You can start collecting Candy XL in Pokémon GO at Trainer Level 31. Catching, transferring, hatching, evolving, trading, feeding Pokémon at a Gym, and walking with a Buddy can each give Candy XL, but none is a guaranteed drop. Candy XL belongs to a Pokémon’s evolutionary line and is used for high-level power-ups.
What Candy XL does
Candy XL is a species-family resource: Candy XL for one Pokémon evolutionary line cannot power up a different line. At high power-up levels, Pokémon require Candy XL alongside Stardust and regular Candy. The Power Up screen shows the costs for the Pokémon you select; Niantic does not provide a single cost that applies to every Pokémon.
Niantic’s Powering Up Pokémon help page says Candy XL becomes available when your Trainer reaches level 31.
Ways to get Candy XL
Once eligible, you may receive Candy XL through these actions. Treat them as possible sources, not guaranteed rewards:

- Transfer Pokémon: Transferring can produce Candy XL, but it is still a chance-based source.
- Hatch eggs: Hatching may award Candy XL for the hatched Pokémon’s line.
- Evolve Pokémon: Evolving is another possible source.
- Trade Pokémon: Trades may produce Candy XL.
- Feed Pokémon at a Gym: Feeding Pokémon at a Gym can also yield it.
- Walk with a Buddy: Walking with your Buddy is a possible source for its evolutionary line.
Because the official guidance gives no rates or method-by-method amounts, it does not establish which activity is fastest. Choose actions that fit your play and target the evolutionary line whose Candy XL you need.
Convert Candy or use Rare Candy XL
Regular Candy can be converted into Candy XL, although Niantic’s cited general guidance does not state a conversion ratio. Check the in-game conversion prompt for the current terms before confirming.

Rare Candy XL is a separate flexible item. Give it to a Pokémon to turn it into Candy XL for that Pokémon’s evolutionary line. Niantic describes the item in Types of Items and their Effects. Because the item is assigned to a selected Pokémon, use it on the line you want to power up.
Check a Pokémon’s power-up cost
To see whether you have enough resources and what a specific Pokémon needs, open that Pokémon’s details and select Power Up. The game displays the Stardust and Candy XL costs for that Pokémon before you confirm. The exact cost varies; the interface is the relevant source for the selected Pokémon.

What the official guidance does not specify
Niantic’s general help pages do not provide precise Candy XL drop rates, a regular-Candy conversion ratio, a universal power-up cost table, or current event bonuses. Event-specific rewards may differ, so consult the announcement for an active event rather than assuming its bonuses apply generally.
