Pokémon GO Battle League (GBL) is the game’s global player-versus-player matchmaking mode. Trainers level 10 and above can enter through the in-game Battle menu, choose a three-Pokémon team and a reward track, then battle opponents matched online. League rules determine which Pokémon are eligible; seasonal schedules, cups and rewards change, so check the Battle screen’s Current Season panel for the live rotation and end date.
How to enter GO Battle League
Open the in-game Battle menu and select GO Battle League. Choose an available league or cup, prepare a party, select Basic or Premium Rewards, and enter matchmaking. GBL pairs Trainers seeking battles through its global system; a battle with a friend or a practice battle against a Team Leader does not affect GBL rank. Niantic’s GO Battle League help page says the mode is available to Trainers at level 10 and above.

Choose a league by its CP limit
Leagues use Combat Power (CP) limits to define which Pokémon you can field. The standard limits are:
| League | Maximum CP | What the limit means |
|---|---|---|
| Great League | 1,500 CP | Each Pokémon in the party must meet the league’s CP limit. |
| Ultra League | 2,500 CP | Each Pokémon in the party must meet the league’s CP limit. |
| Master League | No CP limit | There is no maximum CP eligibility cap. |
These limits are given in Niantic’s Trainer Battle rules. The same help page describes unlock conditions for Ultra and Master League that include owning at least three Pokémon above the lower league’s CP threshold. If a league is unavailable or the in-game requirements differ, use the current Battle screen as the authority; unlock rules and interface details can change.

Build a legal three-Pokémon party
A standard GBL party has three Pokémon, and you cannot include two Pokémon of the same species in one party. A cup may add further eligibility rules, so check its details before committing to a team.
There is no guaranteed winning team: matchups depend on what the opponent brings and how each battle unfolds. Consider type matchups when choosing coverage, and think ahead about which Pokémon may need a Protect Shield. A useful team plan accounts for both favorable matchups and how you will respond when the opponent leads with a threat.

What happens during a battle
Trainers attack, build toward Charged Attacks, switch among their Pokémon and use Protect Shields to defend against Charged Attacks. Shields are limited, so spending one can preserve a Pokémon in danger but leave fewer defenses for later. Switching may help you answer a difficult matchup, but the opponent can continue attacking while a switch is underway, according to Niantic’s battle-rules guide.
How seasons, ranks and sets work
GBL runs in seasons. Ranks and ratings reset between seasons, and progression can reflect participation and/or wins; the exact progression rules may vary by season. Niantic says that once you reach a rank, you cannot lose it during the remainder of that season.

League availability rotates over a season. Niantic describes a typical sequence through Great, Ultra and Master League battles, with one league available at a time, while additional cups can bring their own eligibility rules. The actual rotation and season end date are not fixed by that general pattern. To see what is live, open the Battle screen and consult Current Season.

Before starting a set, choose either Basic Rewards or Premium Rewards. The premium track requires a Premium Battle Pass. Rewards vary with the season and can include Stardust, Pokémon encounters, Rare Candy and other items; higher season-end rank brings better end-of-season rewards, according to Niantic. A premium choice does not guarantee a particular encounter, and an encounter or reward listed for one season should not be assumed to carry over to another.

GBL matchmaking is not the same as organized competition
Ordinary GBL rank comes from matches launched through GBL’s matchmaking system. Nearby Trainer battles, friend battles and Team Leader practice do not count toward that rank. The Pokémon Championship Series also offers a separate leaderboard challenge tied to GBL, with its own participation requirements and competition window; entering it is optional for ordinary GBL play.
For the 2026 challenge, The Pokémon Company International lists a window from March 3, 2026, at 1 p.m. PST through June 2, 2026, at 1 p.m. PDT. Competitors must link Pokémon GO with Pokémon Trainer Central and opt in to Play! Pokémon. The challenge uses GBL’s blind-three format, awards Championship Points based on leaderboard placement and is limited to Pokémon Trainer Central rating zones. Check the official Pokémon GO Battle League Leaderboard Challenges page for its requirements and dates; those dates apply to that specific challenge, not the regular GBL season schedule.
