Electric and Water attackers are useful alternatives. During the fight, Shadow Ho-Oh can become enraged; raid participants can use Purified Gems to lower its boosted attack and defense. Beat the boss to earn Premier Balls and attempt the catch—winning does not guarantee it.
Shadow Ho-Oh’s current raid availability is not confirmed here. Check the in-game raid schedule or an official event announcement before planning around a specific date.

Shadow Ho-Oh’s weaknesses and best attack types
Ho-Oh is Fire/Flying. Rock attacks exploit both types and are therefore the strongest general choice. Electric and Water attacks are also super effective, but they do not hit both of Ho-Oh’s types at once.
- Rock: The priority. Build a team around Pokémon with strong Rock moves where your roster allows.
- Electric: A useful alternative, particularly if you have well-powered Electric attackers.
- Water: Another effective option when your best Rock or Electric choices are unavailable or underpowered.
Partly Cloudy weather boosts Rock attacks; Rainy weather boosts Electric and Water attacks, according to Pokémon GO Hub’s February 23, 2026 Shadow Ho-Oh guide.

Best Shadow Ho-Oh raid counters
Prioritize the strongest Rock attackers you can field with suitable Rock-type moves. Pokémon GO Hub’s February 2026 guide recommends Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Tyranitar, Mega Diancie, Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Tyrantrum, and Shadow Tyranitar. Its database lists Mega Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge, Mega Aerodactyl with Rock Throw and Rock Slide, and Mega Diancie with Rock Throw and Rock Slide near the top of its counter rankings.
| Counter | Suggested Rock moves | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Mega Tyranitar | Smack Down and Stone Edge | You have it powered up and can use the listed Rock moves. |
| Mega Aerodactyl | Rock Throw and Rock Slide | It is one of your strongest available Rock attackers. |
| Mega Diancie | Rock Throw and Rock Slide | You can field it with the recommended Rock moves. |
| Shadow Rhyperior | Use suitable Rock-type moves | You have a powered-up Shadow version ready for the raid. |
| Shadow Tyrantrum | Use suitable Rock-type moves | It is a stronger fit for your roster than your other available counters. |
| Shadow Tyranitar | Use suitable Rock-type moves | You can bring it with appropriate Rock moves and sufficient power. |
These are recommendations, not a guaranteed ranking for every account. Pokémon GO Hub’s dated guide and its database do not place every counter in the same order; simulation assumptions, updates, your Pokémon’s level and moves, and the boss’s moves can all affect which option performs best. Compare your actual roster rather than treating a single ranking as universal.

- Spin PokéStops or throw Poké Balls automatically in Pokémon GO for hands-free gameplay (and Great Balls and Ultra Balls can be thrown too!)
As a practical selection rule, favor a powered-up Rock attacker with Rock moves over a nominally top-ranked Pokémon that is underpowered or lacks the relevant moves. If you need to fill gaps, use your strongest available Electric or Water attackers.
How Shadow Raid enragement and Purified Gems work
Shadow Raid bosses can become enraged during battle, increasing their attack and defense. The official Pokémon GO announcement explains that Purified Gems temporarily reduce those boosted stats; using gems at the same time stacks their effects, and enough gems subdue the boss. The in-game gem button appears after the Shadow Pokémon becomes enraged.

Prepare gems before entering and coordinate their use with the group once the boss enrages. Each trainer can carry up to 10 Purified Gems and use up to five in one Shadow Raid, according to the Pokémon GO Help Center’s Shadow Raids page. Their effects stack across trainers, so communicate rather than assuming another player has already used enough.
Collecting and making Purified Gems
- Battle Team GO Rocket to collect Shadow Shards.
- Collect four Shadow Shards, then refine them into one Purified Gem. The Help Center’s Purified Gems instructions describe this conversion.
- Before the raid, check that you have gems available. Your inventory can hold up to 10, and you can use up to five during a raid.
- When Ho-Oh becomes enraged, tap the gem button and use gems in coordination with your teammates.
How many trainers do you need?
There is no party size that guarantees a win. Trainer levels, counter strength and moves, the boss’s moves, weather, and coordination all matter. Pokémon GO Hub’s February 2026 guide suggests four or more trainers using maxed top counters and Purified Gems, or eight to ten or more when trainers are lower-level or have less suitable counters. Treat those figures as third-party planning guidance, not an official minimum or a promise of success.

How to catch Shadow Ho-Oh after the raid
- Defeat the Shadow Raid boss. Shadow Raids take place at gyms occupied by Team GO Rocket and require a Raid Pass; the official announcement says Remote Raid Passes cannot be used to join them.
- After a successful raid, use the Premier Balls awarded for the encounter to attempt to catch Ho-Oh. The number of balls can depend on raid performance.
- Make your throws carefully and keep using the awarded Premier Balls while the encounter lasts. A victory grants a catch encounter, not a guaranteed catch.
The catch flow uses Premier Balls awarded in-game. The cited official information does not establish a separate physical device as a way to throw these raid balls.
