Nintendo says Bank is not currently available for download, so first check whether the app is already installed. If it is, the right next step depends on the error: an expired-pass prompt, a game/save mismatch, and a failed HOME transfer each have different fixes.
1. Check whether Bank is installed and still available
Nintendo’s current notice says Pokémon Bank is not currently available for download. If the app is missing from your 3DS, the documented troubleshooting steps below cannot restore it. If Bank is installed, Nintendo lists it separately from the general 3DS online shutdown and gives the Bank-specific end date: February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. PST. Bank-to-HOME transfers also end then.

That means an app that will not launch or connect is not necessarily experiencing a temporary outage; availability and installation status matter first. Do not rely on older advice that assumes a new Bank download or a new pass can be obtained.
2. Install a 3DS system update if Bank requests one
If you have not used the system recently and Bank asks for a system update, connect the 3DS to the internet and complete the update. Pokémon Support lists this as a prerequisite for users who receive an update request; it is not a guaranteed fix for every connection error.

3. Verify the Nintendo Network ID and supported game
Pokémon Bank uses the Nintendo Network ID on the 3DS. A different ID accesses a different Bank, so make sure you are using the same system account associated with the boxes you expect to see. The official manual identifies Pokémon X, Pokémon Y, Pokémon Omega Ruby, and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire as supported games.
Bank’s account identity and the game/save context are related but distinct checks: confirm the ID first, then make sure the relevant supported game and its data are available if Bank reports a copy or Trainer ID mismatch.

4. Resolve the documented “different copy of Pokémon” error
For the specific message “Communication in your last session did not end properly. Performing clean up. You previously used a different copy of Pokémon. Please Try again,” Nintendo’s instructions are to restore the game context Bank expects:
- Insert the game card that matches the information Bank is trying to verify, or make sure the matching digital game is installed.
- Launch Pokémon Bank so it can verify the matching information.
- If you do not have the game or its save data, contact Nintendo support for help; the documented procedure depends on having the matching context available.
This is a targeted remedy for that message, not a general reset procedure for other Bank errors.

5. Handle an expired Bank pass separately from HOME Premium
If Bank displays “Your pass has expired. Would you like to purchase a new pass?”, Pokémon Support says to select No, follow the prompts, and choose Use Pokémon Bank to check the boxes. An expired Bank pass does not by itself mean you cannot use this documented box-check flow.
Transferring Pokémon from Bank to HOME is a separate matter: Pokémon Support says a paid Pokémon HOME Premium Plan is required for that connection and transfer. Bank pass status and HOME Premium status are independent. Nintendo’s manual describes legacy passes as expiring 365 days after purchase; that term is not an instruction or assurance that a new pass can now be purchased.

6. Match the HOME transfer steps to your setup
A Bank access issue and a HOME transfer issue are not the same problem. Use the path that matches whether you have access to the 3DS.

Pokémon HOME Premium is the paid prerequisite Pokémon Support specifies for connecting HOME and Bank to transfer Pokémon. If a transfer fails, verify the correct account relationship and, when using a 3DS, that you entered the current Moving Key before its three-minute expiry.

When to contact Nintendo
If the steps above do not address your exact error, keep its full wording and note what you tried before contacting Nintendo Customer Support. Pokémon Support directs technical issues involving Bank, Nintendo hardware, or Wi-Fi to Nintendo of America. A precise message helps distinguish an account or game-data mismatch from a connection problem.
The official instructions cited here do not recommend restarting the console, changing DNS settings, or buying hardware or storage as fixes for the account, service-availability, Trainer ID, or transfer-key conditions described above.
