players spend most of their meaningful time doing, which skill determines success and what they would mention first when describing the game to another player.

- Core loop: What repeated activity produces progress or victory?
- Primary skill: Is success mainly about reflexes, planning, solving, building, collecting or social coordination?
- Progression structure: Do quests and character builds define the journey, or are they supporting systems?
- Player expectation: What category would a new player reasonably look for when searching for this type of game?
Use a genre category when that core experience is the reason the game stands out. Use an update, ongoing-play, community, innovation or collaboration-oriented category when the strongest evidence is what happened after launch or how the game changed the medium.

How to separate action, RPG and strategy
For a game that fits several genres, compare the dominant activity rather than the marketing label. If players spend most of their time aiming, dodging and executing attacks, action is the stronger fit even when the game has levels and equipment. If the main decisions involve builds, quests and long-term character development, RPG is stronger. If planning, information and resource trade-offs decide outcomes, strategy is stronger.
Strategy versus SLG/simulation
Use Best Mobile Strategy Game when tactical or strategic choices are the principal challenge. Use Best Mobile SLG/Simulation Game when the appeal comes from running systems: managing a city, building an economy, operating an organization or watching interconnected simulation rules respond to decisions. State the management or simulation layer explicitly so voters understand why the entry is not simply another strategy game.

Recognition categories for updates, longevity and distinction

The 2027 page explicitly lists persistent categories including Best Character, Best Game We’re Still Playing, Best Community, Best Webshop, Best Game Update and Best In-Game Collab. Because category names and descriptions can change, treat that list as a prompt to check the current rules rather than as a guarantee that every category appears unchanged each year.
How to build a convincing nomination
- Write the primary loop in one sentence. Use a verb-led description such as “Players build and defend a settlement by allocating scarce resources” or “Players solve spatial puzzles by rotating connected mechanisms.” Avoid a string of genre labels.
- Select the closest category. Match the sentence to the category whose defining activity is most central. If the sentence could fit three categories, identify which activity occupies the most meaningful playtime and determines success.
- Provide two or three concrete proofs. Choose a signature mechanic, a representative decision, a substantial update, a mobile-specific control solution or a clear community achievement. Specific examples are more useful than adjectives such as “innovative” or “addictive.”
- Use a persistent category when the evidence is about what happened after launch. A large live-service improvement belongs in Best Update; durable relevance belongs in Best Game We’re Still Playing; community culture belongs in Best Community. Do not force post-launch evidence into a launch genre category.
- Explain the mobile contribution. For a port, discuss the conversion. For innovation, identify the mobile-native interaction. For every category, make clear why the game is a strong mobile entry rather than simply a game that happens to run on a phone.
- Verify the year’s rules before submitting. Check the release window, whether the category is present, whether the title is considered a new release or catalogue entry and any submission-specific requirements on the current Pocket Gamer Awards page.
Resolving common overlap cases
A role-playing game with real-time combat
Choose Best Mobile RPG if quests, builds and character progression organize the experience. Choose Best Mobile Action Game if combat execution is the dominant challenge and progression mainly supports that combat. In the nomination, state which system determines success and give an example from a typical session.

A city builder with strategic battles
Choose Best Mobile SLG/Simulation Game when construction, production chains, population or management systems are the main activity. Choose Best Mobile Strategy Game when tactical planning and strategic trade-offs, rather than simulation management, drive most outcomes.
A puzzle game with a cooperative mode
Choose Best Mobile Puzzle Game when solving remains the central experience and cooperation is an optional layer. Choose Best Multiplayer Mobile Game when coordinating with other players is necessary to progress or win and is the reason the game is compelling.
An old game with a major new season
Do not assume age alone disqualifies it. The annual rules distinguish new-release eligibility from categories that can draw on the broader back catalogue. If the season or system overhaul is the achievement, Best Game Update may be a better fit than a new-release genre category. Confirm the specific year’s eligibility language.
Eligibility and timing checklist
- Record the original release date and the date of the update or collaboration you are highlighting.
- Compare the release date with the award year’s stated window; do not apply the 12th Awards dates to a later edition.
- Determine whether the category concerns a new release, an ongoing title, a publisher or developer portfolio, or an unreleased game.
- Check that the game is actually a mobile title for the relevant category and that a port is described as a mobile adaptation when applicable.
- Keep evidence tied to the achievement you are nominating. A launch category should not rely solely on a later event unless the rules invite that comparison.
What not to do
- Do not submit every genre at once without a hierarchy. A broad list makes the nomination sound uncertain.
- Do not confuse a feature with the core game. A game containing cards is not automatically a digital card game; a game with a guild is not automatically a multiplayer entry.
- Do not use Most Anticipated for a released title. That category is for an unreleased game with substantial anticipation.
- Do not treat Mobile Game of the Year as a superlative genre award. It requires an all-around case, not merely the best combat, story or graphics.
- Do not invent performance figures, vote thresholds or judging weights. The published award descriptions provide process, dates and category names, but no numeric scoring formula.
- Do not assume categories are permanent. Pocket Gamer changes windows and category lists between annual editions.
Bottom line
Start with the activity that defines a normal session, then choose the genre or format category that describes that activity most precisely. Move to Best Game Update, Best Game We’re Still Playing, Best Community, Best Mobile Innovation or another recognition category when the strongest case is about longevity, post-launch work or a distinctive achievement. Finally, check the current award-year page for dates and category names before you submit.
