1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPokémon GO’s repeated location-access prompts and missing Adventure Sync distance may be related, but they are not necessarily the same bug. Adventure Sync officially requires background location access plus a connection to Apple Health or Google Fit. Separately, Niantic lists a known issue in which Adventure Sync can turn off after an app update—or switch off again after you re-enable it.
That means the prompt is not, by itself, proof that Pokémon GO is malfunctioning or behaving maliciously. It may indicate that the permission needed for Adventure Sync is incomplete. If Adventure Sync keeps disabling itself or remains enabled without recording distance, you may also be dealing with the acknowledged update-related issue, a health-platform connection failure, or Android/iOS background restrictions.

The short answer
- Adventure Sync is optional and needs broader background access than ordinary foreground gameplay.
- Niantic says the feature requires location access while Pokémon GO is closed, together with Apple Health or Google Fit integration.
- Niantic’s current known-issues information acknowledges that Adventure Sync may turn off after an update or after being re-enabled.
- A repeated prompt can result from incomplete permissions, a reset setting, a health-app connection problem, battery restrictions, or the known bug.
There is no evidence that one specific current Pokémon GO update is breaking Adventure Sync for every player. A report tied similar complaints to version 381.1 in October 2025, but that is historical evidence—not proof that the same build is responsible for problems in August 2026. Recent player reports show that the complaint remains active, but they vary by phone, operating system, account, and health platform.

Why Pokémon GO asks for background location
Adventure Sync is designed to record movement while Pokémon GO is not open. To support that behavior, Niantic requires location access to remain enabled in the background. On iPhone, Niantic specifically tells players to move from Allow While Using App to Always Allow when prompted.
This permission is materially broader than foreground-only access. It is also not required for normal Pokémon GO play if you do not want to use Adventure Sync. You can continue playing with Adventure Sync disabled, although distance earned while the game is closed will not be credited through that feature.
Niantic says Adventure Sync is intended to work without significantly affecting battery life, but real-world battery impact depends on the phone, operating-system settings, health apps, and other background services. Granting background permission is therefore a choice involving both convenience and privacy.
First, check whether the update switched Adventure Sync off
Adventure Sync is available to Trainers at Level 5 and above. Check its in-game status before changing phone permissions:
- Open Pokémon GO.
- Tap Main Menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Check whether Adventure Sync is enabled.
If it is off, turn it on, close and reopen Pokémon GO, and then test it with the game fully closed. Walk a short distance naturally before deciding whether the feature works. Niantic’s known-issues page says Adventure Sync may turn off following an update and may turn off again after being re-enabled. If that happens, it is reasonable to treat the behavior as a current app issue rather than assuming you selected the wrong permission.

Do not expect previously uncredited distance to appear simply because you repaired the setting. Re-enabling Adventure Sync does not guarantee recovery of activity the game failed to record.
iPhone: restore the permissions Adventure Sync needs
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Select Pokémon GO.
- Choose Always if you want Adventure Sync to work while the app is closed.
- Enable Precise Location if location accuracy is also a problem.
Depending on the iOS version and the permission history on the phone, iOS may initially offer only While Using the App. Niantic says you may need to select that option first, use Pokémon GO, close it, and then check whether iOS offers the background option later. If Always never appears, Screen Time restrictions, a device-management profile, or other privacy controls may be preventing the change.
Next, check Apple Health:
- Open the Health app.
- Open the connected apps or data-source settings.
- Confirm that Pokémon GO is listed and authorized.
Apple Health recording steps does not guarantee that Pokémon GO will immediately import the distance. If Health has data but the game does not, the likely problem is the Pokémon GO–Health authorization, the Adventure Sync state, or the update-related issue—not necessarily the phone’s motion sensor.
Permission prompts can also return after reinstalling Pokémon GO, moving to a new iPhone, or restoring a device from backup. Those events can require authorization again.
Android: check location, activity access, and battery controls
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and version, but the general path is:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select Pokémon GO.
- Tap Permissions.
- Open Location and allow the level required for background operation. Some phones call this Allow all the time.
- Enable Physical activity or Activity recognition if your device exposes that permission.
Some Android phones show the background-location choice only after foreground location access has already been granted. Manufacturer-specific battery tools may also stop the game or health service from running in the background.
During testing, check the battery settings for Pokémon GO, Google Fit, and any relevant health-data service. Disable battery optimization or background restrictions for those apps where your phone provides such controls. Also check for vendor features such as sleeping apps, deep sleep, automatic app suspension, or aggressive battery saver modes.
Then open Google Fit or the supported health platform and confirm Pokémon GO is listed as a connected app. Pokémon Support gives the Google Fit path as Settings → Google → Google Fit → Connected apps and devices.
Niantic’s older troubleshooting documentation also notes a specific Android 10 behavior: disabling Activity Recognition only in Android settings may not fully disable Adventure Sync; the feature should be switched off inside Pokémon GO itself when that is the goal.
Check the health-platform connection
Adventure Sync does not automatically import every step counter or every workout record. Niantic says it requires a connection to Apple Health or Google Fit, and Pokémon Support recommends checking that Pokémon GO remains listed as an authorized source.

