Mega Tyranitar is a Rock- and Dark-type raid attacker with a double weakness to Fighting-type attacks. To Mega Evolve your own Tyranitar, collect Tyranitar Mega Energy and use the option on its summary page or in a Raid Battle lobby. The mechanics below reflect Niantic Help Center guidance accessed October 8, 2026; Mega Tyranitar’s move list and catch CP ranges come from The Pokémon Company’s July 25, 2023 guide, so they should not be treated as a live event notice or current move ranking.
What is Mega Tyranitar weak against?
Mega Tyranitar is Rock/Dark type. The Pokémon Company’s July 2023 raid guide lists Water-, Grass-, Fighting-, Ground-, Bug-, Steel-, and Fairy-type attacks as effective against it. Fighting is the standout: Mega Tyranitar is doubly vulnerable to Fighting-type attacks, making Fighting-type damage the first choice when building a raid team. The Pokémon Company’s dated guide advises using Pokémon with Fighting attacks to deal damage quickly.
When several suitable Pokémon are available, favor ones with strong overall stats and high CP, as the guide recommends. It also describes same-type attack bonus as adding 20% damage in the situation covered by that 2023 guide; treat that figure as the source’s dated explanation, not a newly verified mechanic update.
What are the best counters for Mega Tyranitar?
Build around Fighting-type attacks, ideally using a Pokémon with both a Fighting-type Fast Attack and Charged Attack. This aligns with the double weakness and the official guide’s advice to prioritize Fighting damage. If your available team cannot make that work, Water, Grass, Ground, Bug, Steel, and Fairy attacks are also identified as effective in the same July 2023 guide.

How do I Mega Evolve Tyranitar?
Niantic says an eligible Pokémon can be Mega Evolved from its summary page after you have enough Mega Energy. You can also Mega Evolve from a Raid Battle lobby. The initial Mega Evolution of a particular Pokémon costs more energy; subsequent Mega Evolutions of that same Pokémon cost less over time. Niantic’s Mega Evolution instructions describe these routes and the reduced repeat cost.

- Collect enough Tyranitar Mega Energy.
- Open your eligible Tyranitar’s summary page and choose the Mega Evolution option, or use the Mega Evolution option in a Raid Battle lobby.
- Confirm the energy cost shown in the game. The cost falls for repeat Mega Evolutions of that same Pokémon over time.
Mega Evolution is temporary and lasts eight hours, according to Niantic’s explanation of Mega Evolution. Only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active for a Trainer at a time. Mega Evolution improves battle performance and provides other benefits, but it does not change the Pokémon’s Fast or Charged Attacks.
How do I get Tyranitar Mega Energy?
Mega Energy is specific to a Pokémon species, so energy for another species will not Mega Evolve Tyranitar. Niantic lists Mega Raids, certain research tasks, and sometimes walking with a Buddy from an evolutionary line that has previously Mega Evolved as ways to earn it. See Niantic’s Mega Energy guidance for the general sources.

Winning a Mega Raid awards Mega Energy and gives you an opportunity to catch the boss in its regular form. The amount of energy awarded depends on how quickly the raid is won, according to Niantic’s Mega Raid information. That makes faster clears useful for earning more energy from a raid, but a win is still required.
How Mega Tyranitar supports a raid team
A Mega-Evolved Pokémon improves its own raid performance and gives attack bonuses to other Trainers’ Pokémon in the raid. Allies receive an additional bonus when their attack type matches the active Mega Pokémon’s type; if multiple Mega Pokémon are present, the effect does not stack beyond the highest applicable bonus. Niantic explains these rules in Using a Mega-Evolved Pokémon.

- Does not use batteries
For Mega Tyranitar, that makes Rock- and Dark-type attacks on allies relevant to its team utility as well as its own damage. The Pokémon Company’s guide also describes a stronger bonus for allies whose attack types match the active Mega Pokémon’s type in its Mega Evolution overview.
