Poison vs. Dragons: What the Rules Actually Allow

Sometimes, but there is no universal answer. “Dragon” is a creature category in some games and a fictional species in others, not one shared rules object. In the Dungeons & Dragons examples covered by the current rules documents, green dragons are immune to both poison damage and the poisoned condition. A poison that would harm a humanoid therefore does not automatically work on a green dragon. For any other dragon, identify the setting, edition and exact stat block before deciding.

The practical rule is simple: use the dragon’s own entry, not a general assumption about dragons. The entry may list resistance, immunity, vulnerability or no special protection at all, and it may treat poison damage separately from the poisoned condition.

Why the answer depends on the setting

Fantasy fiction does not use a single definition of “dragon.” A tabletop game, a video game, a novel and a homebrew campaign can all give dragons different biology, magic and weaknesses. Even within one game, an ancient dragon and a younger dragon may have different statistics. A statement such as “dragons are immune to poison” is therefore too broad unless it names the canon or ruleset that establishes it.

For a rules question, record three details first:

  • Setting or game: Identify the product or fictional universe.
  • Edition or version: Rules can change between editions, revisions and published supplements.
  • Exact creature: Use the named dragon’s current stat block or canonical description.

If one of those details is missing, the honest answer is conditional rather than a blanket yes or no.

How D&D separates poison damage from the poisoned condition

Damage immunity

D&D monster statistics can grant immunity to a damage type. Poison damage is the numerical harm produced by an attack, spell, breath weapon or other effect. If a creature is immune to poison damage, an effect whose relevant damage type is poison does not deal that damage under the applicable rules.

Condition immunity

The poisoned condition is a separate rules element. An entry can make a creature immune to the condition even if an effect is not described as poison damage, and it can theoretically list poison-damage immunity without listing condition immunity. Read both lines independently.

Why the distinction matters

A poison can be designed to deal damage, impose the poisoned condition, or do both. A stat block can therefore block one result while leaving another available. Do not treat the word “poison” on an item or attack as proof that every part of its effect is negated.

What the cited green-dragon entries establish

The official examples in the 2023 System Reference Document 5.1 and the approximately 2025 SRD 5.2.1 excerpt list immunity to poison damage and to the poisoned condition for the green dragons shown. Those entries also give green dragons attacks that deal poison damage, including a poison breath weapon. The 2014 Basic Rules provide the general framework: a creature’s statistics record its vulnerabilities, resistances and immunities, but the general rules text is not a substitute for a particular creature entry.

Rules source Poison damage immunity Poisoned-condition immunity Poison effects shown in the entry What you can conclude
SRD 5.2.1 excerpt, approximately 2025 Listed for the ancient green dragon Listed for the ancient green dragon Poison-damage attacks and poison breath Under that stat block, ordinary incoming poison damage and attempts to impose the poisoned condition fail.
SRD 5.1, 2023 Listed for the green dragon entry cited Listed for the green dragon entry cited Poison damage in the bite and breath The cited 5.1 green dragon is protected from both categories while still using poison offensively.
D&D Basic Rules, 2014 Not stated for a specific green dragon in the general rules passage Not stated for a specific green dragon in the general rules passage Not stated in that general passage Use the individual monster statistics for the creature and edition at your table.

These are edition-specific examples, not evidence that every dragon in D&D, or every dragon in fiction, has the same immunities.

Do contact, ingested and inhaled poisons work differently?

D&D describes poisons by delivery method, including contact, ingested and inhaled types. The method explains how the effect reaches a target; it does not override a target’s listed immunities. A contact coating, swallowed dose and inhaled cloud still have to be checked against the dragon’s traits and the effect’s wording.

For a green dragon entry that lists both poison-damage and poisoned-condition immunity, changing from an ingested poison to an inhaled one does not create a rules loophole by itself. The delivery changes, but the protected results remain protected. A different outcome would require the effect to do something outside those immunities or the game to provide a specific exception.

How to adjudicate a poison attempt at the table

Use this sequence whenever a character tries to poison a dragon:

  1. Identify the effect. Write down the poison, spell, weapon or monster ability and every result it specifies.
  2. Separate the results. Mark which part is poison damage, which part applies the poisoned condition and which part is another effect.
  3. Open the exact dragon entry. Confirm the creature’s edition, age category and form rather than searching for a generic “dragon rule.”
  4. Check damage traits. Compare the effect’s damage type with the entry’s resistances, vulnerabilities and immunities.
  5. Check condition traits separately. Look specifically for immunity to the poisoned condition; do not infer it from damage immunity.
  6. Apply delivery requirements. Verify whether the poison can reach the creature by contact, ingestion or inhalation and whether the effect requires a saving throw or another trigger.
  7. Resolve any remaining text. If the poison has a non-poison rider, such as a different damage type or a separate restriction, adjudicate that rider under its own wording.

