Use a regular TM when the move you need is in the Pokémon’s current standard move pool; save an Elite TM for an eligible move that makes a real difference to a Pokémon you expect to use. There is no best moveset for every situation: PvP league and team role, raid target, and Max Battle build all change what is useful. Check the Pokémon’s in-game move list and a current format- or boss-specific reference before spending an Elite TM.
Regular TM or Elite TM: which should you use?
A Fast TM changes a Fast Attack, while a Charged TM changes a Charged Attack. Regular TMs teach a move at random from the Pokémon’s available standard moves. Elite TMs let you choose from eligible moves, including some attacks that were previously available only during events such as Community Days or Raid Days. A move being called “legacy” by players does not by itself mean it is powerful or currently eligible for an Elite TM. The final check is the list shown when you use the item. Niantic says Elite TMs may be available through limited opportunities, including possible Shop offers during special events and end-of-season GO Battle League rewards at high rank; availability is not guaranteed.

For Charged Attacks, Niantic advises balancing moves that can be used more often against stronger moves that take longer to prepare. Their energy costs can differ between Trainer Battles and Gyms or Raids, so a move’s value depends on the mode. A second Charged Attack is a separate Stardust-and-Candy unlock, not a TM change; it can provide coverage or shield pressure in PvP. If a Pokémon already has two Charged Attacks, the Elite TM flow asks which one to replace. Niantic’s Elite TM explanation covers move choice and limits, while its Fast Attacks & Charged Attacks guide explains the basic move system.
How to decide whether a TM change is worth it
- Name the job. Decide whether the Pokémon is for a particular PvP league or cup, raid boss, Gym, Rocket battle, or Max Battle. A moveset recommendation without a format or target is incomplete.
- Identify the roster gap. Ask whether the change improves a team role, covers a matchup or type, or gives the Pokémon a useful attack for the encounter. A move’s rarity alone is not a reason to spend an Elite TM.
- Check how the move is obtained. See whether it is in the ordinary pool, appears as an eligible Elite TM option, requires an event window, or needs a different special method.
- Compare against the alternative. Look at current league rankings or the specific raid target, and decide whether the improvement over an ordinary move is meaningful for your team.
- Consider whether you will use it. If the Pokémon is not built for a relevant role or will sit unused, keep the limited Elite TM for a better candidate or wait for an event.
PvPoke says its rankings are best-guess performance scores based on matchup simulations, not guarantees. Its method considers roles such as lead, closer, switch, charger, and attacker, as well as move damage, energy cost, and stat changes. A move that performs well in one role or matchup can be less useful in another. Read PvPoke’s rankings methodology and current analysis alongside the league or cup you actually play.

Moves to investigate for PvP
The examples below come from PoGoMate’s PvP guide dated September 28, 2026. They are candidates to check for a particular team, not a universal ranking of Elite TM investments. DexJourney’s current ranking examples offer a second reference for some of these configurations, but league rankings and move access can change.
- Great League Melmetal: Double Iron Bash is listed as an Elite Charged TM move. DexJourney’s open-league example pairs it with Dynamic Punch.
- Great League Altaria: Moonblast is listed as an Elite Charged TM move; the ranking example uses Dragon Breath, Moonblast, and Flamethrower.
- Ultra League Tinkaton: Gigaton Hammer is listed as an Elite Charged TM recommendation.
- Ultra League Virizion: Sacred Sword is listed as an Elite Charged TM recommendation.
- Master League Metagross: Meteor Mash is listed as an Elite Charged TM option, and Shadow Claw appears among the Elite Fast TM examples. Check the league ranking and the Pokémon’s intended team role before choosing a configuration.
- Master League Xerneas: Geomancy appears among the Elite Fast TM examples.
These examples are drawn from PoGoMate’s legacy and exclusive moves guide and, for the Melmetal and Altaria configurations, DexJourney’s league and raid examples. Treat them as starting points: the team, matchup, and current league matter more than the label “best.”

Moves to investigate for raids
PoGoMate’s raid-oriented list, dated September 20, 2026, includes Groudon with Precipice Blades, Metagross with Meteor Mash, Kyogre with Origin Pulse, Mewtwo with Psystrike or Shadow Ball, Rayquaza with Breaking Swipe, Garchomp with Earth Power, Swampert with Hydro Cannon, and Charizard with Blast Burn. These are move examples, not counter teams for a named raid boss.
For a raid, evaluate the boss you are facing. Type effectiveness, the boss’s moves, weather, Party Power, Mega boosts, and the attacker’s survivability affect the choice. DexJourney describes its raid table as neutral same-type move-pair estimates rather than boss-specific counter advice. Check the actual encounter and use a boss-specific reference such as DexJourney’s raid material before using an Elite TM.

Max Battles need a separate Fast Attack check
A raid-oriented Charged Attack recommendation does not settle a Dynamax build. Niantic says a Pokémon’s Max Attack type varies with its individual Fast Attack and can be changed with a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM. Check the Max Battle role and the Max Attack type you need, not only the Pokémon’s ordinary raid moveset. Niantic’s Dynamax and Max Particles guide explains this interaction.
Special moves may need more than a TM
Some event or special moves have acquisition rules that differ from ordinary TM use, and those rules can be limited to announced windows or change. PoGoMate’s current guide says Spacial Rend and Roar of Time are Elite Charged TM options only during announced windows; Dragon Ascent requires a Meteorite; and Kyurem’s Ice Burn or Freeze Shock involves fusion conversions with Glaciate. Check the live in-game option and event terms before evolving, fusing, or using a rare item. PoGoMate’s guide describes these routes, but the game’s current availability is decisive.

Shadow Pokémon have an additional restriction: Frustration must be removed during an eligible event before evolving for an exclusive Charged Attack. Unlocking a second Charged Attack does not bypass Frustration. Purifying changes the investment and removes the Shadow bonus, so purification should not be treated as a shortcut solely to obtain a move.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to keep the Elite TM
- The Pokémon will not be used in a mode or matchup where the move helps.
- The candidate is described as legacy, but the move is not currently shown as Elite-TM-eligible.
- A normal move already meets the team’s need, so the upgrade is marginal.
- The move depends on a special event, item, evolution, or fusion route that you have not verified.
- You have not checked the current league, cup, or raid boss and its relevant conditions.
