Keep Pokémon that serve a clear purpose for you, transfer only after checking their protection status, and spend Stardust or Candy only after appraisal and goal-setting. There is no single species list or appraisal threshold that is correct for every Pokémon GO player. A collector, a raid specialist, a GO Battle League player and a player who mainly wants free storage can make different, equally sensible choices.
Transfer is permanent. Appraisal gives you information but cannot be improved by evolving or powering up. Power-ups increase CP and HP while consuming Stardust and evolution-family Candy. When storage is full, the official options are to transfer Pokémon or buy a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop; the current capacity, upgrade size and price must be checked in your live game.

Start with the decision, not the storage number
Storage management becomes safer when every Pokémon has a reason to remain in your collection. Before selecting anything, decide which of these purposes matter to you:
- Collection: regional forms, costumes, Shinies, Lucky Pokémon, event memories or personal favorites.
- Battle use: Pokémon you may use in raids, Gyms or a GO Battle League format.
- Evolution plans: Pokémon being saved for an evolution, a move requirement or a future event.
- Trading: duplicates or species that another player may want.
- Resources: Pokémon you are comfortable converting into Candy to support another investment.
These are decision prompts rather than official rules. A low-appraisal Pokémon can still be valuable because it is rare, has a useful move, completes a collection or has personal meaning. Conversely, a high-appraisal duplicate may be unnecessary if it has no role in your plans.

How appraisal should guide your choices
What the appraisal screen tells you
The in-game appraisal presents a star rating out of three and separate assessments for Attack, Defense and HP. It is the game’s way of showing a Pokémon’s underlying individual values without requiring an outside calculator.
To review one, open your Pokémon list, select the Pokémon and choose the appraisal option from its menu. Record the result before transferring anything or committing resources. If you are comparing several candidates of the same species, appraisal helps you see which has the stronger stated attributes.
What appraisal does not tell you
A star rating is not a universal keep-or-transfer command. The best attributes can differ by battle format, and collection value is unrelated to the appraisal stars. Treat the screen as one input alongside moves, species, level, availability, role and your own priorities.

Evolving or powering up does not improve appraisal. If a Pokémon has a particular rating before an evolution or power-up, those actions do not raise that rating. The source material specifically notes that purifying a Shadow Pokémon does improve its appraisal, but purification is a separate strategic decision and should not be treated as a general storage shortcut.
A practical keep, transfer or invest framework

Favoriting is useful as a visual safeguard, but it is not a substitute for reviewing a Pokémon’s purpose. A favorite cannot be transferred until you remove that protection, which creates an additional confirmation point.

How to transfer Pokémon safely
Transferring frees a storage slot and gives you Candy. The Pokémon GO Help Center warns that the action cannot be reversed:
“You’ll receive Candy in exchange for transferring a Pokémon, but be careful: you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”

- Review its purpose. Check whether it is a collection piece, a planned evolution, a battle candidate, a trade reserve or a personal favorite.
- Open appraisal. Note the star rating and Attack, Defense and HP assessments before deciding.
- Check transfer protections. Make sure it is not your active Buddy, a favorite or currently defending a Gym.
- Review the selected Pokémon again. Confirm the species, form, costume and any other detail that would make the loss regrettable.
- Choose Transfer and confirm. Treat the final confirmation as permanent; there is no recovery process after completion.
An active Buddy, a favorited Pokémon and a Pokémon defending a Gym cannot be transferred individually. If the transfer control is unavailable, check these three states first.
Bulk transfer safeguards
Bulk selection is convenient for genuine duplicates, but it has stricter protections. The official help material says that Shiny Pokémon, Lucky Pokémon and Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon cannot be bulk transferred. Bulk transfer of Legendary or Mythical Pokémon requires the relevant setting to be enabled, and some specific Legendary and Mythical Pokémon cannot be selected at all.

For that reason, use bulk transfer only after filtering for ordinary duplicates and checking the selection list. A fast multi-select session is not a safe place to decide whether a rare form matters to you.
What to do when Pokémon storage is full
An orange dot on the main menu can indicate that Pokémon storage or the Item Bag is full. The official support guidance identifies two ways to address Pokémon storage: transfer Pokémon or purchase an expansion in the in-game Shop.