This procedure prevents a common mistake: treating a poison as one indivisible outcome when its damage and condition components are governed by different rules.

Can you poison a green dragon?

Under the cited SRD green-dragon stat blocks, not with an ordinary effect whose relevant outcomes are poison damage or the poisoned condition. A bite coated in poison, a vial that deals poison damage when swallowed, and a cloud that applies the poisoned condition all run into the listed immunities.

That conclusion is limited to those entries. A campaign could publish a revised creature, a magical effect with an explicit exception, or a house rule that changes how immunity works. In those cases, the specific text controls. Do not silently import the SRD result into a different game, expansion or fictional setting.

Why can a green dragon use poison if it is immune to poison?

There is no contradiction. Immunity protects the dragon from an incoming effect; it does not prevent the creature from producing that effect. The cited green-dragon entries show poison breath and poison-damage attacks alongside their immunities. A dragon can therefore harm a vulnerable target with poison while remaining unaffected by the same damage type when targeted.

This is a normal asymmetry in monster design. A fire elemental can deal fire damage without being harmed by its own flames, and a venomous creature can weaponize a toxin that its physiology ignores. The stat block’s attack line and immunity line answer different questions: what the dragon does and what can affect it.

What about red, blue, black or homebrew dragons?

Do not infer another dragon’s poison defenses from the green-dragon example. For each creature, compare the same five axes:

Axis Question to answer
Setting and edition Which rules or canon are in force?
Creature identity What exact dragon, age category, variant or named character is being used?
Poison damage Does the entry list immunity, resistance, vulnerability or no special trait?
Poisoned condition Is the condition separately listed as immune, or is it unmentioned?
Effect wording Does the poison deal poison damage, impose the condition, use another damage type or include a special exception?

If a stat block does not list an immunity, do not add one because the creature is a dragon. Conversely, if it does list an immunity, do not weaken it merely because the poison is contact, ingested or inhaled.

How the answer changes outside D&D

In a video game, inspect the current enemy data, difficulty mode and patch notes. A dragon may have a percentage resistance, a temporary status immunity, a scripted vulnerability or a mechanic that ignores normal elemental rules. In a novel or tabletop setting without formal statistics, the author or game master’s canon determines whether poison affects the creature.

When comparing systems, document the result rather than translating terminology automatically. “Poison resistance” in one game may reduce damage; “poison immunity” in another may block only a status meter; a third may use “venom” as a unique damage type. The familiar D&D distinction between damage and condition is useful, but it is not a universal vocabulary.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Assuming all dragons share one trait

Fix: Name the dragon and open its entry. Species-wide assumptions are unreliable across editions and settings.

Confusing poison damage with the poisoned condition

Fix: Resolve the damage line and condition line independently. One immunity does not automatically prove the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing the delivery method and expecting immunity to disappear

Fix: Treat contact, ingested and inhaled as delivery rules, then apply the target’s traits to the resulting effect.

Mixing editions

Fix: Keep the creature statistics and poison rules from the same rules version unless your table intentionally imports material.

Overriding a stat block with real-world biology

Fix: Fictional dragons follow their published mechanics or canon, not assumptions about how animal venom works.

Ignoring explicit exceptions

Fix: Read the complete effect. A spell or artifact can define an exception, and a homebrew rule can deliberately bypass an immunity; record that exception before rolling.

A quick decision checklist

  • Have you identified the game, setting and edition?
  • Do you have the exact dragon entry, including age category or variant?
  • Does the poison deal poison damage, impose the poisoned condition, or both?
  • Is the dragon immune, resistant, vulnerable or unlisted for each result?
  • Does the delivery method meet the effect’s requirements?
  • Is there an explicit magical, narrative or house-rule exception?

If all six answers are documented, the ruling should be reproducible for everyone at the table or in the game community.

Edition and source boundaries

The rules examples discussed here span the 2014 D&D Basic Rules, the 2023 SRD 5.1 and the SRD 5.2.1 text published approximately in 2025. Those documents are not interchangeable editions. The 2014 passage establishes that monster statistics record damage traits; the SRD excerpts provide the green-dragon examples with poison and poisoned-condition immunities. Always state which version you are using when posting a ruling or writing an adventure.

Verdict

Poison can work on some dragons in some settings, but it does not work on the green dragons in the cited D&D stat blocks: those creatures are immune to poison damage and to the poisoned condition. The deciding authority is the exact dragon’s current rules entry or canon, not the word “dragon” alone and not the poison’s delivery method.
