They can also be played on Nintendo Switch 2. The leaker angle is now historical, and the original post attributed to Riddle Khu has not been verified in the available reporting.
What happened to the FireRed and LeafGreen Switch rumor?
Before Nintendo’s announcement, secondary commentary credited leaker Riddle Khu with predicting that the games would return. Because the original post was not located, its exact wording and whether Khu was the first person to tease the release are not established. Nintendo’s February 20, 2026 announcement confirmed the rereleases, and its launch schedule lists February 27, 2026 as the release date. Nintendo’s announcement and release schedule make the current status clear: these are released games, not an upcoming rumor.
What are the Switch versions?
FireRed and LeafGreen are the 2004 remakes of the original Pokémon games, not new remakes made for Switch. The official announcement describes them as returning to the original game experience and says players can encounter the original 151 Pokémon. Their release is digital-only; Nintendo says the games are available individually through Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store. Nintendo’s listed language options are English, French, or Spanish, with storefront availability varying by region. The Pokémon Company International’s announcement provides the game details.
Where can you play them?
Nintendo identifies the Nintendo Switch family, including Nintendo Switch 2, as compatible. Since the games are digital-only, you need a compatible console and access to the relevant regional Nintendo digital storefront; Nintendo does not list a physical cartridge release in its announcement.

What about Pokémon HOME and the post-game islands?
The Pokémon Company International announced Pokémon HOME connectivity for October 2026. Its notice says that once a Pokémon is moved from either Switch game into Pokémon HOME, it cannot be returned to FireRed or LeafGreen. The announcement set October 2026 as the connection window; it does not by itself establish whether the feature has rolled out in every region. Check the official HOME notice for the announced behavior and status.
The same notice says the Mystic Ticket and Aurora Ticket are added after the player defeats the Elite Four and enters the Hall of Fame. They provide access to encounters with Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys.
