In Pokémon GO, evolving a Pokémon does not refund regular Candy. Evolution spends the species-family Candy shown on that Pokémon’s summary screen, so your regular Candy total normally goes down. The amount varies by species, and some Pokémon also need an item, a task, a lure, Buddy walking, or a qualifying trade.
There is one important qualification: Candy XL is a separate resource. Niantic lists evolving as one possible way to obtain Candy XL, but it is a chance-based earning action, not a return of the regular Candy used for the evolution. Candy XL collection begins at Trainer level 31.

What happens to your Candy when you evolve?
For the ordinary species Candy used by the evolution button, the answer is straightforward: the game deducts the displayed cost. It does not give that regular Candy back when the evolution animation ends, and it does not award a second payment simply because a Pokémon changed form.
Niantic’s official Evolving your Pokémon guidance explains that different species require different amounts of Candy and that the required amount appears in the Pokémon’s summary. The same page notes that you still have the same number of Pokémon in your collection after an evolution. In practical terms, evolution changes one Pokémon into its next form; it does not create an additional Pokémon or replenish the resource spent.

The Candy is tied to a Pokémon family. The summary screen identifies the relevant family resource and shows the current balance beside the evolution requirement. Because the cost is species-specific, there is no universal “evolution price” that can be applied to every Pokémon.
How to check the exact evolution cost
Check the individual Pokémon rather than relying on a remembered number or an online list. The in-game summary is the authoritative screen for that Pokémon and account state.
- Open Pokémon GO and tap the Poké Ball menu.
- Choose Pokémon and select the Pokémon you are considering.
- On its summary page, look beneath the Pokémon’s details for the Evolve button.
- Read the Candy amount shown on that button and compare it with your current Candy balance.
- Review any text or icons indicating an additional requirement, then decide whether to evolve or continue collecting.
If the button is unavailable, the summary should indicate what is missing. A low Candy balance is only one possible reason; an item, task, lure, Buddy-distance condition, or trade condition can also matter.

| Resource | What it does | How evolution relates to it |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Candy | Species-family resource used for actions such as evolution. | The evolution cost is deducted from your balance. It is not returned when the evolution completes. |
| Candy XL | Separate resource used for higher CP powering-up stages. | Niantic lists evolving among possible Candy XL earning actions, but an XL award is not guaranteed for every evolution. |
Niantic’s Powering Up Pokémon help page says Candy XL collection begins at Trainer level 31. Before reaching that level, an evolution cannot be treated as a way to build an XL balance. At level 31 and above, evolving is still only one possible route and should be understood as a chance-based outcome rather than a fixed reward.
Does every evolution produce Candy XL?
No. The official description presents evolving as one of several possible ways to earn Candy XL, not as a guaranteed drop. You should therefore budget the regular Candy as though it will be spent and treat any Candy XL that appears as a possible bonus.
This distinction matters when planning a large evolution session. If you need regular Candy for a later evolution, powering-up milestone, or another family action, do not assume that an XL result will compensate for the amount deducted. Regular Candy and Candy XL have separate balances and separate uses.

Extra requirements that can appear on the Evolve button
Some Pokémon cannot be evolved by supplying Candy alone. The summary screen can show additional conditions alongside the Candy requirement.

Evolution items
Certain species require a particular evolution item in addition to Candy. If the item is absent, the button will identify that missing condition. Obtain the required item through the game’s available item sources before trying again; having enough Candy by itself does not bypass the item check.
Tasks and other qualifying actions
Some evolutions require completion of a task or another in-game condition. The summary records the relevant progress, so use it to see whether the requirement is incomplete rather than repeatedly tapping the button.
Lure-related conditions
A Pokémon may need to be within the correct lure effect when you evolve it. If the summary specifies a lure, move to the applicable PokéStop effect and verify that the condition is active before spending Candy.
Buddy walking
Some species require Buddy-related progress. Set the Pokémon as your Buddy and complete the distance or activity shown by the game, then return to its summary. The requirement is checked separately from the Candy balance.

How trade evolution changes the Candy requirement
For species that support trade evolution, a qualifying trade can remove the Candy requirement for the evolution. Niantic also explains that a Pokémon received in a trade may be eligible to evolve without Candy. A Pokémon originally caught by you can become eligible for that treatment after it is traded.
The trade condition is not a general Candy refund. It changes the requirement for an eligible Pokémon before you evolve it. If you already evolved the Pokémon by paying Candy, the spent Candy is not returned because a trade later occurred.
Trade carefully: Niantic notes that traded Pokémon cannot be traded back. Confirm that both players are willing to complete the trade and that the correct Pokémon is being exchanged. After the trade, inspect the recipient’s summary to verify whether the Candy-free evolution condition is displayed.

- Identify the resource. Confirm that the amount shown is regular family Candy, not Candy XL.
- Check the summary. Read the Evolve button and all attached conditions on the specific Pokémon.
- Decide whether the Pokémon is worth evolving now. Consider its role in your collection, any planned evolution chain, and whether you are saving for a particular task.
- Check for a qualifying trade. If the species supports trade evolution and you can safely make the trade, compare that option with paying the displayed Candy cost.
- Confirm the final prompt. Once you accept, the regular Candy cost is spent; there is no normal undo or Candy reimbursement.
- Verify the result. After the animation, check the evolved Pokémon’s summary and your Candy balance. The collection count should reflect one evolved Pokémon, not an extra Pokémon added to the total.
Common misunderstandings and what they mean
“I evolved one, so why did my Candy decrease?”
That is the expected result. The Evolve button displays a cost, and evolution deducts it. The game is not charging you twice; the decrease is the normal payment for the evolution.

“I saw Candy XL after evolving, so did the game refund my Candy?”
No. Candy XL is a separate balance. A possible XL award does not restore the regular Candy used for the evolution.
“My evolved Pokémon count did not increase.”
Evolution changes the existing Pokémon rather than adding a second one. Niantic explicitly states that you retain the same number of Pokémon in your collection after completing an evolution.
“The button says I still cannot evolve even though I have enough Candy.”
Look for a second condition. An item, task, lure, Buddy requirement, or qualifying trade may be required. The summary screen is where Pokémon GO presents those applicable conditions.
“Can I trade it back if I change my mind?”
No. Traded Pokémon cannot be traded back, so verify the Pokémon and the trade plan before confirming.
How to avoid wasting regular Candy
- Open the summary of the exact Pokémon before transferring, trading, or evolving it.
- Do not use an expected Candy XL award to justify an evolution you cannot otherwise afford.
- Complete any item, task, lure, or Buddy condition first so you can make a single informed decision about the Candy cost.
- When considering trade evolution, confirm the species is eligible and that you accept the permanent trade result.
- Keep enough family Candy for the next evolution you actually intend to perform instead of evolving every duplicate automatically.
What if you meant a different game?
“Candy” is strongly associated with Pokémon GO, so the rules above assume that game. Other Pokémon titles and unrelated games can use different evolution currencies or reward systems. If you are asking about another game, provide its exact name and platform; its evolution mechanic may not match Pokémon GO’s.
