Choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus if you want to study wild Pokémon, sneak up on them, catch them directly, and build your Pokédex through research tasks. Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want a seamless open-world journey across Paldea, centered on the familiar trainer adventure and with an optional two-part expansion. Both are Nintendo Switch RPGs; the better fit depends on which style of play sounds more appealing.

Which Pokémon game should you play?

If you want… Start with… Because…
To watch wild Pokémon, sneak closer, and throw Poké Balls directly Pokémon Legends: Arceus Observing Pokémon and catching them in the field are central to its gameplay.
Repeated research tasks and Pokédex progress to drive your exploration Pokémon Legends: Arceus Research builds Pokédex entries and contributes to team rank and access to areas.
A connected region where towns and wilderness meet without borders Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet Paldea’s towns blend into the surrounding wild areas, with Pokémon appearing across the region.
A traditional trainer adventure in an open-world structure Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet They retain battling wild Pokémon to catch them as a central series activity.
More areas, characters, rivals, and Pokémon beyond the base adventure Scarlet or Violet, with its expansion considered separately The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero adds two parts of content, but requires the corresponding base game.

What makes Legends: Arceus different?

Legends: Arceus takes place in Hisui, an earlier-era Sinnoh. You join the Galaxy Team’s Survey Corps to explore, catch, and research Pokémon as the region works toward its first Pokédex. The Pokémon Company describes it as a journey that adds action and RPG elements to familiar series gameplay (official game overview).

Watching and catching Pokémon is the main loop

In the field, you can observe a Pokémon’s behavior, approach with care, aim, and throw a Poké Ball. Some encounters move seamlessly into battle when you throw a Poké Ball holding one of your Pokémon near a wild one; battling can also make certain Pokémon easier to catch. This makes the act of catching more hands-on than simply selecting a wild Pokémon and beginning a standard battle (official gameplay details).

Research means more than catching one of each

Pokédex progress comes from completing research tasks, which can involve repeated study of a species rather than recording a single capture. Research contributes to your team rank and access to additional areas. Base camps give you places to rest and craft, while special ride Pokémon help you travel across land, water, and air (official gameplay details).

Pokémon Legends: Arceus - US Version
  • Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
  • Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
  • Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
  • Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

Its battles use action order and move styles

Rather than relying only on a conventional one-action-per-turn sequence, battles account for stats and other factors that affect action order and how many actions a Pokémon may receive. Agile Style can bring a Pokémon’s next action sooner at reduced power; Strong Style raises a move’s power but lowers action speed. If you want the traditional battle flow above all, this difference is worth knowing before you choose (official gameplay details).

What makes Scarlet and Violet different?

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet take place in Paldea. Their open world connects towns and wilderness without borders, and Pokémon appear across its varied environments. The games keep the familiar goal of battling wild Pokémon to catch them, while placing that trainer journey in a freely explorable region. The official overview describes the towns as blending “seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders” (official game overview).

Pokemon Legends: Arceus (Nintendo Switch)
  • This game comes in UK packaging, but it is region-free and compatible with all Nintendo Switch consoles worldwide.

Terastallization shapes battles

Terastallization is a key battle feature: a Pokémon’s Tera Type can change its type and affect your strategy. It gives the Scarlet and Violet battle identity a different emphasis from Legends: Arceus, whose official gameplay materials focus on action order and Agile and Strong Styles (official game overview).

The expansion is optional and tied to the base game

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is a two-part expansion: The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. It adds areas, characters, rivals, and Pokémon to Scarlet or Violet; it is not a replacement for either base game. The Pokémon Company announced bundle packs containing a base game and the expansion for release on November 3, 2023, but that historical announcement does not establish current stock or packaging (official game overview; 2023 bundle announcement).

Nintendo Pokémon Legends: Arceus - Standard - Switch [Digital Code]

Do you need the Scarlet or Violet DLC?

No. The expansion is additional content, not a prerequisite for choosing or playing the base adventure. Consider it if you want the extra locations, characters, rivals, and Pokémon described by the official game overview; otherwise, the base game is the relevant starting point. Check the current edition and contents when buying, since the 2023 bundle notice alone does not confirm what is currently sold.

Can Pokémon HOME transfer Pokémon between these games?

Pokémon HOME supports both Scarlet/Violet and Legends: Arceus, but transfers are limited by whether a species appears in the destination game. Do not assume that every Pokémon can move freely between them (Pokémon HOME overview).

Which one is the better fit for you?

  • Pick Legends: Arceus if observing Pokémon, sneaking up to catch them, filling research entries, and adapting to its action-order battle system sound like the most appealing parts of the experience.
  • Pick Scarlet or Violet if you want to roam a connected region, follow a familiar trainer adventure in an open-world setting, and have the option of a substantial two-part expansion.

These are different takes on a Pokémon RPG, not interchangeable versions of the same loop. Decide whether field research and direct catching or the Paldea trainer journey is the experience you want first.