The official source does not establish a current maximum Pokémon-storage count, upgrade increment or regional price. Those values can change with the game and location, so check the live Shop instead of relying on an old guide or a number copied from another region.
When powering up is worth the resources
A power-up raises a Pokémon’s CP and HP. It consumes Stardust and Candy from that Pokémon’s evolution family. As a Pokémon becomes stronger, the required costs can increase. Higher power-up levels also require Candy XL.
Understand the resources
- Stardust: a shared resource used across species, so spending it on one Pokémon reduces what is available for other projects.
- Regular Candy: tied to the Pokémon’s evolution family rather than being universally interchangeable.
- Candy XL: required for higher power-up levels. The official help material says players can begin collecting it at level 31.
Candy XL can come from several activities, including catching, transferring, hatching, evolving, trading, feeding Pokémon in Gyms and walking with a Buddy. The exact return from an activity is not a reason to power up immediately; first decide whether the Pokémon deserves the long-term investment.

Use a purpose-first spending test
- Name the intended use: a raid attacker, a Gym defender, a specific battle format or another concrete role.
- Compare it with the other candidates you already own for that role.
- Check appraisal, moves and current strength, then estimate whether the Stardust, regular Candy and possible Candy XL cost fits your resources.
- Power up only after accepting that the resources are committed to this Pokémon and cannot be reclaimed as Stardust.
Appraisal does not improve when you power up. The point of a power-up is greater CP and HP, not a better star rating.
Should you evolve before powering up?
Neither evolving nor powering up improves appraisal, so appraisal should be reviewed before both actions. The correct order depends on what you are trying to verify.
- If you are checking potential: appraise first, then decide whether the Pokémon is worth keeping.
- If you need to inspect the evolved form’s moves or role: evolve only when you accept the evolution cost and have a reason to evaluate that result.
- If resources are limited: avoid powering up a Pokémon merely because it can be powered up; reserve Stardust and Candy for a defined use.
The available official guidance does not establish one universal rule that evolution must always precede power-ups or vice versa. Timing is therefore a goal-based choice, not an appraisal trick.

Collectors
Prioritize forms, costumes, Shinies, Lucky Pokémon, event memories and anything that would be difficult or impossible for you to replace. Storage upgrades may be more appropriate than aggressive transfers when your collection itself is the goal.

Keep candidates with a clearly defined battle role, then compare appraisal, moves and resources before investing. Do not retain every duplicate solely because it has a high star rating; retain the number your teams actually need.

GO Battle League players
Judge a Pokémon against the rules of the format you play rather than assuming that the highest star rating is always best. Appraisal supplies Attack, Defense and HP information, but it does not by itself establish a Pokémon’s ranking in a particular league.
Storage-first players
Start with ordinary duplicates that have no planned use. Review them in batches, but keep rare categories out of bulk selection until you have checked them individually.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I will transfer it now and recover it later.”
You cannot recover a transferred Pokémon. Fix this by delaying the action whenever you are uncertain and by performing a final species, form and status check before confirmation.
“Powering up will improve its appraisal.”
It will not. Power-ups raise CP and HP only; appraisal remains the same. Appraise before spending resources.
“A three-star Pokémon is automatically the one to keep.”
Stars do not account for every collection or battle consideration. Use appraisal with your intended role, moves, availability and personal value.
“Bulk transfer is safe for every duplicate.”
Shiny, Lucky and Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon are protected from bulk transfer, while Legendary and Mythical Pokémon have additional settings and selection restrictions. When in doubt, transfer individually.
“An old storage-cap guide gives the current price.”
The current cap, upgrade increment and regional Shop price are not fixed in the available official guidance. Verify the live in-game offer before budgeting for more space.

- Open storage when you are not rushed, rather than during a limited-time event or a battle.
- Sort or filter for obvious duplicates and review rare or protected categories separately.
- Appraise candidates before any Stardust or Candy investment.
- Mark planned evolutions, trades, battle projects and collection pieces so they are not mistaken for disposable duplicates.
- Transfer only after checking active Buddy, favorite and Gym-defender status.
- When the remaining collection still exceeds your needs, compare the permanent cost of transferring with the retention benefit of an in-game storage upgrade.
- Power up only the Pokémon that has survived the keep decision and has a defined job.
This process keeps storage decisions separate from investment decisions: first determine what deserves a slot, then determine what deserves resources.
