Game Freak Pokémon director Shigeru Ohmori is making Ame Nochi Hare Onna, also rendered in English coverage as Rainy Day, Sunny Girl. The free-to-play mobile RPG sends magical girls into turn-based battles against garbage-shaped yokai, with one unusual requirement: their powered outfits get dirty, must be washed, and then have to dry before they can be used again. Real-world weather changes that drying time and can affect combat.
The game has been announced for iOS and Android in Japan, with a winter release window. A specific date, international launch, monetization details and minimum phone requirements have not been announced.

What is Ame Nochi Hare Onna?
Ame Nochi Hare Onna is a new, original magical-girl RPG from Game Freak, rather than a Pokémon-branded project. Ohmori, a Game Freak veteran associated with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, is directing the mobile game after more than two decades working on Pokémon projects.

Players assemble a team of magical girls who patrol a city and fight yokai shaped like discarded rubbish. Battles are turn-based, but the team’s effectiveness depends on more than selecting attacks: each girl’s outfit supplies her powers and abilities, and the condition of those outfits becomes part of the daily play loop.

How the laundry system works
Outfits provide the characters’ powers
Clothing is not merely cosmetic equipment. Each outfit determines abilities, so choosing who to bring into a fight also means deciding which powers the team needs. The system makes wardrobe management part of party building rather than a separate dress-up feature.
Used outfits become dirty
Outfits accumulate dirt as they are used. Once an outfit needs cleaning, the player must wash it before its powers can be restored for further use. The available reports do not specify how many battles cause an outfit to become dirty, whether washing consumes a resource, or whether every outfit follows the same timetable.

Drying takes real time
Washing does not return an outfit immediately. Clean clothes dry in real time, creating a period during which the player must wait or use another outfit. Sunny conditions accelerate drying, while rain slows it. The reports do not state the exact drying durations or whether the player can use items or other systems to shorten them.
Does real weather affect combat?
Yes. The game tracks real-world weather as part of its design. Weather-aligned characters can gain an advantage when conditions match them, so a rainy day or clear day may influence which magical girls and outfits are most useful.

That creates two connected decisions:
- Before a fight: check the current conditions and choose characters whose weather affinity gives the team an advantage.
- After a fight: account for which outfits are dirty, start washing them, and plan around the drying time expected under that weather.
The available information does not establish the size of weather bonuses, the full list of weather types, or whether forecasts can be viewed in advance. It does establish that weather is designed to matter both tactically and operationally, not simply as a visual effect.
A mobile RPG built around short daily sessions
The laundry and weather systems point to a deliberate rhythm: open the game, check conditions, make a team decision, complete a patrol or battle, then put used outfits through the wash. When the player returns later, the clothes may be ready again—or still drying because rain extended the wait.

This structure is different from a conventional RPG loop that assumes a character’s equipment remains available after every encounter. It also makes downtime part of the design. A player may need to rotate several outfits, reserve a clean set for a weather-sensitive battle, or simply come back after the real-world interval has passed.

Why Ohmori says this needed an original game
The project is framed as a move into a setting and format that Pokémon could not provide. Ohmori described the goal as exploring “forms of expression that can only be achieved in a completely original game.” He also characterized the concept as being “firmly rooted in real life, with a sense of everyday reality.”

Those comments help explain why ordinary activities are central mechanics. Weather tracking, laundry and waiting for clothes to dry are familiar routines, while magical-girl powers and rubbish-like yokai provide the fantasy layer. GamesRadar reported that Ohmori believed real-time weather tracking and the gameplay loop meshed “most beautifully.”
Platforms, region and release timing
The announced platforms are Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. The project has so far been announced only for Japan, and the stated launch plan is a winter release window rather than a specific day. No international release has been confirmed.
There is no published minimum hardware specification in the available coverage. Players should therefore avoid assuming that any particular iPhone, iPad or Android model will be supported until the developer publishes requirements. The same applies to storage needs, network requirements and regional account restrictions.

What has not been announced
- An exact release date or named winter year.
- International availability outside Japan.
- Detailed free-to-play monetization, including whether outfits, characters or timers can be purchased.
- Minimum device specifications, storage requirements or supported operating-system versions.
- Battle formulas, weather bonus percentages, outfit durability rules and the length of drying timers.
Until those details arrive, the clearest description is a Japan-announced mobile RPG whose central hook is the interaction between weather, outfit maintenance and turn-based battles.
The Bottom Line
Ame Nochi Hare Onna is Game Freak’s original answer to a magical-girl RPG: build a team, fight trash-themed yokai, wash the outfits that power your characters and plan around real weather while they dry. It is coming to iOS and Android in Japan during a winter window, with overseas release, exact hardware requirements and monetization still unconfirmed.
