For a replay, choose Crystal for those documented additions, or Gold or Silver if you specifically want one of the original paired versions. Access is the practical catch: the 3DS Virtual Console release is no longer available to newly purchase through the closed eShop, so today’s options depend on compatible hardware and a legitimate copy you can access.
What are Gold, Silver, and Crystal?
The Pokémon Company describes Gold and Silver as continuations of the first Pokémon games, set in the new region of Johto. Their original Japanese release date was November 21, 1999. The games brought a new map and story, with Ho-Oh, Lugia, Unown, and the roaming trio Raikou, Entei, and Suicune among the notable rare Pokémon highlighted on the official page.
Crystal is an enhanced edition based on Gold and Silver, rather than a later remake. Its additional presentation features make it a natural choice for many returning players, but the official sources do not establish a complete list of version-exclusive Pokémon or prove that Crystal includes every feature from both paired games.
Should you play Gold, Silver, or Crystal?
Choose Crystal for its documented additions
Nintendo describes Crystal as an enhanced version of Gold and Silver. Nintendo of Europe identifies two notable additions: choosing a male or female protagonist, a first for the series, and animated Pokémon battle sprites. If those changes appeal to you, Crystal is the clearest fit.

Nintendo of Europe also notes a post-game scene in the Virtual Console release that allows an encounter with Celebi. In the original Crystal release, Celebi required special accessory use. That distinction applies to the cited Virtual Console version and should not be mistaken for a general guarantee that every cartridge offers the same access.
Choose Gold or Silver if you want a paired original version
Gold and Silver are the original paired releases. Choose one if you specifically want to experience that version rather than Crystal’s enhanced edition, or if a particular version’s content matters to your collection. The official sources cited here do not provide a complete exclusive-encounter or event comparison, so they are not enough to recommend Gold over Silver—or either one over Crystal—for a specific Pokémon roster.

Consider what you want to do with your Pokémon
Nintendo’s support compatibility list includes the Virtual Console versions of Gold, Silver, and Crystal for Poké Transporter. It also describes Pokémon Bank as able to transfer stored Pokémon—including those moved via Poké Transporter—to listed games and Pokémon HOME. This confirms title compatibility, not that a new user can currently obtain or set up all the required legacy applications. If transfer is your main goal, do not assume that having a compatible game alone settles whether the complete process is available to you.
Can you still buy Pokémon Crystal on 3DS?
No—not as a new purchase through the Nintendo 3DS-family eShop. Nintendo of Europe records Crystal’s Virtual Console distribution start as January 26, 2018, and states that purchases on Nintendo 3DS-family and Wii U eShops ended on March 27, 2023. The 3DS release is therefore a historical digital option, not an open storefront route. An existing copy is a separate matter from buying a new download.

A used Crystal Game Boy Color cartridge is a physical route for players with compatible hardware. Before buying, check the cartridge’s condition, region, authenticity, save-battery status, and compatibility with the console you intend to use. Nintendo identifies the original Crystal as a Game Boy Color game; current listings, stock, and cartridge condition vary and are not established by the official product information.
What hardware plays the original games?
The Pokémon Company lists Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance as supported hardware for Gold and Silver. Crystal’s original release is identified as a Game Boy Color exclusive by Nintendo’s Japanese product page. Confirm the specific game and hardware before purchasing a used cartridge; support for Gold and Silver should not be generalized to Crystal.

Nintendo describes Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver as DS games based on Gold and Silver’s storyline, with added features. They are related Johto alternatives, not the original Game Boy Color games. If you want the original releases, seek Gold, Silver, or Crystal; if you want the later DS versions, look specifically for HeartGold or SoulSilver.
What is not established about the version differences?
The official sources cited here support Crystal’s enhanced-edition status and the particular additions described above, but they do not provide a full Gold-versus-Silver-versus-Crystal comparison of encounters, events, or story changes. They also do not establish whether a new player can currently acquire or set up the legacy Bank and Transporter applications. Treat claims about exhaustive exclusives or guaranteed transfer access with caution unless you have a current, authoritative source for the exact version and setup you plan to use.
