Pokémon GO’s Rediscover Kanto Special Research has five steps and no expiration date. Its tasks include catching Kanto Pokémon, using Berries, and completing Buddy activities; rewards range from starter encounters and items to XP, Stardust, and an Egg Incubator. The final step requires 151 Kanto-origin Pokémon catches, but not 151 newly registered Pokédex entries.
Can you still complete Rediscover Kanto Special Research?
Yes. Niantic made the research free for all Trainers when the Rediscover Kanto event began on April 22, 2024, and says Special Research does not expire. The event itself ran from April 22 at 10:00 a.m. to May 9, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. PDT; its end did not remove the quest deadline-free completion opportunity. Niantic’s event announcement confirms that the research can be completed at your own pace.

What counts toward the Kanto catch tasks?
The quest wording is to catch Pokémon originally discovered in Kanto. It does not require catching 151 species that are new to your Pokédex: repeat catches of Kanto-origin Pokémon count toward the stated catch total.

Rediscover Kanto also highlighted biome-focused exploration, with some Kanto Pokémon associated with particular environments. Niantic’s announcement notes that Pokémon can appear outside their associated biomes during some seasons or special events, so a biome is not an exclusive guarantee. The campaign overview gives examples including Bulbasaur and other Kanto Pokémon in forest biomes, and Squirtle, Psyduck, Seel, and Magikarp in beach biomes.
