The first reveal trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduced a Lumiose City adventure built around urban redevelopment, real-time battles, wild zones and Mega Evolution. Nintendo announced the game for late 2025 on 28 February 2025; that was the original release window, not its current status. The official game hub now lists it as available, and the official trailer page cautions that some footage was from a product in development and that gameplay may vary.
What did the Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer reveal?
Nintendo’s 28 February 2025 announcement set the story in Lumiose City, where a redevelopment plan aims to make the city a place for people and Pokémon. The announcement describes the city as having more greenery and cutting-edge facilities than it did in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. The player stays at Hotel Z and explores constructed “wild zones,” where Pokémon can be battled and caught.
The official trailer archive, dated 22 July 2025, links to a trailer and an explainer. Its footage caveat matters: screenshots and video were from a product under development, some gameplay images were from the Nintendo Switch 2 version, and actual gameplay may vary. Trailer visuals therefore should not be treated as a guarantee that every system or final version will look or play identically. The Pokémon Company’s trailer page provides the footage and caveat.
Can you run across rooftops?
The trailer provides visual evidence of rooftop movement in Lumiose City, which is why rooftop running is associated with the game’s reveal. The official announcement text confirms the city setting, but does not describe a complete rooftop-traversal system or specify its mechanics. It is safest to say the video shows rooftop movement, rather than infer details about how freely or extensively players can traverse rooftops.

How do battles work?
Nintendo described battles as real-time: Trainers and Pokémon move during combat, and Pokémon perform moves when commanded. The announcement says players need to consider when to swap Pokémon, when to use moves, how long moves take to launch and the area each move affects. Nintendo presented this real-time approach as a first for the Pokémon series.
Which Pokémon can you choose as a partner?
The announcement names Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile as possible partner Pokémon at the start of the adventure. It also identifies Mega Evolution as an important battle mechanic. Only certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve; the reveal describes a Trainer’s Key Stone resonating with a Pokémon’s Mega Stone.
