The Catching Wonders Masterwork Research rewards a Master Ball. If you obtained the research during its May 2024 offer, it does not expire, so you can work through its four stages at your own pace. Niantic has not confirmed in the cited announcement whether players who did not claim it during the event can still obtain it now.
What the research is—and whether it expires
Niantic offered the free Masterwork Research during the Catching Wonders event, which ran from May 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. to May 19, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time. The event window has ended, but it is separate from the deadline for completing research already obtained. Niantic said: “This Masterwork Research will not expire, so you’ll be able to complete it at your own pace!” Niantic’s event announcement confirms that promise.
The announcement does not establish whether an account that never obtained the research during the event can claim it now, or whether support can restore it. Check the in-game Special Research list and current official support information rather than assuming it is newly available.
Catching Wonders Masterwork Research tasks and rewards
The task counts and interim rewards below are listed in Leek Duck’s Catching Wonders event guide. Niantic confirms the research and its broad reward categories but does not enumerate every task in its event announcement.

How to plan the longer objectives
The catch objectives add up to 1,400 Pokémon across the four stages, before counting the separate goal of catching 75 in a single day. The research also asks for 150 Berries, 300 curveball throws split across Nice and Great, 25 Rocket member defeats, and 75 different species. These requirements make steady progress more practical than trying to finish everything in one session.
- Track the two seven-day objectives separately: visiting a PokéStop and catching a Pokémon each count toward their own day-based task.
- Keep the 75-catches-in-one-day target in mind while progressing through the 500-catch final task; the single-day target is not a substitute for the cumulative total.
- Prioritize variety for the 75-species objective, rather than repeatedly catching the same species.
- Egg hatches and Rocket battles may progress more slowly than ordinary catches, so check the active task counters in the Special Research screen as you play.
What a Master Ball does
Niantic describes the Master Ball as having a 100% catch rate and advises players to think carefully about using it. It is the final reward for completing this research, not an item granted merely for opening the task line. The event announcement also mentioned future opportunities to acquire more, but it did not give a date or guarantee a particular future method.

Event bonuses were temporary
These bonuses applied only during Catching Wonders, from May 14 to May 19, 2024, local time; they are not ongoing benefits of the Masterwork Research:
- 10× XP for the first Pokémon caught each day.
- 10× XP for the first PokéStop or Gym spin each day.
- 5× Stardust for the first Pokémon caught each day.