On iPhone
Open Apple Health and check its Sources or connected-app section. Confirm Pokémon GO is present and still authorized to share the relevant activity data.
On Android
Open Google Fit’s connected-app settings and confirm Pokémon GO is listed. Android health-data systems and manufacturer integrations vary, so the exact service available on your phone may differ.
Test with naturally recorded movement. Niantic says manually entered steps or fitness data do not count toward Adventure Sync. A health app showing manually added distance therefore does not demonstrate that Pokémon GO should award it.
Likewise, if the health platform itself records no activity, Pokémon GO cannot import data that does not exist. If the health app records movement but the game does not, check authorization, background permissions, battery restrictions, and the in-game toggle before blaming the sensor.
If Adventure Sync keeps switching itself off
Repeatedly losing the setting matches the issue Niantic lists in its release notes and known-issues information. Use this escalation order:

- Re-enable Adventure Sync in Settings → General inside Pokémon GO.
- Close and reopen the game.
- Confirm the setting is still enabled.
- Check location and health-platform permissions again.
- Disable battery-saving restrictions during the test.
- Restart the phone.
- On Android, try Settings → Advanced Settings → Refresh Game Data.
- After refreshing, check Adventure Sync again because Niantic warns that this action may untoggle it.
- Record the Pokémon GO version, phone model, operating-system version, and date of the failure.
- Contact Niantic through in-app support if the setting continues to turn itself off.
Also verify that automatic date, time, and time zone are enabled. Incorrect time settings can interfere with location- and activity-based services.
Update Pokémon GO through the official app store if an update is available. Reinstalling should not be the first step: it can reset permissions and health connections, requires reconfiguration, and is not a guaranteed fix for the known issue.
Should you grant “Always” access?
That depends on whether you want Adventure Sync.
| Choice | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Adventure Sync enabled | Background progress toward Eggs, Buddy Candy, and weekly walking rewards. | Broader location access and a connection between Pokémon GO and a supported health platform. |
| Disable Adventure Sync | No background location permission requirement and no repeated Adventure Sync prompts. | Distance while Pokémon GO is closed will not be credited through Adventure Sync. |
To stop the prompts without granting background access, uncheck Adventure Sync in Pokémon GO and then restrict Pokémon GO’s location permission to the level you prefer. Ordinary gameplay and Adventure Sync are separate choices; you do not have to grant “Always” access merely to open and play the game.

What the symptoms do—and do not—prove
- A prompt does not prove malicious tracking. Background location is a documented requirement for Adventure Sync, which is optional.
- A health-app step count does not guarantee Pokémon GO credit. Authorization, timing, the in-game toggle, and background restrictions can still block synchronization.
- Version 381.1 is not proof of the current cause. It was associated with complaints reported in October 2025, but the available evidence does not establish it as the active August 2026 build or universal cause.
- Community reports do not establish a universal outage. Recent reports show recurring problems, but device and account configurations differ.
- “While Using the App” may not be enough. Niantic’s documented iOS instructions require the background “Always” option for Adventure Sync while the app is closed.
- Force-closing is not a useful success test. Test by closing Pokémon GO normally, allowing the health platform to record naturally generated activity, and checking the result afterward.
The most useful diagnosis is to separate the layers: the in-game Adventure Sync switch, the operating-system permissions, the Apple Health or Google Fit connection, and background battery controls. Fixing one layer does not automatically repair the others.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Pokémon GO without granting background location access?
Yes. Adventure Sync is optional. You can leave it disabled and use Pokémon GO normally, although distance recorded while the game is closed will not count through Adventure Sync.
Why is distance visible in Apple Health or Google Fit but not in Pokémon GO?
The health platform may be recording activity while Pokémon GO is no longer authorized, Adventure Sync is off, background access is restricted, or the app is affected by the known update-related issue. Manually entered activity does not count.
Does reinstalling Pokémon GO guarantee a fix?
No. Reinstalling can reset permissions and health connections, but it is not a confirmed universal solution and should not be the first troubleshooting step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is Adventure Sync broken only on iPhone or only on Android?
The reported problems are not established as exclusive to either platform. iOS and Android have different permission, health-platform, and battery-management behavior, so the correct fix depends on the device.
