To track walking while Pokémon GO is closed, turn on Adventure Sync in Main Menu → Settings → General → Adventure Sync. To get a notification when a specific Pokémon you have already seen is nearby, also set its Pokédex alert and enable Pokémon GO push notifications. The Nearby menu is a separate map feature for browsing Pokémon and nearby raids.
Adventure Sync, Pokémon alerts, and Nearby are different features

How to turn on Adventure Sync
- Open Pokémon GO and tap Main Menu.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Adventure Sync and grant the requested Apple Health or Google Fit access.
- Make sure Pokémon GO has location permission enabled on your device.
Adventure Sync is optional and is available to Trainer Level 5 and above, according to the Pokémon GO Help Center. It records kilometers traveled even when the app is not open. The game may also send push notifications when your Buddy finds Candy or an Egg is close to hatching.

How to set an alert for a specific Pokémon
- Tap Main Menu, then Pokédex.
- Search or scroll to a Pokémon you have previously seen.
- Open its entry and tap the bell icon to toggle the alert.
- Confirm Adventure Sync is enabled and Pokémon GO push notifications are allowed. The in-game notification controls are under Settings → Notifications.
The Pokémon discovery and alert help page says only one Pokémon alert can be active at a time. The feature is for a Pokémon you have seen before; it is not a way to choose an unseen species and receive a notification for it.
How to use the Nearby menu
- From Map View, tap the bar at the bottom right.
- Browse the Nearby screen for wild Pokémon associated with nearby PokéStops.
- Tap a Pokémon to see its PokéStop photo. Use the footprint control to highlight that PokéStop on the map.
- Open the Battle tab to see raid bosses at nearby Gyms.
These are the Nearby menu controls described by the Pokémon GO Help Center. The menu lets you check what is around you; it does not replace configuring a Pokédex alert.

If an alert or distance tracking does not work
- No distance progress while the app is closed: Check that Adventure Sync is on, location access is granted, and Apple Health or Google Fit access was approved.
- No Pokémon alert: Check that the bell is active on the intended Pokédex entry, Adventure Sync is enabled, and Pokémon GO push notifications are allowed in both the game’s Settings → Notifications and your device settings.
- You want to see nearby Pokémon or raids now: Open the lower-right bar on Map View rather than waiting for a notification.
The official support instructions explain these features but do not establish a release date, app version, or region-wide rollout for an update specifically named “Nearby.”
