In Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Side Mission 027, Reg gives you 20,000 PokéDollars to buy one fossil for the first restoration—but the choice does not permanently lock you out of the other species. Pick the Pokémon you prefer or the one that better fits your team.
What does each fossil become?
| Fossil | Restored Pokémon | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Jaw Fossil | Tyrunt | 20 |
| Sail Fossil | Amaura | 20 |
Serebii lists both Pokémon as level 20, received at the Pokémon Research Lab, with random natures. Serebii’s Side Mission 027 guide has the mission details.
Can you get both fossils later?
Yes. The mission’s 20,000 PokéDollars cover the initial purchase of either the Jaw Fossil or Sail Fossil at the Stone Emporium. After Reg restores that first fossil, he can restore other fossils too, including Old Amber. You will need to obtain any additional fossils separately; the cited mission guide does not establish their later cost or availability.
How to start Side Mission 027
- Wait until Rogue Mega Evolutions appear in Main Mission 10; this is when Side Mission 027, “Restored from a Fossil,” unlocks, according to Serebii.
- Find Reg at the Pokémon Research Lab and accept the mission. He gives you 20,000 PokéDollars for the first fossil purchase.
- Go to the Stone Emporium and buy either the Jaw Fossil or Sail Fossil.
- Return to Reg with the fossil so he can restore it.
Which should you choose?
There is no supported universal winner between Tyrunt and Amaura for every player or team. Choose based on which Pokémon you want, or which one better suits your own team. The first purchase is a choice about what to revive now—not a permanent decision about which species you can obtain.
#1 Best Overall

- Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
- Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
- Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game
Choose Amaura if you want to pursue the Aurorus mission
A later side mission, “Show the Power of Aurorus,” requires you to battle using only Aurorus. Since Amaura is the Pokémon restored from the Sail Fossil, choosing it gives you that evolutionary line directly. This is a consideration for players pursuing all side content, not a reason to worry that choosing the Jaw Fossil blocks the mission: Reg can restore other fossils after the first one. See Serebii’s Aurorus mission guide.
